80's short box, "S.E.R.E." Box permanently attached to the cab.

Should be red if y'all want to get picky. :D

Looks good! Glad I'm not the only person on the interweb that doesn't know everything about modding a Cummins.

Nope, i'm reading and alot of guys throwin' information my way. That's certainly appreciated.

I'm just not sure if I want the snow ball to start rolling.

I've seen hundreds and hundreds of 5.9 Cummins. I've seen tan, black, and green. I've never seen a red one (that wasn't painted by someone later).

It's looking good Kert. Since you are putting the cummins in for MPG, how do these cummins "mods" alter MPG? I know some things on a diesel like bigger exhaust (behind the turbo) and new spark plugs , can increase performance AND increase fuel mileage. However, I wouldn't think increasing the fuel rate would help mileage? I don't know how that system works so I am just asking. :dunno:

Has anyone ever put a variable vane turbo on a cummins, or does that take away the simplicity you are looking for? Then you could have the small nozzle and the large nozzle whenever you need it.

All these colors and no mention of Orange?

I figured that, so you only like a color if it came that way?

At least at some point in time. I wouldn't mind a red 5.9, there are lots of red Cummins engines.

looks good Kert, also while gathering knowledge be sure to check out fuel shutoff for a runaway VE pump engine! I hear there can be a fine line between great power and a runaway...:D

according to the interwebz some of these mods can increase mileage. But yeah, coming from the gas burner world, some of that doesn't make much sense to me. Ya know, headers can increase mileage but in reality they never do.

To be honest, I'm not that up on everything either. One thing I don't want to end up with is a engine that needs some sort of tuning and messing with all the time.

Right on that
Reliable simple power!

I thought that's what a scrap of plywood was for, to block the air intake and starve the thing into dying. (I've only ever had a 6.2 dizzle, which are not exactly in the same power class :D )

Not much to update. More engine work done. A lot of the little stuff bolted back on. Power steering pump mods are done.

Working on a set of wheels. Possibly the best looking set of wheels I've recentered to date. Pics of those coming soon.

Contemplating gear ratios right now. Got my choice from 3.73's on up to 4.88's. 37" military OZ's, Getrag overdrive trans.

The Cummins in my Peterbilt is red...and it's not like our shop guys painted it. :D

cummins apex red pn 3163075 (ISX)
cummins beige pn 3824515 (N14, big/small cam)
cummins bluke pn 3885911 (cross between black and blue, almost deep dark purple)
cummins bracket black pn 3885903

4.10's if you tow with it, 3.73 if you don't.

Mine is 4.10 with that same trans, same engine, same tires and I'm happy with it.

That's good to hear. Alot of folks recommending a 4.56.

How much does your rig weigh?

The individually labeled wires will mostly be not visible. The labels themselves are inside the loom. Only purpose for them is troubel shooting something. The pin out chart itself will be the go to.

Second pic, the engine/trans will have two seperate harnesses. That's the purpose behind the "A" on that label.

so about those custom valve covers????
