81 k5 build (wheeling pics/vid inside)

Back to work on the k5 with my own garage! No more 1.5 hour commutes just to work on it anymore. I ended up buying a house so everything got put on hold and now I own my own garage with 2.5 acres and house. Now I can work on it when j get off work and anytime I want! Already got a lot done since I brought it home.
Cage and Interior painted, motor cleaned up some, 205 done(32 spline front output installed), rock sliders attached,

I also pulled the carpet out of a 90's extended cab chevy in hopes it will cover the the cab floor or atleast most of it...for 30 bucks at the "you pull it" figured it was worth it since it came with all the insulation. And the truck won't feel so much like a oven in the summer time

Here's how I loaded my k5 on my trailer using the hi lift winch kit. Which worked awesome. Won't go on the trail with out it.

Awesome man! :thumb: This thing's moving right along now. Are you using the stock back seat?

How about some more pics of those rock sliders?

Yea I'm goin to use the stock seat but there won't be to many people riding back there.it'll be more of a cargo area. I still gotta tie the sliders to the frame. You can barely see the brackets here.

Sweet build!

Can you post some pics of the frame bracing you did on the front? I need to box or brace mine in the same spot. Mine is bent to ****! What thickness did you use? Any tips?

Thanks!!!!!

Call diy4x and tell him you just want the front half. And just use a angle grinder to trim to fit. But use cardboard templets it will save you a lot of hassle and headache. Mine was really bent up too.

I can't really tell what I'm looking at in the pics of the sliders, but I like them so far. Be sure to post some pics of the final product and how they're mounted for us. I like the design. I may try to do something similar. :thumb:

Here's one side done but not painted. I'd would of liked them to be a little more angled so there not straight horizontal or verticle to keep them from acting so much like a hinge. If that makes sense? But my frame is so bent up this is the only way to get them as flush as possible.

Thanks. That's exactly how I'd like to do mine when I get around to doing them. This project is coming along nicely!

Yea I can't wait til its finished so I can go wheeling again! This is the longest my k5 has been down since I got my liscense.

Nice fab work. :waytogo:

Do you think the slider bushings would have worked as less of a hinge if they were run up and down, instead of along the frame, if that makes sense? I guess the bolt running vertical instead of horizontal? :dunno:

Yea was kinda worried about it moving fwd and back. But I mite be just over thinking it too. I wanted to make it so the tube connected to the slider/cage doesn't have to bare all the force of the impact if I were to have a hard hit. And so when the cage/frame flex there's hardly room for them to move.but I also could had one verticle and one horizontal too.

I think you're fine with the cage all tied in too.:waytogo: All in all, everything looks pretty damn nice. I bet your excited to get this thing back on the trail. :pimp:

.but I also could had one verticle and one horizontal too.

Huh? I might think about that when I build another set for my friends Blazer..:dunno:

very excited! but i meant one bolt goin horizontal and one going vertical so they would keep each other in check, but we will see how it holds up this way. its goin to get hammerd on pretty hard.

Well no progress on my truck this weekend.....but.... my brother in law came up this weekend with his k5. I found him a smoking deal on some 39.5 swampers with alloy rims for 300 bux! They look almost new. Just have a little bit of dry cracks. So with only a 6 inch lift we had some trimming to do.... we also trimmed up the factory bumper. I like it. we were able to find 14blt with the small drums at the local yard today too. We were able to get it off the donar truck and to the register in 25mins. We had 5mins to spare before closing.Hes only got half ton for now and is slowly saving for a d60 and zero rates. Hes not goin to wheel with them just yet tho. Hes just goin to rjn his 35's since the allignment isn't perfect. Anybody got some tricks for helping preserve tires? Armorall? Air them down ?Heres some pics.

I wish they made a phantom for the 89, they look so sexy. $300 is a great deal on them, I just paid 650 for 38's but one is brand new and the others are not far from it.

To your questions about preserving the tires I would say yes and yes.

The box for the winch isn't goin to be mounted there, I gotta get the clip on to find a place for it. And I think I'm goin to have to mover the axle a little further fwd
