POISED FOR GROWTH: 10 CARS UNDER $10K
By: Stefan Lombard
The great thing about cars is that they just keep getting older. With each passing year, cars once considered contemporary are viewed with that much more nostalgia by the very folks who once considered them contemporary. Do you even realize how long ago the ’90s were? The well for classics runs deep, in other words. The choices are plentiful, and bang for buck is constantly being redefined.

For anyone with a little cash on hand, there is currently no shortage of great machinery on which to plunk it down, no matter your preference. This batch is the latest list of hot, affordable cars as determined by our Hagerty Vehicle Rating. So fire up the Craigslist machine, and see if you can’t find some ideal examples of these babies…

VEHICLE
1973–87 Chevrolet C/K Pickups (GMC too) Hagerty Rating "94"
Average Condition #3 value: $7,700

Since the first generation debuted back in 1960, Chevrolet’s C (two-wheel drive) and K (four-wheel drive) pickup trucks have always been worthy of praise. The “Square body” generation is no exception. Independent front suspension makes them less agricultural than some contemporaries, while an available 454-cid V-8 makes the ’81–87 models brutes. There’s a great following for these things, so you’ll always have folks to turn to with questions. GMC trucks from this same era also fall into the “poised for growth” category, so buy what you like. Expect to pay more for 4WD, but you can still find a truck you’d want to own for well under ten grand.

I have two trains of thought about this....Just the sheer number of these trucks that were built during that time, should keep the price down.....But back then alot of these trucks were used for work ( Unlike now where most are used as cars ) and were beat on pretty hard, making a clean truck hard to find and driving up the price.

I watch prices on things as I've been a car guy for my entire life. In the last 20 years I've seen clean squares and other undervalued cars skyrocket. You used to be able to get a nice K-10 short bed, with decent paint, and interior for 2500 all day long. Now that usually gets you a fixable roller. Or one that's running but needs everything.

I point at 75-80 F-bodies as well, in HS I had a buddy score a 76 Trans Am with a fresh 455 and brand new paint for 4500. Today that's a 45k dollar car as long as it's not hacked.

Last I looked 6 months ago an 85 2 door pickup in good condition was 5k high value with Edmunds.

this is true, which means honestly there's a huge amount of restorable trucks and suv's out there, however, not really very many nice originals and factory parts like rubber and trim are drying up, thus making a market for the LMC etc reproduction parts sources. Im seeing fully restored squarebody C-10's starting at 12k to 15k and then the prices go up from there on 4x4's, high optioned examples, Blazers etc.

Funny the difference. Now a days, I wouldn't touch anything post 1975 if I plan to keep it long and modify it. Smog laws here, 1975 and older have no testing. You can see the price difference on CL all the time. A '75 in the same shape as a '76 will go a couple grand more. Except for the full vert blazers, if someone wants the look of a new truck, they can always swap the fronts, and it would be well worth it in the long run... in CA anyway.

Chances are, even a good running truck will fail emissions soon. It's becoming harder to pass every few years and those that cheat the system by using a car in place of the truck, only hurts everyone else as the numbers are reported back and is used for averaging what emissions should be.

There is no huge amount of restorable square body's or anything older up here any more, they rotted away 20 years ago for the most part..

The few "fixer-upper" trucks you see listed on craigslist often are priced at 1,000+ dollars, even if it is somewhat rotted and at least "will run and drive"...4x4's are more of course, and are often the ones that rotted the most or were molested the worst, that however, does not seem to lower the price much..

Judging by what I see on craigslist,my pickup "should" be worth $2500 bucks or more...personally if I were to buy another one like it,if I couldn't get it for under $1000,I think I'd pass...and go further south and look one one that is solid..

Up here a lot of people like older vehicles,no emission tests, and nostalgia, they can go to cruise nights, and still daily drive them to work..also the fact most of the 88 & up style trucks have severe frame rot issues ,and they are in worse condition than an older square body, makes the older trucks more desirable...

Here's a few listed on CL now, starting with a nice fairly unmolested one,and on down to a lowly "yard truck plow"...note the prices!..

1977 Chevy K10 Short Bed 4x4 Pickup - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle automotive sale

1978 Chevy K10 4x4 short bed sell/trade - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle automotive sale

1985 Chevy C20 Pickup truck - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle automotive sale

Chevy Scottsdale - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle automotive sale...(more my price range, but its been beat )..

And I'm the moron over here beating up my one and only square. It's time for a change in pace.

If this one below has a title--I'd be willing to fix it up and daily drive it--it would be a good summer 2wd truck, save mileage and wear on my 4x4 when I dont need 4wd and to feed a diesel..
--been looking for a straight six & manual tranny truck, few exist around here any more, and if you see one,its is usually a minty "grandpa's" truck priced around 3500 bucks..

*PARTS ONLY* 1984 GMC 1500 Pickup - auto parts - by owner - vehicle automotive sale

I think as time goes on and trucks become further and further removed from the brawny, utilitarian workhorses that they were thanks to emissions laws and changing expectations among the populace, you'll continue to see this old iron go up in price. It's still probably going to be a bit before you start seeing prices skyrocket for the 80's trucks, the exceptions being the best restored/restomod examples in desirable body styles. Prices seem to be going up for nice, unmolested or restomod Blazers too. As some have pointed out, with rust being a factor regional pricing can vary widely.

This is why I refuse to make a squarebody crawler. It's not that I couldn't but I really enjoy being one of like 3 on the road in this area. 90's fords are plentiful hence why I beat on them instead.

I've always hated seeing guys take good 73-87 trucks up here and making them mud trucks or scrapping them for $100 because they refuse to let someone lowball them and only take $500 (which I've seen a lot). The same old excuse "they made millions of these who cares?" But what these people fail to realize in another 20 years that decent truck you cut up for no reason won't be easily replaced.

That's why I refuse to let me 78 die. People down south would say its scrap pile material most likely, but it's another square on the road so it's winning in my book.
