'83 K10 SB "L1TSBFIBBC" build

So Heath back to your headers, how do you seal the individual tubes into the collector? Is it just a slip fit?

Thanks, bought it in '95 when I was a Junior in High School.

Man you are old! In '95 I was only a sophomore in high school. ;)

So Heath back to your headers, how do you seal the individual tubes into the collector? Is it just a slip fit?

Just a slip fit yes, there are two tabs per collector that bolt them together so they can't slide apart. The first time I put them together I did it dry, and although I couldn't hear any exhaust leaks, I could see a little exhaust residue from tiny leaks where the primaries enter the collector. So since I have 02 sensors in there I put a thin layer of high temp ultra copper RTV in the collector tubes before I slid them back over the primaries to seal up any tiny gaps. Seems to have worked, everything stays clean now.

They do make double slip fit collector kits where they have a second layer to help seal it but they usually just recommend them for turbo applications.

Now we know there have been changes as you have a whole thread on the intake. Why not post it in your actual build thread.

You're both right, I do have a few small changes and updates from the intake and dunes trip, and I had texted beags a pic of my new wheels and tires too I just got a few weeks ago. I'm just not quite ready to spend the time to organize it and post it here yet, hopefully in a few weeks.

What a tease...

Well I just re read the entire thread so I feel like that earns us a couple of pictures when you get time.

Alright guys, thanks for the pushing. :)

And I apologize as most of the beginning pictures stopped working when we switched to the new media format at CK5. Someday I should fix that.

So I am adding a few pictures without taking the time to organize stuff and a shorter summary:

Swapped from a dual plane to single plane intake...( like it better with my EZ-EFI) look here for more info...

Went to the dunes again...

And went to a wheel dyno... (397 HP and 430 lb-ft at the wheels)

Got new wheels and tires... (Dick Cepek Extreme Country 37x12.5R17 on M/T Classic III 17x9 wheels). Saved me about 70 lbs of unsprung rotating mass vs my 36x14.5R16.5 Super Swamper TSL radials on similar Pro Comp aluminum wheels. I think nearly all of the weight was the tires. And these tires are lighter 2 ply sidewall (aramid fiber?) (still load D, I couldn't find a C in that size) instead of the 10 ply rated load range E TSLs. So I'm curious how the sidewalls do on the dunes if I get more surface area at the same pressure. Also, with the 17" rim I shouldn't worry as much about the tire literally falling off the bead like the 16.5s do at about 3-4 psi. I almost got beadlocks but didn't want to deal with the maintenance. The new tires are great so far on the road, smoother and quieter. We'll see how they do offroad. They are actually made by Cooper Tire for Deck Cepek (who is owned by M/T).

The old tires have no leaks, no plugs, and plenty of tread. But they are 15 years old and they vibrate at highway speeds (and bad at 117 MPH on the wheel dyno). I'll sell them local hopefully to someone who is a mudder or something, would work great for that.

That looks great! :waytogo:

How’s the frame holding up after you fixed it?
Thanks for posting a pic of your dads Willy’s again!
That thing is just a turn on for me! :pimp:

Thanks, and no problem.

As for the frame, its slowly bending again since it was straightened back in 2010 or whatever year that was. I will have to box it and cage it or something or it will continue to get worse I believe. It's still pretty mild but it's definitely not straight again. The tail end is sagging a tiny bit and the bed is touching the frame again in the middle.

I'm considering chopping some out of the frame and selling the sheetmetal and putting a fiberglass 73 blazer tub on it so I can fit the family in it, go full vert, and shed some weight all at the same time, but I don't have the time or money yet. That would also allow me to cage it and link the rear without cutting up the rust free cab or bed.

That’s a good idea with the tub!

Truck looks great Heath
Nice numbers too!

How do you like the new tires? Any reason you chose them over something else? Tread and traction wise? And do you notice a difference in performance with the weight loss?

Thanks, its actually got me excited about modifying the truck again. But it might be a while as I need more time and money.

Thanks Dave, wasn't quite what I expected but came around with a few tweaks and shockingly with a more normal size tire. Makes you wonder what it would pull with some light 28" racing tires or something. But then again does it really matter? It puts the power down when I need it and the acceleration is there, so I still say you can't race a dyno.

So far I like them a lot. They are smoother and quieter than my TSLs were, doesn't surprise me as the TSL tread design is decades old. I wanted a mud terrain tire but I wanted something with a more flexible sidewall for airing down (I air down the TSL to 8 psi and it barely flexes) and I wanted it to still be a radial but be lighter. I only wanted a USA made tire. I've always had good results with Cooper tires, and they make these for Dick Cepek in the USA. Plus when I compared weights with a lot of the top tires in a 37" radial these were about 10 pounds lighter on average (they are under 70 lbs each), they have a "high tensile lightweight 2 ply sidewall" which I am assuming is an aramid fiber of some sort (like kevlar is). When I read the reviews they seemed very positive, and several people even said they do well in the sand, which is my primary offroad surface these days.

The wheels I looked all over for something slightly different but the other stuff I found I liked I wasn't really sure I liked it. They looked good in the pictures but I was afraid it would be too much on the truck. Plus the wheels I had are about as light as you can get in 8 lug unless you go to a racing drag or pulling wheel, and these new ones are 17s which I have wanted for years in place of the 16.5s. Not sure the drag wheel would take the abuse of speed in the sand.

I haven't even gotten on it yet with the new tires. They are basically brand new about a month ago and I have only taken the truck to go mountain biking once a week and some groceries once. I think ~70 lbs of total unsprung rotating mass is a significant change both for handling and performance and should be noticeable. But until I get on it or race it on the sand I won't really know for sure. My judgement of speed is all screwed up now when I drive the regal, everything else seems slow. So far I would buy the same thing again, tires have came a long way recently, especially since the days of Denman Ground Hogs and the TSL era. I almost got an IROK tire but the only light one was the bias ply and I wanted a radial for the better handling and I don't like flat spots when you drive away every time it sits more than a day or so. So yes there are a lot of reasons I bought that tire. The big question is will it hold up being so much lighter. I think it will because Cooper tires have given me confidence in every set I've had.
