83' M1009 Rebuild to Civilian

GMOTM worthy.

Truck looks great!

Thanks Brian. Now to get some with the soft top up and down. It's already "relaxing" a little since the suns been on it this morning. Very heavy canvas top. The Charcoal gray looks pretty good with the darker GM charcoal gray metallic.

I don't often vote (just never think of it), but I went to cast a vote for this one, because it is quite deserving (even with the silly gears).

Oh no, I think they look fine. Someone was asking about them.

Martin

I didn't think you took objection to them with your question and there's not too much that gets me PO'd at any comment. I took it exactly the way you meant it. Just a question where I got them and what they probably were originally for. I do wish they were just a little bigger but they still look good the size they are.

Thanks guys for all the votes on the GMOTM forum. I hadn't been on the computer for a few days and wow, I was surprised when I browsed around. Thanks again.

Nice weather here except it's a little windy. Decided to fold up the new top and drive to the parties my wife and I had to go to. The top has loosened just slightly but enough that the snaps are easy to get off and not a lot of pressure from the top pulling. Here's some pics with it folded and the nice boot it comes with to store it when folded down.

Funny you say that. The first party was at my sister's house and it was my brother who kept taking people to see it in the neighbor's yard! He loves it as much as me. At the other party it was night time but I still got to show a couple guys it. One guy really liked the other guy said" nice, but I'm a Ford guy". I said" no problem, I'm still willing to tow you!" :D

Had a couple issues with my truck I needed to address. I had never touched the 700R as it came out of a friends truck and he told me it was fine. For the first 2 months or so it was ok, then it started slipping slightly in 4 and going in and out of 3rd. Bought a new trans from Monster Transmissions in FL and put it in this Sat. While I was at it, the 6.2 started to have a small leak from the rear main. So while the trans was off, the new oil pan came off and a new seal went in.

The new trans came with a deep chrome pan, new stock stall 6 bolt diesel converter, 12qts of synthetic, and a new remote cooler. All this and a 3yr warranty for $1,623.00 delivered. The local trans shop wanted at least $1,500 to rebuild mine w/6month warranty. No converter, no fluid, no remote cooler. It was a no-brainer.

Total job to get both done took me 9hrs. My brother and a buddy helped out and my buddy who painted the truck let me use his lift. That was a life saver. Test drove the truck after all was said and done with the TV adjusted and I found it really moved out quickly but shifted late even on a light throttle. After reading threads on the TV cable I took a second look at the adjustment which was done by the book. Turns out the bracket that holds the cable was flexing enough at WOT that it wouldn't pull the casing out even one click. I ended up pulling the cable by hand until the casing came out one click. I then opened to WOT and the bracket didn't flex nor was there any slack in the TV cable. Took it for a test drive and the shifting is now perfect.

Total job ended up being a success. No leaks, new trans cooler, perfect shifting trans, and now the truck really moves out. Turns out the original trans was swallowing motor output. After a closer look I believe I found the issue with the other trans. The torque converter was only a 3 bolt. This trans and converter did come out of a original 87' 6.2 Jimmy but I know he had it rebuilt at one time. It appears they put in the wrong converter as a diesel converter should be a six bolt converter and no greater than 1650 stall. (when I installed the trans in my truck I guess I wasn't paying attention to the converter either:doah: When I dropped the pan on the old 700R there was no debris and the fluid smelled perfect. I believe the converter was to blame for my issues.

At $1600 that's a good deal. Heard good things about their trans too.

Did you have to send them a core?

No core charge. That really surprised me. Monster Trans builds all the trans for the popular cable shows like Shade Tree Mechanic and the like. Monster Trans was running a 10% off special if you spent $1500 so that's why I got the syn trans fluid, deep chrome pan w/drain plug, and the remote cooler. There was an additional charge of $75 (included in the $1,600) for the HD 4WD trans case and shipping was $50 to a home (also included in the total price).

It was delivered by TT with a power tailboard. Felt sorry for the driver because by the time I realized he was out front he was coming up my crushed asphalt driveway with the trans, fluid, and converter on a pallet jack. My driveway is 300' long! Really nice guy though and we got it in my garage.

The only thing I'm questioning is I thought all the HD 4WD trans cases have the large "K" on the side. My original does but the Monster trans does not yet it looked identical and I measured the thicknesses of the casting where I could with my caliper and it was virtually the same so I don't know if they came without the "K" on them also.
