84 Crew Cab Build

Got the firewall all cleaned up today. Just decided to Semi-flat black it. Cleaned up as much of the wiring as I could till the motor is in.

I was able to trade my 8000lb warn winch for this 15000lb warn straight across. I cant believe how big this winch is though. It uses 7/16" cable. Was planning on putting in between the frame behind the front bumper, but I may need to rethink it because of the size.

Also got the 6.0. It happened to be iron headed, but the guy I traded it with is giving me some ported and polished LS1 heads, intake, and coils. Also got the cam, springs and push rods coming. Also have been messing with my HP tuners on my brothers 5.3. Once you get the program its very addicting to play with. Hopefully I can get the motor all cleaned up and put back together next weekend.

Havent got much done on the truck. Did get the header and motor mount flanges water jetted. Also got the tubing for the headers. I am using some bends from Speedway. They are 2" which is overkill, but the sound should be good with that size.

In a twist of fate, I was able to trade my iron head 6.0 for a 2005 drive by wire 6.0 with the trans. The guy I got the original motor from felt bad and had this one show up. Just waiting for it to be delivered now.

Here is a picture of one of the project cars in the shop. Has the big block out of my truck in it with a powerglide and 5.13's. Should be a fun car to drive.

Got the motor mounts mocked up. Was able to push the motor back a couple inches to help with crossmember clearance. I think the BFH will give me enough clearance. Just need to pull them off and tig weld them.

I also got the torque converter for the 4L80e. I called a local company looking for a 3000rpm stall and the guy said that he could do it, but he would have to use a 9.5 inch converter and with the truck weight it would produce a ton of heat. He recommended a converter out of a 1993 4L80e which has a twin stator where all the others use a single stator. I understood it would give a lower effective gear ratio. It wont stall very high, but should multiply the torque at low rpm better. The best thing about it was the price. $190 compared to $550 for a TCI converter or $1000 for a Yank.

thanks, i appreciate it. how easy was it to install that straight axle kit? did you get the torque converter out of a junkyard and how do you plan on mounting your winch?

I didnt install it, but it looked pretty simple. Maybe a couple hours if the stock front end is already out.

The guy that built the torque converter had a couple he had saved.

I planned on mounting the winch in between the frame rails behind the front bumper. The 15k winch would fit if I reworked the crossmember behind the bumper, but I think I am going to sell it and buy a 10k smittybilt winch and a dry 100 shot of nitrous for the 6.0. I doubt I will use the winch more then once a year so no need for the monster size winch.

Got the Trans crossmember mocked up. Just need the 05 trans to make sure its the same length so I can finish the frame brackets.

I bought a 36" long, 2" wide strip of Polyurethane from Mcmastercarr and cut two 9" long pieces for rubber cushion. Its a little softer then the motor mount bushings so It should work pretty good.

nice rig.we dont have too many of those left here in the rust belt.i may have only seen a couple in the last couple years.

Got the 2005 6.0 tore apart and cleaned up and painted. Also took the heads into work and milled them down to get a compression around 10.5:1 compression. Installed the TSP 224 camshaft with .581 lift. Also intalled the head studs. Just waiting on head and intake gaskets to arrive.
Also got a 3 piece engine cover for it. Gives it a different look.
