Ive almost had this truck for two years and have been building on it sense then. Figured I would start a build thread over here to catch up with current progress which will be a cummins swap soon.

Back in October of 2010 I was really wanting to find a crew cab truck I was looking for a SRW 2wd or 4wd crew cab but all I could find in my area was 2wd duallys. So I bought a 1985 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab.

Drive train - 454/th400
A/C, Power Locks, Power Windows, Cruise, tilt column, factory am/fm radio, hydro boost brakes

The truck looked to be in good shape but after I got it home and started tearing it down I figured I needed to find a replacement body for the truck. While I was searching for a new body for the truck I started to convert the frame to 4x4 using spring hangers off of an 86 k20 frame.

2wd stuff removed

I then decided I wanted to try out a 6.2 diesel in this truck, figured it would give me better fuel mileage compared to the big block. So I found a guy that wanted to trade his J-Code 6.2 with a Th400/NP208 for my 454/Th400.

In all of this time I then decided I wanted to go back to a dually on the truck. I had to find some rear spring hangers off of a K30 so that I could get the correct height in the back of the truck.

For the front axle sense I didn't have a D60 and couldn't afford one I just through a D44 under the front.

D44 almost back together

I then decided against running the th400/np208 and picked up a SM465/NP205 for the crew cab.

Frame painted with drive train installed.

During all of this time I ended up finding a guy selling a 84 C20 crew cab without motor or transmission. I traded him my TH400/NP208 and some cash and had another crew cab setting in front of the shop. This was going to donate its body to the 85.

Sense the truck was 2wd and I was using a SM465 transmission the floor was not going to fit, so I welded together a removable transmission hump for my floor.

After fixing some rust it was finally time to start some body work.

I needed new doors and a new bed so I just painted the cab and front clip for now. I then put it back together and got it running.

After that I drove it around some, but decided I wanted to go back to a SRW truck. So I just took the duals off and threw some singles on the back.

The plan then was to do 6 inches of lift and run some 37 inch hummer take offs on some 16.5 inch wagon wheels I had. I started driving the truck a lot at this point.

I then found someone willing to work with me so that I could finally put the motor in the truck that I really wanted. A cummins.

At this point i was driving the truck a lot and all my friends who seem to drive small cars started calling my truck "The Tank" so that is where it has gotten its name from.

Then one day I was driving home from college and I started getting tons of black smoke from under my hood. One of my steel brake lines from the master cylinder produced a crack in it and that sprayed on the exhaust manifold and caught fire. Lucky all that was on fire was the rubber coupler in the steering system so there was no real damage other than needing a new steel line.

That should sum up from the beginning to current. The truck currently has the 6.2/sm465/np205 all pulled from it as I took that and put it in my 80 k10. This truck is waiting for me to get my cummins and get it dropped in there.

So the current plan for the truck is to go back to a dually. After I get the cummins I will be picking up a 91 dodge D60 dually front axle. And I will either regear my D70HD rear axle or find a Dodge dually rear axle for the 3.54 gears. The truck will be getting a NV4500 and some transfer case, I am undecided to go with a 2wd NV4500 and run a divorced 205 or to go with a married setup. The truck will have 4 inches of lift and will at some point run 315/75r16 they will require 2 inch spacers between the rear wheels. The lift and tire combo on these duallys is a really bad ass stance!

Awesome work so far, looks really good. Welcome to CK5!

Thanks man, it has been fun cant wait to get the cummins dropped in it!

Nice,

are you over on 67-72 chevy trucks also?

we like CC's around here

Yes I am, I figured this site is more 4x4 based so I would post my build over here. Seems like that site is more about the lowered 2wd.

I like the crew cabs too! I still got my 85 crew cab cab setting here that I might build a crawler with.

I have some questions about maybe running 52 inch springs in the front of this truck. I have a set of 52 inch springs on my k10 that I am swapping out for 56 inch springs for so I will have a set of 52 inch springs setting around. I already plan on running cross over steering on this truck and I am looking to get 4 inches of lift on it as well. So 52 inch springs are starting to sound like a good idea and I think they will be able to support the weight of the cummins nicely. The truck is mainly going to be a DD/Tow rig I doubt I will be wheeling my truck but it will get the occasional drive into the field to go places I need to get to. Will 52 inch springs be to soft for dd use? I dont really need the flex looking more at the amount of lift and the carrying complicity of the springs. I probably wont be removing many springs from the pack just because I know the more i remove the more it will flex and sag.

I had a full pack on the front of a 98sas I had done. It was a great ride! Drove like a Cadillac. I would really try to get the sway bar hooked up. When I took it off for wheeling it was a whole lot of body roll like riding in the ocean. Build looks great!
I'd really like to know how you did the engine mounts since it was a 2wd?

Yeah we do love crew cabs over here. i just started building mine too. i thought about throwing a cummins in mine before i actually got mine. anyways love to see another crew cab build keep us informed!

Yeah I plan on just running a whole pack in the truck figured it would help stiffen them up and help carry the weight of the cummins. As for the sway bar I would love to have the sway bar on the truck, but with the cross over steering sway bars dont fit. Thanks its been really fun so far, but I have way more money into it then I really wanted haha. As for the motor mounts I used the stock 2wd ones and boxed them so that they would support the weight of the motor. I never did get around to making a cross member for the motor. But it did fine and I didnt think it would tear up anything.

Yeah I see a ton of crew cab builds on the first page of this forum, i love the crew cabs, if I had the money I probably would buy any i could find haha. Yeah I saw your build, I have my 85 cab (The first truck cab) sitting in my grandpas field (Building the truck in my grandpas shop because he has all the big tools and a nice 40x60 shop haha) and it is all rusted which is to far gone to save, but not gone far enough not to build something to play and not care about tearing up. Ill probably throw something together with it when I get around to getting this truck at a stopping point.

Cool build :waytogo: crew with a Cummins, gotta dig it :D

On the 52's, I'm going to say, no way. I'm in the middle of my first experience with 52's (86 K30 454) and they are way soft. Im going to stiffen up the pack because just the big block seems to really flatten them out, and a 12 valve is substantially heavier. My K5 has a set of 6" Skyjackers on it and they really didn't seem to sag much more with the cummins then they did in my other K5 with a SBC, they are soft rides , and didn't ride bad at all.
That being said, I would look at some aftermarkets (Tuff country, Skyjackers) or if the money's there some custom packs ( what I would love to do) like Alcan.

Thanks man! As for the 52s they I was hoping to use them to help keep the costs down cause I'm going to be dropping a ton of more money into this truck. I have been told that rough country springs have held the cummins just fine and don't ride bad at all. They are a little under $300 for a set if I remember right and I'll have to extend my brake lines but that shouldn't be to hard.

Thanks so much for the pics. On the sway bar, you will need one. You will find out soon. Use your skills to dream one up. Think about some extensions or something.

Great build! Subscribed and hope to see some updates!

Thanks man, updates right now will not happen for a while. Still trying to pay off thr motor then I gotta find all the other parts.

Your welcome. Yeah a sway bar would be good. And I hope to try to figure out how to make one work on the truck. I just know most cross over kits tell you to remove the Sway bar because they are in the way. It's something I'll look at when I get there.

Well nothing new with this truck so far. Had a little bit of an accident on my fourwheeler that I bought about two months ago so I have been stuck in bed for the past few weeks and probably a few weeks more.

Yeah, sand would have been way better. The best part is that I was in a State Wildlife Area and you are apparently not suppose to be riding four wheelers in there. I was not riding in the trees just in the road that runs through there and so I got the Game warden called on me and he showed up shortly after I crashed called the ambulance for me and then told me he had to take my four wheeler. So I get to go to court and pay some fines to get my four wheeler back. :doah:

Ahh man that blows. Let that ankle heal up well and dont strain it.

Yes it does, just how I wanted to spend my summer from school :haha:The thing that probably sucks the most is that I cant work (which is ok, I just work a minimum wage job) but sucks that I wont be making the progress on my truck that I was hoping to.

I just noticed you're in Pitt. I went to school there and now I only live a little over an hour away. Do you just do four wheelers or have a full-size rig too?
