No, they are not new. They are used, and they are 906's. I am aware of them being the less desireable head, but I know lots of guys using them that are pleased with them. I am not building a drag car, they will still be head and shoulders above a swirl port head.

John, I should let you throw these on your flow bench, or have you tried a set of 906's already?

Martin

Well, I think that's real reason you don't want them. You're not building a race car, you're building a truck that would see more benefit from low/mid range TQ.

I'm just passing on what I've learned but I have no experience with installed 906s.

The exhaust is whats worse. They will be fine for what he is doing. Marty I flowed a set already. You could port the exhaust or you could just be happy knowing that the swirl port pos heads you have are junk and the vortecs are better even if they aren't "the best". It think most of these guy think that this is rocket surgery but its old beat up trucks. Any head you put on there is better than what you have. here I am going to make a crazy statement Peanut ports work great on bbcs and 906s work great on sbcs. They may not be the BEST but maybe you could save a $ using them. Do you guys drag race this stuff or what. We climb rocks and pull race cars with ours. Besides the biggest gain will be from putting in a cam that matches his rpm range.

I agree. From what I have read the 906s are better then any pre Vortec head which includes angle plugs, fuelies, camel backs and the rest. If you are getting the 906s for half of what the 060s cost and you don't mind missing a little bit of low end TQ then it's a non issue. But if you only need to layout a couple hundered more bones for the 060s then they are WAY worth it.

Why do you guys keep comparing drag racing to rock crawling or towing? The 906s LOSE low end power which is what we are talking about. So why do you keep making my point for me?

If the heads and cam don't match you're wasting more money. 550 inches of lift is useless if they heads wont flow. You could cut the seats and put bigger springs in but with out doing something to the runners it's more wasted money.

I agree with needing torque but I guess after the last few weekends of wheeling I see the fact that even a 305 has plenty of power. He knows the only way to really get tq is too but in a bbc. He got the heads and tbi intake cheap so it will be fine he won't loose that much and with the lt1 cam and a tune it should work good for a sbc.

Oh and most vortecs run out of air at 500 lift even with some work.
