84 K20 "Ethel" Not an Sbc/NV4500/241C

Semi restoration of a 1984 K20 pickup. 5.3 LS, nv4500, np241c.
It sat for so long I am worried about what lurks in the tank? I have been using this one steady and know it's clean, the other I dumped some diesel additive in .. I just don't know and I'm skeeeered! Lol I'll just have to put 10 gallons in and see..

Unless you have some reason to be afraid, I would give it a try. If the fuel is waterlogged, pump it out and replace the fuel. But don't be afraid of something that hasn't done anything bad to you...
 
That's what I'm afraid of.. Algae.. But I got a better filter now than factory every did so..

This. If you're worried, siphon a little bit out through the filler neck and see what you've got in there. Or, since you said it's not very full, flood it with known good fuel and some fuel-cleaning anti-algae additive. The worst it can do is plug that filter. And my bet is that it won't even do that.

But in no case are you authorized to be afraid of it. That just won't do. :deal:
 
Do you older Diesel engine guys run additives in every tank? I have been running additives in every tank since I bought my 02. Howes is what I run now.
It was a while back but if you go into @76zimmer 76 crew cab build on page 81 there was a pretty good discussion about additives. But there isn't anything about running them in a 6.2 or 6.5 IIRC?
I was a howes guy too. Now I'm just a guy that regrets getting rid of his diesels...

I do. I usually run Power Service or Stanedyne additive.

Keep in mind that my truck(s) don't see many miles per year. As such I'd be running some cleaning additives periodically to clean out the crud that seems to accumulate while sitting. But for the IP-based diesels I consider lubrication additives to be longevity insurance. Not sure whether a commonrail engine would benefit significantly from such, but lubrication-related mechanical IP failures are nothing new.

Believe me... I've been trying to figure out a way to convince my wife that we need to trade in her hemi for an older Cummins. A guy came into the shop today with an 06 identical to my 07 and we ended up having a chat for about 20 minutes about them. It made me whimper like a lil puppy. Right now I'm just ready to get my 77 together.

My vote is just fill the tank and go for gold. I wouldn't just use 10 gallons. But I never was accused of being too bright. :whistle:Filling it full will allow what is In there to blend in better.
 
I took the plunge and just filled it to 10 gallons.. We'll see if it acts weird at all. I also use howes and the stanadyne performance formula.
