84 K20 "Ethel" Not an Sbc/NV4500/241C

Semi restoration of a 1984 K20 pickup. 5.3 LS, nv4500, np241c.
This weekend went really well, Ethel has tow pig duty so I serviced the engine and made sure all other fluids looked good. Checked the normal stuff and also installed a brake controller.
The trailer I pull with normally is a friends but I maintain it because I use it a decent amount so greasing wheel bearings and checking brakes etc all had to happen. Towing the empty trailer up the hill gave me a bit of a preview of how my day was to go.
This is a decent grade maybe 5% and kinda long but usually I can maintain 45 till the very top where I shift down a gear then run the rest of the way up it. I created the top of the hill at 30mpg..... empty.. 2200lb trailer.. oh boy!!
Once I picked up the truck I think I am pulling 7-8k total which should be in the range for this truck.

The trip was uneventful but the truck would not pull third on any sort of uphill at all. And on flat ground the speed limit was no problem. The brakes felt right at the limit..
basically just wasn't up to the task of this much weight.
Kind of disappointed but I should have been more prepared for the fact that this is a worn 6.2..

After much deliberation and almost selling her off, I think a big block is what the dr ordered.

As I said earlier...you will still have an issue if you aren't comfortable with the brakes. Going faster is no help whatsoever if you can't safely stop. :dunno:

Also, have you checked for a plugged fuel filter?

The brakes issue I will help resolve with a full float rear axle. The brakes are substantial compared to the semifloat and can be swapped to a disc brake as well. That part was fixable from the beginning.
The truck was not down on power it just doesn't make much to begin with, for a 6.2 it does what it supposed to and didn't overheat or anything bad like that. I just wanted more from the truck and knowing my 72 with a small block I built in the past would tow this up my steepest hill at the speed limit while revving 4K and not sweating makes me realize what the truck can do, that truck weighed almost a thousand pounds less than this does and would pull and stop more confidently than Ethel.. now that has an h072 and was a camper special with smaller tires and lower gear so I under stand the comparison isn't apples to oranges but regardless I have had 3 k20s all varietys now.

78 400/400 10b/14 3.73 33in tire
72 350/350 44/h072 31 inch tire
92 350/700 8.5/14sf 3.73 33 inch tire
If you count my blazer
350/350 44/14 4:10 35 inch tire and 36 tsl late.

And Ethel..
6.2/465 10/14sf 3.73 33 inch tire

The 72 and 78 are tied for best towing.. 400s are just torque monsters..

Do you have another 6.2 rig nearby for benchmarking purposes? Yes, the engines are all gutless by modern standards, but that doesn't mean that yours is actually up to par. It shouldn't struggle to keep up with an equally-geared carburated 350 (although we already established that the SM465 is not a great towing transmission due to the shifting pattern).

I think we were telling y'all 6.2 and towing anything just do not go together...on page one. They're great engines, awesome off road, great fuel mileage, sound cooler than the other side of the pillow. Won't pull a sandwich out of a wet bag. It's kinda like expecting your dog to be a great opera singer. Damn fine dog, can't sing for shit.

Haha!!! ^^^ these words are words that will go on forever in my mind! :haha:

I was expecting a reply from you, Rene, but you exceeded all expectations with this piece.

:haha: :rotfl:

Well Saturday night was interesting..
I was cleaning and greasing the right front locking hub because it tries to self lock at times on the road. So like normal I was squatting up and down a bunch. Well apparently I stood up and was trying to arch my back against the hood to stretch and I passed out, dropped to my knees and fell face first into the asphalt driveway, from that point I don't remember anything. From the looks of the blood I guess I stood up and was groaning pretty loud. My buddy Chris and my wife got me into the house and called 911, got to the hospital and they put me in a MRI and found a concussion. I got 3 stiches.
So now this truck has officially caused blood sweat and tears.

isn't that the stupid game all the kids are playing right now and passing out (some have died). Almost seems like you may have done that unintentionally when you arched your back assuming you held your breathe in the process.

Glad your OK

Hahah no that's my wife's, she was the one taking pics.
If there's no pics it didn't happen!
I have a medication that makes me drowsy, but it hasn't been this intense in a long time and I want dehydrated or intoxicated so it directly points to that. I'll be talking to my dr about it this week.
The really shitty lining here is now I don't feel safe working by myself up at the shop so Lucy has to come home for safety reasons. It's good and bad because I'll have more time but it'll be more of a pain if in need to do something that requires special tools. I'd rather be alive then be dead at a shop with no cell service..

Holy buckets. This is definitely no beano. :(

Any idea what caused you to pass out? Did you bonk your head while stretching? Or is this a case where nobody can ever know what happened?
When I was stretching I went out but according to my buddie I fell to my knees first then sideways onto my head. So it could have been a lot worse.

I had a close call 2 weeks ago. I was building a well house for my house project. The well sits inside a 3' deep pit lined with railroad ties. During one of my hundred trips around it a section of RR tie broke off and I fell down into the pit. Mine wasn't noteworthy because I landed on my feet and my only complaints were a few scrapes and a sore wrist. But stories like yours make me realize how very close I came to taking a tumble and having a very different sort of day. :eek1:

Not sure why I felt like sharing that. I guess I'm feeling somber.

Get well soon, man.
