84 K20 "Ethel" Not an Sbc/NV4500/241C

Semi restoration of a 1984 K20 pickup. 5.3 LS, nv4500, np241c.
I don't wanna rush the install of this, I know the current stuff is good and I'll be not pushing the pedal much anyway maybe 8-16 times per trip..

Ok did some recon, the trans is a GXC from what I found that means it is from a 1993 gas k series pickup. The id tag said 15960761.
Here is the website I found with a list of the tag references.

I was going to attempt to swap it this weekend but found out a few things, it might be wise to open it up and verify all the things are as they should be, it's Easter.. and the fluid is crazy expensive! So ya I burned through a bunch of funds this week and will have to wait to transplant it until at least payday.

Well after reading I have found out I either need the AA bellhousing or I am drilling the face of the nv4500 with the Saginaw bolt pattern.. anyone know how deep is too deep to drill?

You'll be drilling through the flange edges, not the case itself. So you can drill all the way through.

See my CUCV thread for pictures of this. They touch the case wall but do not penetrate.

These also need super secret squirrel gear lube

It's listed in my build thread somewhere

No secret... Gm PN 12346190. List price $32.52 per bottle. Trans holds 4 quarts of the magic sauce.

The stuff is sold also as Castrol Syntorq LT transmission fluid.

Not sure. All I've heard is the nv4500 pretty picky about the sauce it runs. Some of the other 4500 users may be able to chime in on the amsoil use.

Personally I don't buy into the amsoil hype. Got into a pretty heated debate with a customer telling me amsoil said he could run 20,000 miles on an an oil change. He could not seem to understand why is oil pressure was running low at idle and turning on the idiot light. Hmm, might be the 20,000 miles worth of garbage in his oil filter that might have a 1/2 quart capacity at best. So it was bypassing and clogged up the little screen below the oil pressure sensor. This was on a 5.3 with cylinder deactivation. He came back later to advise that amsoil published a new bulletin stating the oil is good for 20k, but to change the filter every 10k. Hmm I wonder why they said that.... I have no doubt the oil is good stuff, but the bs they spew to sell it just makes me skeptical.

I'm not brand loyal, I use whatever will work and change it at normal intervals. I don't buy the cheapest stuff and usually will keep running oils if I can get it.. I'll see if I can get the GM or Chrysler stuff still local.

I ended up only having one local option compatible with GM 12346190, and it was a Valvoline product. It wasn't crazy expensive, either. Again, see my thread if you want the part number.
I'll check it out.
As you all know I have been trying to come up with more space where there is no space. My garage is 19 feet deep.
Well today I figured it out. Stackable!! I realized that I had two of each size cabinet and it worked out that I am tall enough to get what I need in there while stacked up.
Another thing I did was remove anything from the cabinets that were not some kind of tool, I placed the stuff in the side room on the racks I had left over. I successfully parked Ethel indoors!
On main reason for this is I want to work on the trans swap but not out in the open and sun, my garage is insulated so it stays cool for quite a while in the morning. I also will be fabricating some front ends and wanted to keep my customers rigs inside.

Magically found a hole to put the compressor in!

Momma observing and trying to claim the spot for the burb! No way Ethel said no way!

Press, workbench and a slew of other stuff that gets moved in and out..

I could squeeze between that! Lol!

I knew about this one for a year before I pulled the trigger but ya good luck finding s good one.. I swear it's like the Dana 60s they're gold..

The stacking cabinet idea is where I'm going at the new place
Stuff that doesn't get used much needs to be up and away. But I think it has 12' ceiling in that garage

My typical response to them is this "yes, Amsoil is good for 20,000 miles, but your filter is good for maybe 5k. Lots less if you use it for anything but commuting"... of course, I get into trouble with the Fram oil filter debate - I don't think the filter makes much difference if you regularly change it. And for the record, 5k oil changes for synthetic and 3k for mineral based is my normal.

400$ I would jump on it. 800$ would be fine too even. Cheapest I see is 1200$

I just need to figure out which one I'm supposed to use. The Ford 60 has everything all discombobulated. I guess I could use whichever one came out of the trucks as my shaft is on the same side as them anyways.
