\'84 K5 Fuel Pump ..... In Tank (electric) or in Block (mechanical)?

My K5 is an '84 and it has an electric fuel pump. I just dropped the Gas Tank and there is a fuel pump in there.

I then called around looking to see how much a high flow pump would be, and I'm told that it should have a mechanical pump, not electric.

Does this mean that the previous owner swapped tanks? My Engine is a replacement 350, so maybe they swapped tanks to go with the new engine?

The only trucks I have ever seen with the fuel pump in the tank are fuel injected ones and diesels(fuel injected, also).I dont think k5s were injected until 87. Are you sure there is a pump in there and not just the fuel level gauge? The sending unit on mine is grounded and has an orange wire for the fuel gauge. Either way i dont think you would need a high volume pump unless you had a lot of engine work.

Yeah, previous owner probably put it in with that new 350 cause on my 84 I have a mechanical pump.

Well, I replaced an in-the-tank fuel pump on my previos vehicle (88 Fullsize Jimmy 4x4). When I dropped the tank in this K5, it looked just like the Jimmy did .......... except there are only 2 wires going to it, like Hellraisers's.

I guess it has the mechanical and the wires must be for the sending unit ..... DOH! my fault

Glad i could i help. You never know until you ask. By the way, hows your shackle flip going? Did you get the rivets out yet. I did mine 2 weeks ago. It was the best mod I ever did to my blazer. I used a grinder and i had to elongate the two holes on the very bottom with a drill. That might just be because of my frame being tweaked. Did your kit come with enough washers for both the bolt and nut sides? The instructions said it should. Mine didn't so i put the washer on the inside. I figured i could always add more washers on the nut side (outside) later rather than dropping the tank again.

It's coming along pretty good. No big stumblers so far.
I Haven't removed the rivits yet and I'll probably end up doing it on Thursday.

I'm gonna try and document this whole thing so others can benifit. What do ya think so far?
