84 SWB on 42's - Sorry it's not a k5 build

I did a little work on the front fenders as well. My goal is to keep the inner fender well and make the fender look like factory. Remember, 42's with a max of 8" of lift. Yeah, we'll see. LOL

I could really use the knowledge of this board to help me find the right alternator for this engine. The engine came out of an 89 1 ton with a 454. I have several alternators that fit GM but they don't fit this darn thing. The parts houses list several models. I can't get it at the local wrecking yard. It's a one wire alternator, but the pulley needs to stick out a bit more than normal GM models. Can anyone give me a part number or help with this?

IIRC the 89 454s were a hybrid serpentine belt/v belt setup. And they are harder to find alternators for because of the fact GM had several different style belt systems at the time. I would take the old one off, and take it up to the parts house, and buy the biggest amp one you can find that uses the same mounts.

The 89 one I have here looks like its the same basic mounting points and on the same side as my 91ish one with full serpentine belt.

Can I get a close up pic of bracketry. front front and side (driver) I sell tons of the serp setups for these and have a lot of experience with them. Its a possibility that the alternators you've been getting are correct and the bracket may have an issue.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I should have said that I don't have an alternator. Some jackass stole it off of the truck before I bought it. I feel that the brackets are correct coz the truck was pretty stock. I will get pics of the brackets.

I just moved and all of my stuff is literally piled in the shop. I need to do some organizing before I can get back to work on my projects. I do remember that the GM alternators I had hit in a couple of spots. The fan would hit on the lower bracket and the alternator body would hit on the portion of the bracket that is toward the passenger side. The pulley (6 rib) doesn't extend far enough either. I'm kinda doing this off memory.

hmmmm interesting.. Looks as though you have the alt support and everything. Everything looks to be very well aligned too. I've got a couple alts from this style. I'll see if there's any sort of spacer behind the pulley

I finally found an old alternator in the shop for a visual. If you look at where the long bolt should go through you will notice that the alt. is not lined up and the body of the alt. is hitting the bracket. It's kinda hard to see.

I recently aquired a Suburban fuel tank with TBI pump and the sending unit. I don't have any mounting hardware at this time. I'll figure that out. I'm still working on how to do the filler neck. I thought about cutting out a filler neck and it's sheet metal and grafting it into the rear of my truck to make the connection a bit easier. Anyone have suggestions?

Looks like your fan shroud is flat up against the radiator core. Mounting it that ways is effectively reducing the size of the radiator quite a bit.

The areas that are solid and flat to the core won't flow much if any air through at all which leaves you with the holes that the fans occupy.

Whether or not it causes an issue.... You'll know sooner or later. Just a heads up.

EDIT: by the way, love SWB trucks. Had one some time ago. Sold it and regretted it ever since. Got another one at the shop that'll i'll start building sooner or later.

Been working on my other project lately. Its a car. Hmmmm. Anyway, the shroud is close but not against the fins. Its flush with the tanks and the tanks are wider than the core. I do understand your point though. If it doesn't cool well, I'll change the shroud first. It's just a sheet of aluminum and I'm not attached to it.

As for the alternator fitment issues, I grabbed an alternator off of my corvette and the SOB fits. Guess that problem isn't a problem anymore, but the C word always costs more. Same part, more money. hahaha
I'll get some fuel, a new battery and see if this thing runs in the next couple days. I'm waiting for parts for a 383 that I'm building anyway.
