'85 C30 now a K20 - Grandpa's Truck

Thanks guys it feels great to have it in one piece.

Dang it Zim you got me, i was hoping nobody would notice that. i had to turn the truck around to put the box on, and for some reason i couldn't find them all, but i have them all now. i'm going to go zip the others on and put the caps on before i do forget :doah:

Need your guys' opinion on a grille. Getting a stock replacement, its the factory silver, should i keep it silver or should i paint it black with the emblem painted the same color as the truck or what? Open to any options really. thanks

silver. Or ya know "stock" color. Not a bad idea either on color matching the emblem to that red.

My first thought is keep it silver.

Ya, me too. Going to have to paint the head light bezels back silver, no big deal. I believe its called argent silver right?

Quote "Want to paint my 82?:deal:"

Nope!! ha. I enjoy wrenching but this body work sh*t was killing me! That's my dads forte.

Thanks guys again for the compliments, i can't say it enough. People have told me if my Grandpa seen this truck he would think we got rid of his and bought a new one right from GM!

Hey Mills, check out the QuickSilver (code 17 I think for '85) for the Grille, and a Bronze or Gold for the Bowtie....

I'll look into that quick silver, thanks. As for the emblem i don't think gold would look that great on a GMC emblem :wink1:. I know the hub caps have a bowtie, but they were to good of a deal to pass up.... Honestly i don't know if i'm going to put an emblem on the grille. The repop one i got doesn't have a spot for it and it looks kinda cool without one. Then i don't have to explain to people why i have gmc on the grille and chevy on the hub caps

OK, I forgot it was a Great Mountain Climber.

Ended up leaving the bezels black. I think it looks alright. Might play with the silver when i have more free time.

Got her all washed and ready for homecoming tomorrow.

Hey Mills. that looks REALLY, REALLY good man...Can you get a shot of it with the sun behind you? That would really make that color Pop in the pic.

just an FYI tip for posting pics...give a line or two worth of space between pic posts so it will post them vertically on screen, instead of horizontally.

Thanks 79 rustyk10.

Zim, I have some pics with the sun behind me but the camera was on the wrong setting and made it look like a copper orange, which i have never seen in this paint. so i didn't post them. i'll try to get some tomorrow. Got a pretty busy day tomorrow, got to wash her down again and run erands to get ready for homecoming, gonna be looong day.

It looks awsome when the sun hits it, it "pops" and brightness really comes out.

Thanks for the tip on posting pictures.

So what exact color is that? I heard you mention "carmine red" i think but is that it? Could i go to some paint store and tell them carmine red and get what you got?

Picking a color was a lot harder then i thought it was going to be. At first i was going to go with carmine red (what my uncles old race cars were), then i said a red metallic (but i couldn't find one i like), so then i said screw it i'm just going to leave it the original red (1985 truck paint code of 72).

When i went to buy the paint, the guy i had been dealing with was able to find the 1985 GM color chip book, which i had never looked at before. He pulled the page that the original red was on so i could make sure it the right color before he mixed it. As i'm scanning the page i noticed one labeled red met. and what do you know its exactly what i was looking for before. I took the chip outside in the sun and was amazed at the metallic. There wasn't much price difference so i decided to change the color to the red met. 1985 GM truck paint code of 75 ( i'm 95% sure its 75). I was kind of glad i was able to stick with a factory color too.

In the chip book its called red met., but i call it dark cherry metallic and the guy that mixed it called it like a brandy wine. We had it mixed in Dupont Nason and i paid $ 196 a gallon (with a student discount). We used almost 6 qts. of paint and almost 2 gal. of clear. and we still have the tailgate to paint, got something special in store for that though. I'll try to get a pic of the mixing label on the side of the can, that way you guys can see whats exactly in the paint. Thanks again for the compliments guys.
