85 gmc jimmy "she's got balls"

But I couldn't tell a 700r4 from a th400 if my life depended on it.

Look at the pan shape.

Yanking the engine and transmission is probably the course of action I will take. I might keep the hub caps as a souvenir. Or make some bongo drums. Dog dish...who knows. The engine might just get put in a 80's camaro. I already picked up a winter beater (98 caviler) so I can do repairs on my cougar and take preasure off getting the truck going so I can do it right and make sure it's reliable before it's a nesesity. I don't take offence easily, so if i have a dipsh*t idea or am just wrong don't worry about calling me out on it. I am rather stubborn however so sometimes I just have to see for myself.

Are you interested/able to sell off parts via cragislist? There aren't a whole lot of valuable parts on there, but you should be able to get $50 for the wheels if it's worth your time to pull them. :dunno:

Well, my trip to Alpena was amazing, it was kinda cool and drizzly but my party and myself made the best of it. We even took a trip to the up, stopped in st. Ignace for wet borrito and took a carriage ride around mackinaw island.
As for the camper, i took pics, verified it is a 350. I couldn't get to the tranny to take a good look at the pan, so it is still in the air, it's either a th400 or th2004...and I'll post pics below of the rear differential. However it's relevance has past as I have decided to sell the whole thing for a 500 bucks to a friend while wants to renovate it. My plan is to invest that money in either parts or a welder( a mig welder as I only have a old Lincoln 225 buzz box stick welder currently). I also have started a new job building welding assembly lines for the big 3 that is a substantial upgrade from die setting. So this project just got some major funding. I have to go back and reassess the situation. I might go full body off restoration and go a bit crazy with it. I also have a nissian 240sx project ( drifter...engine swap) next year but the truck is going to take priority over that. The cougar and caviler that are my dailys are getting traded in for a newer car as I have a much longer commute as well. Looking forward to having some fun in my k5!

Man I'm glad away from the rust belt nation. I remember working on cars when I lived in Detroit. Was nothing but a rust shower. Good looking truck.
Your shop u work at is it a plastic injection shop? I worked at an aluminum injection factory when I first moved to Kentucky. Looked very similar but your machines seem smaller than what they had.

The shop I was at was plastic injection plant. There was 40 presses of different makes and sizes. We made everthing from little levers to bumpers and door panels. The largest mold is set was 60,256lb The place I am at now makes the assembly line that welds together truck frames. We run all the wires and pipes, make sure it works and take it apart and ship.
It's rough in the rust belt to have a rust free car. But I'm looking at getting a new vehicle that hasn't had the chance to rot away yet. If you can stay on top of rust you can maintain a nice vehicle for a while. Then again I'm used to it. I might try to find a southern body for berty. But she will keep her power plant till there is cause to replace it. Ls swap in the future perhaps. 454 maybe. Def going to need a suspension lift and some 35's or so.

Congratulations on the job! Mackinac is a pretty place. :thumb:

Given your extra funding and your newly enhanced desire to beat the rust, have you considered switching to a less rusty truck as a starting place for your build? It would be a a shame if you got through your LS swap and suspension lift and then decided to start over because you were tired of how rusty this truck is. :dunno:

I would sell that whole thing and start over. There are several k5's in the detroit area for 2k that are 100 times less rusty than that rig. Save yourself alot of time and energy.

I have, infact, thought about about getting a k5 thats in better condition. I still need to get this one on the road, even if just to sell it. I bought it for 750, i dont have anything but time into it. Might be a good idea to keep around for spare parts...at the moment I can sit on it, it's not hurting anything. And I am working so much I don't have time to do any wrenching or wheeling.

Understand.. We Michigan ck5 guys are running bundy hill in Jerome mi nov 1st if you are interested.

OK fellas, I've done some work on Berty. I got the steering column swapped out. But (isn't there always a but) when I tried starting it it melted the casing off the ground from the baterry to the frame, diagnosis was a bad battery and a 50 amp charger. So this weekend I am picking up a battery ( recommendations are appreciated) I'd like a nice battery, bot over the top but a good deep cycle crossed my mind. Also the "new" steering column did not have cruise control so I am guessing that is the extra bundle of wire that was left over. Also the rods that go down the column didn't seem to move freely through the bracket that holds it to the dash. I got the shift rod all hooked up and all seems to be well there. But without a battery I wasn't able to see if it would turn over or not. If it doesn't work I'll probably just rig a start button kills switch combo, so if any one know how one might do that, thanks in advance.
My trade is slowing down till the first of the year so I'm going to have some time to work on her. It's going to be cold but I have braved one snow storm in my cougar and that was enough for me. Has new tires and is reliable but I don't want to throw away all the work I've done on my car using it when I should be driving my truck. Once I get it started ( still has a carb issue I believe) needs tires and and alignment and she will be ready for plates and insurance( hopefully).

Why did you swap columns?

Martin

A previous owner lost the keys and used a screw driver to start it. The keys were later found but when turning the steering wheel the gears would shift as the wheel was turned if the column ( shifter sleeve ) wasn't held in place. I don't know what the donor vehicle was, it came with the truck. It has a small diameter aftermarket sterling wheel I don't like already.
