85 K20, the little old ladys truck.

Been trying to determine what axle gears this truck has. Luckily this is the first squarebody I've ever had that still had its RPO sheet in the glove box.

GQ1 REAR AXLE-STANDARD
G80 LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL

Everything I've rear has said GQ1 would be a standard open diff with whatever gear would have been standard in whatever particular truck, but mine has a G80.

Jack the rear end up and spin the tire one revolution and count how many times the driveshaft spins. Or pop the cover off and count the number of teeth on the ring gear.

Post the SPID and I will tell you what it came with.

GQ1 has nothing to do with G80.

You could not get a TH350 in an '85 K20.

You have a TH400, so if that is stock, you have a C6P. A non C6P K20 would have had a TH700R4, and an LS9 350, as opposed to the LT9 350.

If your truck left the factory with a 350/TH400, then it had 4.10:1 gears.

Yep, 10th digit of VIN is F for 1985

Model # is CK20903, so a long bed, fleetside K20.

C6P - 8,600 GVW (heavy 3/4 ton)

LT9 - high torque 350

MX1 - automatic transmission, non overdrive

So your GQ1 is 4.10.

GQ1 just means no optional gear ratio was selected. It does not stand for a specific ratio, like GT4 (3.73) or GT5 (4.10). An '85 C6P K20 with a 350/TH400 had no optional ratios.

In the ad she said it had a TH350, but when I crawled under and looked, I saw a TH400, I assume she just repeated what she had been told and that the TH400 is original.

It is. You could not get a TH350 in an '85 K20. As you have a C6P, with MX1, it came factory with a TH400.

Sweet! I really appreciate that.

But I have another question, why would 8600# GVW truck have a semi float axle?

After much kerfuffle, initial timing is set, and it's running good.

And puking coolant out the back. Great.

O'Reillys said they'd warranty the gaskets, but I need to pull it apart again.

Also ended up with another set of lugnuts that won't work with these wheels, beginning to wonder if they still sell them, 9/16x18, 30* cone seat, and a 1" shank to sit down inside the wheel.

Also, forgot I had this 2.5 inch Rough Country lift, I bought it for my Blazer, but the front springs were too narrow. Blazer has 3" wide springs while these are only 2.5"

I'd assume the K20 would be 3" as well, but I'm not sure, the Blazer has 3 leaves, and the K20 only has 2.

all the after market lift springs are 2.5". Be sure to use bushings that have 1/4" wide larger diameter outer edge to center spring in hanger.

Yeah tat 55 looked like it hadn't run in awhile, if it was stuck on there good could have been mistreated one never knows how good the castings are.
