85 K5 Build Thread Lots of custom work!

Nice build so far. Question for you though. Whats are you planning on doing with the Thornturds and the moonvisor? Thanks in advance.

Scott

yeah looks great except for that windshield visor:dunno:. Ditch the visor. But it's looking great and good luck with all the work

The photos do make it look as though it sticks out a mile. It's not quite that bad and doesn't help being on a low slung stocker mock up rig. The big bumpers never look right on the mockups. Hate posting photos like that but oh well. You'll all see it in the right place eventually.

thornturds are being replaced with the tiress and wheels in the 2nd post of this thread and the moonvisor is going bye bye

Ill probably just craigslist the thornturds locally for cheap jus so i dont have to dispose of them myself

Thank you for ditching the moonvisor. As far as the Thornturds go, I say keep them as just in case tires. I know they're Thornturds, but you never know what they could be useful for. Just a suggestion.

AHhhhHHh so nice my buddies evo finally finished and his garage is now mine .... what a good friend to have that happens to have a full hydraulic lift!!!

My vactaion starts tomorrow i have the garage and a week to really get cracking on this project!

Rust!! Oh my god its unvbelieveable how long it is taking to derust this pig and i got the tank off the other day and the whole ass end is rusty there is too many places i cant get to i give up its time to haul this thing to the sandblaster!

I spent all day with naval jelly, 2inch grinder , 4" angle grinder ... i didnt even get the inner frame section preped good enough for paint so hopefully a blaster has an opening tomorrow or the next day so i can actually get this show on the road.

Once the frame and cab are painted up i can do the shackle flip, install the new bds rear springs, the inboard shock kit, ford shock towers and slap the bilstein 5150's on and i will actually feel like ive acomplished something.

rust like this that i can actually get to isnt so bad to fix up and doesnt take too long

rus1.jpg

there good as new! except for a few sheetmetal rust holes ill need to patch

rus3.jpg

heres a problem just for example i cant reach that rust up there .. i spent about an hour and a half with naval jelly on that spot and the pits nearby it ... the rust just laughed at me .. so i bought a cup style wire wheel and took the guard off the grinder and attacked the spot but the main prob is the pits are still holding rust .. its spots like these and all the other countless places that i cant get a grinder in that made me throw in the towell!

angle grinders are the ****, but they can't reach everything...

I always buy 5" wheels for my 4 1/2" grinder, they can usually reach further.

Sand or soda blaster can get them :D

Well this build got all screwed up by 3 little words .....

MIGHT AS WELL!

I actually had the frame sodablasted already it does nothing for anything but the lightest of surface rust.

I orginally planed on just painting the frame and undercarrige with the body on the frame .. i had to sodablast it like this because both blast shops i talked to said i would regret sand blasting it like that as the motor and trans .. ect ect would find ways for the sand to get in and destroy em...

Fast foward to now ... might as well take out the motor so i can clean up the firewall for paint .... well now that the motor is out might as well upgrade the motor ... so i got a 400 sbc with tpi .... well since the motor is out might as well take out the tranny tcase and driveshafts so i can paint easier ..... since those are out might as well drop the gas tank also ...... after ages of grinding and making little progres might as well take it to the sand blaster now that everything is stripped down (wave bye bye to the useless sodablasting i paid 550 for ) ...

you get the idea

here is where it sits right now

completly striped and ready to blast ..body is sittin on hand tightned bolts so the body can come off while down there ...

they are going to plastic blast the body panels and sand blast the frame ..when it gets back it will be time for paint !
