Ok this about sums up what ill be doing ....

Now what ive got so far and what ive done so far

First thig i did was survey the rust .. it wasnt too bad but still tons of work to do i started stripping the interior which had herculiner done to it but i could see rust coming through it so that plus the fact that laying sound deadning on top of that meant it had to go ... i started with the ole wire wheel and 3 hours later the tail gate wasnt even done this stuff doesnt like to come off ... i tried laquer thinner .. no dice .. i tried a heat gun ... slightly better but still worthless ... i finally found something that worked AIRCRAFT STRIPPER!!!

Ill tell you this you cant layit on thick enough the more the better so 3 gallons later here is where im at
strip1.jpg
strip.jpg

The entire interior was covered in herculiner and bondo this took a lot of work to do and im on my 5th wire wheel!

I found 4 rust spots that need sheet metal patches nothing to serious ..

Next the body the inner wheel wells were a rusty mess and the front fenders were cut terribly and banged up so i ditched em and got new inner and outter fenders but first i shot some panels to decide which color i wanted to use

005.jpg
006.jpg

003.jpg

I went with the color on the front fender.. the paint is ppg single stage polyurethane .. the frame and body will be shot with epoxy primer then the body with the gunmetal grey and the frame with a gloss black
After i decided on the color i striped the body apart, ditched the cheesy flares and filled in the screw
holes with the mig
r1.jpg
fend.jpg

As the interior is almost done ill be doing the sheetmetal repairs and filling in the random screw holes through out the tub... its amazing how many there are prob 50 at least wtf!!!

I started thinking bout fuel injection i had a recipt for the motor i knew it was a crate motor and was put in feb o8 and had about 3k miles on so my plan was to get a tpi setup for it ... The more i researched the more i understood how much this was gonna cost .. there was maf or map there was new system or ebay then there was the issue of if it had the ecm or didnt and if it had the wiring harnesses ect ect... it was a ton of stuff not simple like i thought ... so i considered a tbi setup .. but i wanted good power then i considered a 454 swap .. much looking around to no avail .. i put the motor on the backburner till i found this motor for sale browsing here on ck5 :p

tpi1.jpg

MMMM pretty :p this is a 400 sbc with map sensor tpi ecm and all wiring harneses pulled from Hoppers K5 he was parting out (Thanks man) This was perfect for me because i got alot of other stuff i needed with it Ac comperssor, condensor and evap canister.. Aluminum radiator tranny and oil cooler

So with the engine problem solved may as well pull the old motor out !
(which is what i spent my saturday doin)
m5.jpg
m6.jpg

Bye Bye old almost new 350 sbc :p Thats my buddy fish in the pic im doin all the work at his place its nice to have buddies who have 900 sf garages filled with every tool imagineable and a hydraulic lift :p

so thats pretty much where im at right now the nice thing is now that the drive train is out i can now finish the prep for paint and since im doing this with he body on this is really the right way to do it anyway.. I have had the frame sodablasted but there is still loads of grinding to do since sodablasting does nothing for rust and this rig is from ohio.. The axles themselves claimed 2 wire wheels just to get all the rust off of em !

Ok just wanted to show some of the stuff goin on the rig eventually

For the wheels and tires i went with diamo 18x10 aluminum wheels with 38x15 x 18 toyo mt's
As i will be daily driving this rig i liked this tire for both its on road and off road user reviews

tire3.jpg
tire1.jpg

The 2nd pic is of my tire leaning up against my buddies titan with 6" lift and 33's hahah makes his truck look puny !

I debated alot on the seats and have been ebaying for about 2 months now getting outbid on the tahoe seats i wanted but i decided on these seats for 04-06 pontiac gto they are power on both driver and pass and are heated plus in 2 months ive seen tons of light grey and tan tahoe seats but only 1 set of dark charcoal which got bid to stupidity

Ill have to fab up some kind of adapter in which to mount them.

Next i looked for months for a bumper i really liked but came up with nothing i liked for the k5 but found some really beefy bumpers for f-250's and chevy hd's ect .. Since i had already ordered a bunch of stuff from kert over at diy4x and had a few conversations with him i asked if he could fab up a bumper for me and Thankfully he argeed

Here is an in progress pic of the bumper which will house a warn 12k winch and will have a bar added to the top to mount the xmitter bar to

bumper.jpg

I love the look of this thing and cant wait to see the finished product kert is also coming up with a design for a matching rear yet to be decided on..

Ill be also building a custom grille i mocked up a rough idea of what it will look like im going to run the grille over the entire front end covering everything .. the center of the grille will be a perforated aluminum sheet and the bottom lights will be converted to hid's while the tops will be swaped out to 6" xmitter bars

grille0001.jpg

So here is a frontclip like my blazer

grille00001.jpg

This is the design im shooting for a big ass grille that basically covers the entire front end the grille material will be a perforated aluminum kinda like the grilles on gmc yukon denalis but with a smaller hole pattern

Ill be taking a week off from work soon to really put this project of mine in motion .. Ive learned alot from this site and always wanted to build a Bad Ass K5 so im really going full boat on this build sparing no expense along the way which is of course way more than i ever planed on lol you know how it goes !! ill be updating as progress continues and if anyone has any fiberglassing tips let me know im gonna try and tackle a custom center console to house my dvd head unit and ipod and the door panels to include a speaker pod to mount my focals and power door lock and window switches!

awesome

how much was the truck? pretty ridickulously built already

i paid 4 grand for it pretty much because i knew there was at the very least 4 grand worth of driveshafts axles and brakes i was gonna have to do anyway

Looking good! Um .... Whatcha gonna do with the flares?

I tossed them they were beat up and cracked and cut terribly .. Im still undecided if im gonna run flares or not on the finished product id kinda like to run a less extreme kinca flare that wont find a way to get ripped off the body as flares like to do

Okay cool. BTW that bumper is amazing and is exactly what I have been looking for. Please keep up updated on the progress of it. Maybe once Kert is through with it he can put them in production. Any idea yet on what the cost is going to be on it once finished?

Ya i cant wait to get it on and painted up i still have to send him the mounting bracket diagram so he can finish up the light bar .. I have no idea if hell put it in production as i had it custom built but he can pretty much fab up anything anyone wants skys the limit .. Im into this bumper for 750 + the ride

Update on progress im still playing with my favorite chemical aircraft stripper!!! I sat in a puddle of it while under the chassis and it mad me do a sort of irish jig :wink1: ... this stuff is no joke burns like hell !

Gettin real close to frame and interior paint.. been grinding and prepping still and i should get the garage tomorrow and I decided ive gone this far may as well pop the body off the frame!

cab16.jpg

Startin work up front on the firewall removed the evap blower shroud and discovered the po yanked the evap core  bah so i ordered a replacement shroud with the evap core .. cant live with out ac ! Theres my favorite chemical there ... aircraft stripper !

cab15.jpg
cab8.jpg

So on the inside of the frame theres alot of brakelines and brackets and various other stuff that makes ginding impossible so what i did was slather it up with loads of aircraft stripper and then i blasted it with a 2600psi pressure washer .. thi method worked great other than taking a shower in a caustic chemical that is
cab5.jpg

theres a shot of the inside after blasting... i could literally watch the metal rust when the metal started drying so i sprayed everything down with a diluted solution of about 1 part naval jelly and 4 parts water this took care of the flash rust and kinda protects the metal in the meantime.

cab6.jpg
cab2.jpg

Next i yanked off the hood and vent covers and slathered the cab under the windshield in aircraft stripper

cab7.jpg

And heres where i left off tonight the grayish color your seeing is after the misting of the naval jelly solution dries .. i start my week vaction tuesday and hope to be painting by thur or fri and then i will be fabbing a completly new fiberglass dash and center console!

Holy Sh*t batman, is it just an illusion or does that front bumper stick out aways?

Holy Sh*t batman, is it just an illusion or does that front bumper stick out aways?

a little of both the angle of the pic makes it look like that .. but yes it will stickout a fair amount more than most bumpers probably .. aproach angle wasnt a concern.

Is that your rig or is that a mock-up truck at Kerts shop? Could you get a side pic of the bumper installed?
