'86 chevy on rocks-2-14 Dovetailed bed!!

lookin good. I wish my rear flexed like that. Break anything?

Something broke in the front diff so most of the time the right front was not turning and then every once i a while the left front would quit pulling. Saturday night I had a ratchet strap got wrapped around my rear driveshaft and it managed to hook my brake line and it broke it. I also noticed yesterday the link bar on the front axle to control axle wrap is cracked and it blew out a bushing so I am gonna replace the bushing with a hiem.

any plans for the front yet?

Still debating on what I want to do up there. After wheelin it some I am getting more ideas but I am still not 100% sure what I want to do. I will probably just end up driving it how it is until I build a tube frame. I may end up just building a tube frame that way I can put the motor and everything where I want it and then put my cab and front clip on it or I may just end up building a whole tube buggy. I do know when I link the front end though I will be pushing the front axle forward a lot to clear the motor so that means I will need to redo the rear to move it forward as well. And at the same time I will be throwing a steering axle in the rear as well.

Robert,

Is your 454 stock?

How has it been performing?

I am rebuilding some 049 heads(new everything and will be shaved, so my compression should jump at least a point) right now and have a Performer 2.0 intake and an edelbrock 850 to slap on it before mine goes in the air.

oh yeah and headers......

I am just worried 300 horses and 450 ft/lbs will not be enough for mudding!

My TBI 454 is stock other than a MSD Pro billet distributor and MSD coil. So far it seems to have plenty of power. I am just running a 205 which is not geared very low and it does good with the 49's. It does need to be geared lower just to make crawling stuff easier but other than that there is plenty of power. If you are planning on doing cut boggers and expecting it to turn 5K RPMS in a mud hole I doubt that it would happen especially in a heavy rig. I did get a ledge this past weekend at shiloh and really laid the hammer down and I was able to catch 2nd gear a couple times and had the tires spinning really good so there is plenty of power for something like that I just dont know about buried up in a mud hole.

Thanks! You answered just what I needed to know. I need more power. I have been thinking about getting rid of my doubler and just running a 205, but I wan tot do some trail riding as well, so I will probably keep it.

Either way it looks like I m going to have to step up my cam choices, valve size etc...

For just riding the trails the 205 is geared low enough with the 49's. But when you get somewhere like Hot springs Arkansas and just try to crawl stuff it wasnt really low enough to just crawl. I was constantly on the gas and brakes at the same time just so I didnt get beat to death from bouncing around.

Ok its been a while since I updated this. I have actually done quite a bit since I have updated this. After tearing up the tires in arkansas I went ahead and put the 49" michelins on my beadlocks and I am not running them. I ended up going to shiloh for halloween and new years.
These pics are from halloween weekend. I did manage to break the welds in the front carrier so sometimes one tire would quit pulling and then the other would quit. After that I swapped in a new carrier and it seems to be holding up good. This is the first time I actually twisted it up really good wheelin.

When we went back for new years I actuallly did a lot more wheeling since I was with some other rigs. After the trip to arkansas I found out that the front trac bar that controls the axle wrap needed to be extended about 3". So I got a piece of solid round bar and cut, sleezed, and extended the trac bar. Well the welds didnt hold up. ALso between the halloween trip and new years trip I swapped out power steering pumps and put in a pump with a external reservoir. Now the steering works 20 times better. I do need to cut the reservoir and make it bigger though but for the most part it works great. And after the halloween trip I found out i couldnt go without a back window. It would just sling a lot of dirt up into the cab and it sucked!! I knew a I didnt want to waste time putting another glass window in there because it would just get broke again. So I ordered a piece of lexan and it ended up costing me $60 for a new back window and I just had to cut it to size and install it myself. I think it turned out pretty good and it holding up great so far.

This was a BIG ledge!! I backed up and just laid the pedal on the floor and it just would not go up it. I even caught 2nd gear a couple times so I know those tires were spinning. I hit it like 8 or 9 times. Finally it ended up breaking the springs in my seat and also the radiator popped out of the factory mount on the driver side and the upper hose got into the fin on the front of the altenator and it put a small pin hole in the hose. We just patched up the hose and kept going.

And now this brings us to the last wheelin trip. We went up to Gilmer to Barnwell mountain just for the day 1-31-09. It was actually a jeep run but I decided to tag along anyways. I didnt get any pics wheelin but did get some videos. I just havent been able to get them loaded. Here are some pics of the damage. This was the first time I had actually wheeled my own rig out there. We are going back the first weekend of march for Mega Run so I need to get my junk fixed before then. On the front end I put a piece of 4X4 square tubing and have the spring hangers coming off the bottom of it. Well the springs are pushing on the crossmember so much it broke the metal right beside the welds along the back side and started rolling it up. It would of been really bad if it would of broke completely off. Luckily it was towards the end of the day so I got to wheel pretty much the whole day.

And now that brings us today. Before I go back to gilmer I decided I want to get the bed back on. But in order to do that I have to dovetail it so that way I dont have to cut the whole bedside off just to clear the tire. I am sucking the sides in enough that the tire will actually be outside the fender. I started by unbolting the bedsides and then I just put the bed floor on the frame. And I started by cutting it to length at the end of the frame. Most people when they bobtail something they actually cut a section out and then weld the end back on. Well I am not that picky about it looking factory. The bedsides are already so dented up they wouldnt like back up anyways. So I am just gonna cut it all to length and then figure out how to fill in the ends with something. At the end of the bed it will be as wide as the frame on the inside of the bed. I didnt start taking any pics until I finished up tonight. I will have to get some better ones during the day.

Also I got a Warn Taboy 12K winch for the front. I am hopefully gonna have the bed finished up this weekend and get the winch mounted. Also I dont know if I am gonna work on it this weekend or not but I am gonna narrow the front some more as well. After wheeling at gilmer I noticed the front springs are getting broke in and it is really twisting up good. It eats up the fenders pretty good. I am gonna pull the fenders in to the end of the radiator. So it will probably be about another 10" or so on each side.

looking good. is that a receiver on the front of your truck? Are you gonna mount a cradle for the winch so it'll slide in the receiver or what's the plan?

Yeah that is a reciever that I use for a D-ring. If I make a platform to go in there the winch would stick out to far. I am gonna mount the winch on top of the 4X4 tubing. I will have to ditch the plastic grill up there but thats no big deal. It got broke at the last gilmer trip anyways.
