'86 Jimmy 4in Lift, 40’s, tons, 8.1 Swap- 700r4 said PNNNNN

This is not a dedicated trail rig, but does trailer to the destination usually. I am currently in the planning phase of doing a 52/56" spring swap, and getting back to being more road worthy.
I’ve gotten to the point where half of it just goes in the trash. Unless I can get $100 for it, it’s not worth dealing with the morons. I’d rather scrap it and go sit in my underwear in peace.
Kind of where I am.
I was a hoarder and now I am slowly going through and getting rid of cheap stuff so I can see the stuff worth selling hopefully in a year I will only have what I need left.

Now you got me thinking. What color?
I like the idea of leaving the aluminum unpainted, but I also know that I have never witnessed rattle can paint stay on an aluminum intake for years. Eventually it cracks, and flakes some of it. Heat cycles and not having the correct primer for aluminum is probably what gets to it.
I have even seen Cat engines lose paint from the aluminum parts, and that's pretty good paint!

So how about powder coating stuff for your wheeling truck???
:D :pimp:

There is a correct primer for aluminum.
Can't recall what I used. But I have painted intakes with etching primer then some black. And they have been ok.
Of course I shoot everything with a spray gun. Not alot of spray paint going on in the beagle shop.
I would paint it Black Greg. I like the black look like the LS1s....

Looks good with the paint job. Personally I like unpainted aluminum intakes on old motors. I think I'm a little noncommittal on a newer efi engines. I do like the block painted orange instead of black.

The problem for me is unfinished aluminum gets dirty to point you can't clean it. I haven't bought a new intake in a long time but the next time I need one I'll clear it before it goes on.
Greg's intake look like it had some of that ingrained dirt on it. If it doesn't come off paint helps it look new and not like an old junky engine. IMO.

It would be cool if the clear coat made it easier to wipe down.

I understand the ideas behind painting the aluminum, but if the dirt and oil isn't removed well enough, that diminishes the durability of the paint. Even if it's 2 part catalyzed paint.
The dulling of the aluminum is a kind of patina... :dunno:

My thoughts too. I’ll see how it cleans up, but that black is growing on me.

Ugly ass patina, that says my shit is old.

The best way is to toss it in the blast cabinet.

I didn't say that it was everyone's preference!
:haha:
Sorry, I just don't get the patina. You work hard, put your sweat, blood and tears into your ride. And then don't paint it because it sat out in the back forty for 35 years before you dug it out. And you think it looks cool.
Rat rods ,and patina needs to die yesterday.
Rant off.
