rather have the winch protected, I run the engo 12K and I'm not sure how it would fair slammed up against rocks.

But if you have an old school 8274 or a ramsey you'll have different options.
 
Cut the top part and front out enough to get to the handle.

May I also suggest ( and add a ton of work to your bumper build) to angle the lower portion in a bit. It looks nicer and can help in sliding over things
 
I try to stay out of crazy mud holes, pond crossings, or other intentional amphibious use of my truck. Maybe I'll take my chances at having to reach under.

If i moved it forward an inch or so, combined with a 1" body lift I could probably access it from the top side without having to hack into my already partly broken grill.

I'll fiddle with it and see. It actually shouldn't change my construction much at all the way I'm building this. Now is the time to make changes.

Although it's extra work I have cut the very front crossmembers out and rebuilt it several times to allow more room
 
I pulled my rear driveline and took it in to have the balance checked and the sloppy slip yoke addressed. Turns out I had a bent tube and a loose slip yoke both contributing to my residual vibrations. I had the offending section retubed, again, and phased / balanced with the yokes in line. Bolted it up and am now enjoying a very smooth ride! I hope this one goes for a while, I've had my fill of spending money on drivelines for now.
 
Ok I'm reworking my bumper design and would love some input before I pull the trigger.

I made it more angled, added some mounting points to the front cross member, like the no longer available TNA Winch Cradle. I will add some "wings" on the outside ends that go back to protect the fender corners. This bumper sticks out roughly 3" from the front of the truck.

This needs a 1" body lift to clear the winch, or cutting of the grill/support and also the winch is offset .75" to the drivers side to clear the frame rail. The low point in the center will be just about mid spring hanger. Bumper without winch weighs 75 lbs or so.

The main body will be all one piece, lasered out and bent .250" plate.

I will just simply weld in the mounting plates, gussets, and clevis pull points.

I haven't FEA'd this yet, but I will and post up the stress distributions from the winch loading.

Im going to get the sheet metal parts quoted at a local fab shop, if anyone wants to build one too, I'd be willing to order multiples, would definitely make them cheaper to build in quantity. I'm guessing this will be $300 or so in steel parts.
 
On the top make sure you can use those as a decent step. Unless it's already to tight.

I wish I had some cash. I like it alot and the jimmy needs a bumper lol
 
Also the strongest way to mount a winch is feet first. It can't be lasered and bent but cut out and added
 
I think I could make the frame mounts into a feet forward winch mount, similar amount of welding... I'll try it and see what it looks like.

It will make access to the clutch handle a little more restrictive.

I also like the bumper! I will be using a '79 K5 frame for my project, I am not sure how the frame height differs up front.
 
I like the bumper plans too!
Nice to be able to stand on it if there is enough room for your feet...bumpers out of tube suck!

I know they look different with the 79 having the rounded front frame horns, but I bet it would fit with this design. The bumper pokes out in front of the frame horn 3" or so. I don't have easy access to an older style frame, but I have my K30 and a 82 K5 frame and they are the same in the front portion. I'll share my drawings with anyone that wants them when I'm done.

I would be interested in that plan for sure! I know some guys that could cut it out for me!

I think what Eric meant was that you can "clock" it.... there's usually 6 allen bolts or something similar holding that on and you can take them out and rotate it. I did that on mine when I mounted mine behind the stock bumper.


On that note, cool build. Looks like a cool truck and I am paying attention to the bumper design as I need a better solution than what I have right now.

Yes I understand the clocking, I haven't taken the winch apart yet, It is a non-glamorous Harbor Freight 12K. Hoping I have good luck with it. I know several people that have them and they have not had any trouble with them, other than they are quite slow relative to other winches on the market.
