'86 K30 - the Resurrection

My 1 ton Chevy crash course learning experience~
I’d bet with it having the glow plug light indicator in the gauge bezel that it was originally a 6.2 diesel truck and that’s why you have the two battery trays, I’d be sure to check that the positive wire hanging isn’t hot while it’s laying there.

Love the look, I’d keep it as is, lose the front bumper in favor of an A-bomb, or at the very least a factory bumper with the horns!
I wondered if it originally came with the 6.2
I'd really like to get ahold of the RPO tag/invoice or build sheet but don't want to spend $50/ea.. Maybe I'll just have to break down and write Heritage a check..

The front bumper is definitely coming off but it's making a great stepping stool right now!

According to your vin the truck was originally equipped with a 350. The 8th digit is an "M" which lists as a 350/4bbl. The rest of it checks out as a 1 ton too with the 6th digit as a "3".

The vin don't break down the option content though. GM's part catalog used to break out the options on the older stuff, but it does not go back that far. Or else I would have already ran it for you.

I guess the bezel came later! That’s cool, less chance of having to deal with hacked up, cobbled together stuff!

I've tried making an appt, wouldn't let me. One of my employees has gone and sat at the DMV at 5am twice and didn't get in. I'm not planning to put it on the street till after winter so I'm in no rush. I just don't want them to try to charge me more for not transferring the title within 30days..

Yeah I got hit with a $100 late registration fee when I went through the new plates workflow online.

Those've been in there awhile. No wonder it didn't enjoy running. With these and the bourbon colored gas that came out of the tank, I'm surprised it ran at all.20201014_162642.jpg 20201014_162333.jpg 20201014_162433.jpg

It's alive!
I spent the afternoon doing what I could to tune it up. Plugs, wires, cap/rotor, pcv, and siphoned the rest of the gas out of both tanks. I filled the bone dry radiator with antifreeze and put a cpl gallons of fresh gas in the driver's tank assuming since the tank selector switch is missing, more than likely that's the tank being used.

I didn't get to check any other fluids b4 it got dark on me. One flashlight ran dead and the maglight fell knocking the bulb out.

I needed to move it to the other side of our lot due to a crane showing up in the am so I decided I'd just try driving it. After turning over a few seconds it fired up the next time I bumped the key. Sounds pretty good and no leaks.. so far. I know it's got an oil leak but it wasn't dripping.. The clutch feels smooth and shifts smooth. Altho when I went to turn a had a major pulsing in the steering and when I went to brake I had a mushy pedal and major pulsing. It stops from a roll..
So, the next list begins:
Diagnose power steering
Diagnose brakes
I have no running lights and no dash illumination but the brake and choke light are on and when I'm on the brakes both the blinker dash lights are solid...?

Another day and another 56 knuckles busted.

Congratulations on getting it fired up man!!! Big step forward.

Brakes shouldn't be too bad, probably just needs a good bleed.

That'll be a first for me but I'm willing to learn/try. I'm hoping that it's fluid related since the gas tanks were almost empty, the radiator was bone dry and the oil was so low it wouldn't register on the stick.. I'll be headed to work an hour or two early tomorrow to check the rest of it in the daylight.

How's your project coming along? Are you running it on the street yet?

Bleeding is super easy and really satisfying. I would almost call it fun.

This video is great in explaining the process:

In that tutorial he uses a homemade bleeder, here is the video on how to make it. Takes no time at all.

My K30 is street legal, I am really happy. I drove it this weekend to go play disc golf. It still has death wobble though... going to be working on it all winter. My K5 on the other hand has been in the garage for months now. It's almost done though (I hope)!

Sweet thanks for the vids! I just saw you were building a K5, gotta finish the thread up and see where you are. I did see where you stated you were the least knowledgeable member, that was 2018 but no matter what I'm that guy now haha~

Hey man, what's up lately? Hope you're still out there wrenching away. We should rendesvous sometime if you're around Denver.
