Well let me begin by saying sorry for a long post! I bought this 1986 k5 blazer a month and a half ago thinking I would throw a small lift on it, a set of new tires, and some new exhaust on it and I would be on my way. Well it has turned out to be completely more involved than I thought (not in a bad way though. lol). So any way, I buy the blazer for $1800 bucks which is a steal, for as good of shape as its in. I would bet money that it has never been offroad, plus it has no rust at all anywhere. The only bad thing that has happened to it, was that a teenage kid got a hold of it and sprayed it rattle can flat black:cookoo:! So I took it to my cousins shop to do a few small things to it, and ended up buying a parts blazer for $500 bucks. The parts blazer came with a 4.10 gear gm 10 bolt 8 lug front axle, 4.10 gear 14 bsf rear axle, drive shafts, good body, heavy duty front bumper with winch mount, good rear bumper, 8 lug wheels, extended brake lines, long tube headers, 700r4 tranny, np208 trans case, and other goodies minus the motor.

Since I decided to go 8 lug axles, I had to sell my XD wheels and Nitto tires off of my blazer. I got $900 for them though.

I found out a few weeks ago that the front ring gear is toast (it has two chipped teeth), and the rear spider gears are worn. So I just ordered a new set of 4.10 gears for the front along with an install kit, and a lock right locker for the rear.
axle.jpg

Anyway, the 2 weeks ago I ordered a pro comp intake manifold, a new hei vacuum advance dizzy, a rebuilt q-jet from a 70's model truck, and a lunati voodoo cam and lifter kit. I went to pull the engine apart, and everything went pretty smooth. Then I started to pull the cam while the motor was still in the blazer(big mistake). Not only did I ruin the one piece oil pan gasket(while removing the timing cover), but I nicked the front cam bearing. So rather than try to fix it in the truck, my cousin and I pulled the motor(my cousin in the picture by the way).

Well since I had to pull the engine, I decided to just rebuild it and spray it chevy orange.
I plan on using the 6" front leafs that I got from the parts blazer (since they are brand new), going with a 2" leaf in the rear with a 4" shackle flip, running 37x12.50x16.5 tires, keeping the weld 16.5" wheels that came with my parts blazer, running the long tube headers into a set of super 44's that I just picked up for free, and maybee a few more things that I might stumble upon in the near future. I got the engine on a stand last week and disassembled it. Went pretty smooth for the most part.

Found out that this is not the original engine that came with the K5. It's not a one piece rear main seal. But on the up side, it's a 4 bolt main that was not made in Mexico! After measuring the crank, I found out that I have a ten ten crank (.010 under on the entire crank).
crank.jpg

The pistons are still standered, but won't be for long. I found a pretty decent gouge in one of the cylinders.
cylindergouge.jpg

Got the engine sent off, and machine shop is going to bore all of the cylinders 30 over. They are also going to deck the block so that I have flat surfaces to work with. They are then going to send the block and piston rods back, with a new crank and with new pistons allready pressed on the rods for me. They will also send the rest of the master rebuild kit with the engine. I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I made a little more progress on the blazer this last week. I got the gears in and the pinion depth and backlash and pinion nut preload set. As you can tell in the pictures, I need to decrease the backlash just a tad to make it perfect, but the install kit I got didn't come with any shims smaller than ten thousandths. When I would try to decrease the back lash with a ten thousandth shim, the back lash would not be within the acceptable range. This was a close as I could get it. Since its the front axle I'm not to worried about it though.

frontgearscontactpatterncoast.jpg

After I got the gears as close as I could, I installed the axle housing under the blazer.

I spent the last few days putting the front axle back together. I got it almost all the way back together. I replaced every bearing and seal in the front axle, new u-joints in the axle shafts, all new ball joints for everything up front, and I even turned the rotors. The front end will be all new and look all new when I get the rest done and paint everything chasy black. All that I lack is putting the brake callipers and pads on, installing the fron tie rod (still waiting on the ball joints), installing the steering stablalizer (have it, but can't put it on until the tie rod is installed, and the front drive shaft.

So I am slowly working away at this project and hope to have it done soon. Here is a pic of how she sits now.

Looks like a solid project! Good luck with it, it seems like you have a good knowledge of what you're doing.

I'll be keeping an eye on it!

Nice. I like it. Very similar to what I did to mine in the last year, but without the engine rebuild. Currently contemplating an LS swap.

Well sorry I don't have any pictures to post tonight. I forgot to bring my camera to the shop. I got my engine back from the machine shop today though. I cleaned the block for the last time. I got the cam bearings in. I put the oil galley plugs in. I put all of the freeze plugs in. And I put the camshaft in. Everything went pretty smooth. Tomorrow I'm going in at 8 am to finish getting the rear axle under the blazer, and getting everything ready. My plan this weekend is to have all of the suspension, brakes, and everything done so that all I have to do is drop the engine in. I will finish the motor next week (since I can work on it at night after I get off of work). Then by the end of next weekend I should be ready to go. But we all know how that goes. I'll probably find something else that needs attention. I'll post a lot of pics tomorrow!

Here are a few pics from today. I got the entire front end done. Once I get the rear axle under the rear, I can bleed the brakes and slap some wheels and tires on.:woot:

Do yourself a favor, when you can, order one of those HD tie rods in the stock length from ORD. You will be able to reuse your stock (maybe new) tie rod ends. My stock tie rod bent up too easy on 33s. Ordered up one of those HD tie rods and have been wheeling a couple times now on 35s and it's still straight as an arrow and I don't think it's gonna bend up any time soon.

you also might want to look into longer front shackles. Maybe the newer length 4.5" that ORD sells or maybe even 5". I don't know much about this stuff but it seems that shackle angle w/ those lifted springs, is kinda off, since you already have weight on the axle. Other than that question, everything looks awesome and sooooo ready for abuse :)

Will do. You can tell how flimsy thet stock one is just by picking it up.

Yeah the shackle angle does look jacked, but its fine. My buddy and I stood on the bumper today once we got the wheels under it and the shackle angle was perfect.

Any ways I got a few more things done this weekend. I got the 14bsf out from under my parts blazer, and under my blazer. Holy **** are those things heavy when you are by yourself :eek1:! I moved it 6" at a time until I got it under my blazer :haha:.

I also got the lock right locker installed. I was pretty straight forward and took me about 2 hours(but I also replaced the axle bearings and seals). I turned the drums today, but still need to change the pads.

Heres how she sits for now. I should be getting some more paint tomorrow so I can paint the rear axle. I will also put some pads on the rear so I can throw the rear wheels on. So all I lack now is to rebuild my drive shafts and finish my motor. Oh and these are not the tires I am going to use, but I will be using the wheels(I love the look of them:waytogo:).

Shoes. You want shoes.

Lookin good. I like the look of those wheels, just too bad they are 16.5s. But they do look good.

And yes, wrestling around a 14bsf by yourself is no easy task. At least I was able to balance mine on a floor jack and wheel it under the truck. Doing that in the dirt musta sucked big time.

Lol. Yeah I want brake shoes not pads. I was tired when I wrote that.:D I am getting so close to finishing, I'm starting to get excited.:woot:Next project will be to order a new drivers door and paint it to match the rest of the blazer and then clear the whole thing.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the heads off of my truck are ****! They have the small 1.72" intake valves. Luckly my uncle has an extra set of heads with the 1.94" intake valves, that he is going to trade me. That alone should help we with a few more ponies. We are also ordering some 1.6 ratio roller rockers. It should be a healthy little 355 when we are done with it.

Well I got some more updates. :D
My uncle showed me how to recondition valves, so I got all of my valves ready for my heads.

valvesreconditioned.jpg

He also showed me how to press pistons on the rods, and how to put my pistons together. Unfortunately my block ended up having to be bored 30 over. After we got I got the pistons together, he showed me how to put them in the block. So I now have a short block, and I just need to get the heads finished.

I finally got new brake shoes on the rear. I got the brakes bled. I got the axle cleaned and painted. I even got the blazer back on 4 wheels. I still need to finish my drive shafts, but I'm getting closer.

Well I have been a little slow on the project lately, but I am still making some progress. I cut new seats in the heads. I assembled the heads with new heavy duty springs, and new 1.6 ratio roller tip rockers. I put the heads on the engine, and I now officially have a long block. The tins are in the hot tank now, and I will put them on the engine tonight. I hope to paint the engine tomorrow, and put the rest of it together the following night. I should have a running blazer by the end of the weekend. Here are some pics of what I did this weekend.

Oh and thanks for all of the compliments and replys. I'm glad that I have the opportunity to do all of the work myself. My uncle has been a great help on the engine side of this project, and selling me parts for the rest of the blazer. Since he only does motors, I have had to learn along the way with everything else. This site has been a great help to me. I have a lot of good parts left off of my project blazer if anyone needs some free body parts. Only problem is I live in Page, Az which is out in the middle of no where. If you happen to drive through, anyone is welcome to what is left. The frame is bent, but the rest of the body is there and is in decent shape. The top is in great shape.
