Alright guys. We are having a TIME with my buddy's new 86 blazer. For those of you who haven't seen my earlier threads, here is the story.
So he bought it Thursday evening, is driving it home and made it 30 miles then the thing dies on the side of the road. He calls me, I come out and start checking everything I know of, found that it had no spark. We suspected that the ESC module (I think that's what it's called, the module behind the glovebox) and its a carbd truck btw. So he called a wrecker and we had it towed home.

Next day: we try running a hot wire from battery to Batt terminal on the distributer, still no spark. Start checking things, coil has power, all connections are good. Tried bypassing the ESC again, still nothing.

Today: first we bought a new ignition module and new plugs and wires, still no spark, then we figure out that the coil had power going in but no power coming out, so we put a new coil on it, the truck fired right up... BUT, the wires on the top of the coil were sparking, loudly. There were nice blue sparks that were visible with the coil cap off and with the cap on you could hear them sparking. What is this???
Next, we try adjusting the timing, that had no effect on the sparking coil. So I tell him to shut the truck off. 5 mins later, it won't start up. Haven't touched a thing. It was doing the same thing as before, no spark again.

We took a break for dinner then came back out.
We thought we had burned the new coil up so we went and exchanged it for another one, picked up a new cap and rotor while we were there. Come back home, install it all, and it still won't start. And that's when we called it a night.

I'm going back over to his house to work on it tomorrow and need some ideas yall.

To sum all that up, we have replaced:
Cap, rotor, wires, plugs, coil and ignition module.

What else could be wrong? I am at a loss here guys. But ck5 hasn't let me down yet so I'm sure with yalls help we will git er dun.

Thanks

What do you mean by this?

Martin: I know it sounds strange, it is strange, I've never seen it happen before. But there were spark on top of coil, arcing between all the connector spades that come off the coil.
And livid4dirt, I can't see that pic, but we grounded the ground wire that grounds to one of the bolts that hold the coil on.

OK, there will be a thin bent piece of metal. It goes out to the main dizzy plug, the other ends is formed to go under one of the coil hold down screws. Easy to tell if it's installed or not. Look under the coil. I now realize you can't see images.

If you are talking about the little clip thing that came with the new coil, no we didn't put that on because the old one didn't have it so we figured it was for some different application. Could this be the problem that caused the Sparks and is causing it to not start now?

Very well is the cause of your problem. Without it, there is no way of transferring the ground connection.

Well then, just hook it up correctly and see what happens. You said you had power going through it, take a good look at the coil. Smell to check if anything burnt. Trust me, been there done that.

Took coil off, put that ground clip in and put it all back together. Still wouldn't start. Going to get another new coil now.

They are sensitive, if your electrical system is faulty. Make sure you use the white paste heat sink underneath of it.

Put the old ignition module back on and it fired right up. No sparks or anything like that. It's running great now. Problems seem to be solved. Thanks guys.
