Hey guys...

I picked up an 87 1 ton GMC 3+3 with D60 and 14bff and the 6.2l.

I have a quick question, what was the manual that came with this truck.

According to the gear shifter nob: it is a 3 speed with a granny. I did not crawl under this yet.

I will need to do almost a complete trear down, so I was thinking about upgrading the trans, suggestions. I want to stay with the manual, and dont want to fab alot.

Also, I check the 14bff and did not see a gear ratio tag, what was common with this setup: 6.2l and the 3speed with granny

Thanks,
Doc

Should be a sm465. Sounds like a pretty rare truck to me. If you want to upgrade the trans, then get a nv4500, basically same trans but shifts better and has OD. Alot of people do that swap, so theres alot of info on this site. As for the gears, I have no idea. My truck with the same motor/trans and 31" tires topped out around 55-60mph with 4.56's in 3rd, so maybe that can probably give you some idea until you can pop the cover off and check for yourself.

Thanks Protechk5....

Yeah been looking for a 3+3 4wheeler for months, this one was an old PG&E truck.

and it looks like it was painted with a roller and house paint... I have new power doors for it, but the cab will need to be stripped down alot....

My 82 k20 has 3.73's with a 6.2/sm465, I know mines just a 3/4ton but that will give ya an Idea as to what it could be.

Check the glove box and see what rpo codes it has. Also thats a nice start for a tow rig project, would love to find one like that.

i had a 85 crewcab 4x4 with the 6.5-they replaced the 6.2- 465/205 that had stock 4.56 gears.wasnt fast but would tow/haul anything i could get hooked to it or in it.
it got a solid 13 mpg loaded or unloaded and had a max speed of 70 mph but the engine was screaming at that speed lol.
