the rims where actually a fair amount of work, something to do at night while watching tv.. I'm happier knowing they'll clean up super easy down the road... Thats the kinda stuff that annoys me, pulling a tire and getting crud all over your hands... well, at least on my stuff....

Later when the budget builds up again after you get all this stuff done wyou could put some all terains on those and swampers on your original wheel idea. You did say 75% highway so it would make sence later after most of your build is done.

Thats a pretty good idea.

Those Super Singles are are PITA to keep clean, so if you keep'em off the trail it will be easier to keep up on them.

I'm not big on the idea of swapping tires out, not totally against it... But like ya said, I'll see what turns up down the road....

I think once I get the tube work, etc done in black, it should look pretty tough.. I know it'll be pretty capable....

hopefully I'll be burning some steel over x-mas break....

ok, we decided to forego the fingerpainting in kindergarden this weekend in favor of a doing a winch-mount..

here's how it started....


3" x 1/4" angle iron, with tabs welded at the ends..

it's location in the frame...

I chopped down Kerts backing nuts and ran a dual setup on the tabs.. ignore the short bolts and no washer, just mockup.. I have killer hardware at work for final install..

final bottom mount... I wanted a feet-forward mounting style..

top mount cut....

side-fill tabs....

here's how it looks under the rad support...

I was originally gonna bolt a 1/4 flat plate on the face of the 2 angle irons, with a hole cut for the rope and lever... But after getting this far, I think it'd be excessive... unneeded weight, and beyond overkill.. that'd be a 1/2" face plate to the winch... I could always add it later very easily...

as it is, it's rediculously stout....


next weeks episode, bumper fab.... or graham crackers and naptime, to be announced...

Looks awsome, is that winch supposed to be foot forward or did you rotate the lever? I see you have a body lift looks like thats the only way mounting like this would work?

thanks.. I'm VERY pleased with how it turned out.. Can't wait to get to the bumper...

I clocked the lever 90 degrees.. it's simple...

I'm not certain what they call for (I think feet down due to the lever placement), I've always heard anything above 8000 lbs, your better off foot forward... it certainly seems like a way waaaaay stronger way to mount it...

the top bracket is about 1/2" away from the rad support, so yes, without the 1" bodylift, you'd have to do something different with the brackets..

doable... actually you could almost do the same thing in reverse from top to bottom, mount the straight angle piece on the underside of the toprail, than something like my top one off the bottom rail... it'd drop it down a couple inches..

that'd still be fine.... mine is way up and in there... one thing I had to consider was being able to remove the winch without taking the bumper off... being the bumper is now becoming a bumper center attached to the B-52's, not a simple task to remove..

it's gonna be tight, but doable...

ok, here's what I've been working on the last couple days.... sorry for the load time....



fresh out of the blast cabinet....

zinced....

and so the bumper begins....

first thing was filling and smoothing the frame holes.. new ones are needed for the bumper...

I cut some slugs out to fill the holes..

finished horn..... the blue line is where I needed to trim the horn to, to make it flush for the bumper......

zinced....

then I needed to make the inside clevis mount... 3/4" stock... 1 1/4 clevis hole..... 1/2' bolt holes...

mocked up for trimming... hardware will be 1/2" fine thread.....

mocking up the side skid mount flange...

B-52 trimmed...

3/16th's gap that needs to be filled...

fill piece with weld-thru primer...

parts too...

my version of a lam bolted back up... chamfer cut for double bead....

shaped.....

zinced and on...

outside... dont mind the hardware....

most of the other side is to this point.... just need to weld it and shape it to get it as far....

the next step is to build the lower section and skid tabs, tieing the 2 sides together...

hopefully I'll be ordering tube this week to get going on the top... in the meantime, I'll build the removable skid....

oh, and the skid will be bolted up with countersunk ss allens, like these, in 3/8.

at some point, I'd like the build the skid from alum, but I dont have those skills... I have a friend who can hook me up down the road... for now 1/4" steel...

What kind of weld thru primer do you use/recomend? I see that Krylon has some - I just need to find it locally. I have one little spot I need it for (under the weld-on steering brace) and I'd hate to order a $30 can plus shipping for the "good" stuff just for that.

honestly, it's whatever my body supply guy is hawking these days... This stuff is made by like a german company, Car System... never heard of em... I like the last stuff he had better... I usually pay about $10 a can iirc... it goes a LONG way too..
