87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

ok, here's a minor pic udate since I said I would... it's all I have on the comp right now... the bumper is actually at work and much farther along..

but this may give you an idea of how the skid will be mounted.. the lower crossbrace is done, so the B-52's are now joined..... working on the skid.. and once I get tube, I can get the top done...

good update later in the week....

Paul, what is the width of those belts? My bike has belt drive, and I have seen many a "persuaded by barley Pop" fellas dump the clutch on them, and hasn't even Phased them. I'm sure you can attest from experience to the durability of them.

Man you do some cool sh!t....keep em coming man.

They're available in 10mm, 20mm and 30.. of course I've gotta go 30, but the cost increase is negligible.. so about 1.2"s wide each... not that I'm playing with the hotrod boats much anymore, but I've never seen one fail.. and it's not like I'm gonna be spinning 10 g's...

and thanks.... :D

I'm pretty stubborn about the way I want to build something... if that means extra labor, so be it...

I'm VERY pleased with the bumper so far... now, if I can just do the tube work without wasting any tube, I'll be golden! :doah::wink1::(:haha:

that'll be totally new for me, I'm VERY anxious.... :saweet::woot::grind::weld::hack::saweet:

I think yours is what mine will be like. My rockers are rusted out so in gonna cut them out and build the sliders into it

Looking good Paul :wink1: Any bets on what the final weight of that bumper will be

eh, I actually thought about that today...

the only thing thats gonna save it is, is how tight it is... I guess you could call it minimalistic Ryoken style.......

I'll know better once I get tube... anyone know what 2" .120 wall dom weighs a foot? :ears:

I talked to my friend about doing the skid in alum, prolly cost me 200 or so for materials and some coin to him... so at some point I will definitely do it..

but for now that'll be 1/4 steel... all the plate and strip steel I'm using is 1/4..... so there are some areas that are 1/2.. not to mention the tow points... :eek1::haha:

with that, i'm hoping to keep it around 100 lbs or so... bit less when i go alum... but I'm definitely gonna weigh it when done...

I'm hoping the ez-rides hold up, if not I'll have to step up to HD's..... :doah:

glass hood and battery location are gonna help too...

hmmmmm.... 2.4 lbs per foot for 2" .120

does that sound right?

I think that's what mine will look like. Looks sweet. Can't wait for more pics

:haha::haha:

sad thing is I'm waaaay old enough to remember those... :doah:

well, I just got off the phone with Pro Tools... this should be here on the 20th..

small_105.jpg

plus, my custom seats should be here sometime next week.. so alot of toys flowing in! :woot:

now I'm just working out the best deal on tube... I really have no idea how much I'm gonna order... I may end up doing EVERYTHING in 2" .120

figure I'll be picking up at least 100'.... depending on what I have to pay... wanna have enough for at least the bumper, and cage from the B-pillar forward... I can add the back cage and rear bumper later...

oh, some project musings....

one thing I realized once into this bumper was how outta practice I am at burning thicker steel.. hadn't done any in 10+ years, it's been all 18 g and thinner for a decade...

boy, I missed it, but I am waaaay out of practice.. inconsistent... I have no question on the strength, just the consistency of my bead asthetics.... some are decent, some look like I smoked a big bowl of crack before laying em! :doah::haha:

the bumper will be in a little bit of limbo till the bender gets here... tho I should be finishing up the skid/fairlead piece this weekend.... I have other projects to get back to tho... now that the seats are coming in, I can jump back on the tunnel/floor gig...

ran out of argon... hopefully tomorrow I'll be finishing up the welding and mounting the fairlead...

special package of joy coming tomorrow from Fed Ex, and the countersunk allen cap screws should be here tues, so I can mount the skidplate... bender friday.... :saweet:

nope, first I've heard of them.. I looked at the JD2 model 3 and the Pro Tools 105...

did the 2", 6" CLR die... I'll have to get a 1.75 at some point ...

tho, I'm gonna try the chopsaw notching, I am perusing around for a notcher...

I was eyeballing these, it's about 1/3rd the cost of the Pro Tools...

I can't believe the trouble I've been having sourcing DOM locally...:(

I can't find DOM tubing around me either. I would have to drive 4 hrs, or have it shipped.:(

yeah, I gotta call a guy back monday about an hr away.. he apparently orders it from time to time.. the other choice is about 2 hrs north... and I haven't even talked to them...

so next weekend I'll be setting the bender up, and hopefully the next weekend I'll have tube...
