87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

You could always run a LCD touchpanel connected to a CarPC running Linux on a SSD. Then you could run Megatunix to get additional gauges and tune when needed.

what kinda coin am I looking at to do a CarPC?

on a sidenote..... a recently got a pretty good laptop for free.... so I do have one for the truck down the road...

it'll be a year at least till I get to that phase 2 stuff, if not 2 years.. I'll prolly get 2 more years from the 350...

heck, if I get laid off, maybe 3... :doah::haha:

You can actually set them up with an Atom processor, or even a full P4 quad core for around 600. That includes motherboard, LCD, video, ram CPU, and hard drive. If you want to load MP3's, you might be a bit more for a bigger SSD drive.

Hey Ryoken, awesome build, as usual. Just a thought, I had a stereo with LCD display in a center console. It was VERY hard to read due to sunlight coming in at angles. Other times it was just fine. Again, it's just a thought.

Your build is a HUGE encouragement to me! I'll never be able to do even a portion of what you have going on, but it does give me the energy to attemp a lot of new things I've never done before.

Can't wait to see this thing drive out of the garage!!

Here's one from another forum. It is being used to display all the gauges in a crawler...

Motherboard is an Intel ITX with an Atom processor (1.6 ghz single core - no need for dual). But what I'm excited about is the thing to the right, a solid state 32gb hard drive - boot up times should be a lot faster than a mechanical hard drive! Cant wait to boot!

I'll try setting up and installing Xubuntu for Tunix testing maybe tomorrow.

mobo_hdd_ram.jpg

The motherboard/processor combo cost about $65.

The SSD is this one. NEWEGG Currently $95 for 30 Gig.

You would also have to get a power supply and case. The Power supply can either be a regular AC power supply run from an inverter or you can source a DC-DC power supply to run directly from the truck's electrical.

He said the PC boots in 13 seconds on a fresh install of Ubuntu.

thanks bud, that means alot.. It means a ton that guys that are into this stuff appreciate what I'm trying to do.. or at least if they dont like it, respect the amount of work it takes... As we all know, the majority of sheeple have no clue... :doah:

I'm just grateful to have made the effort to get some more shop equipment... 5 yrs ago, these projects would have taken 5 times as long.. and thats scary considering I probably have 1000 hrs in the truck the last year... :doah::(:haha:

I'm hopeful that the way I'm coming out of the stock dash with the console will shade it to some extent with it's funky angles, etc in the middle and help with any glaring......

on that note.....

sweet..... :D I know who I'll be PMing when I need to get hardcore on the research on Megasquirt...

I have read a fair amount over at http://www.diyautotune.com/

but I've made it a point not to venture into the forums and such as of now... it's aways down the road, there will probably be new products out for it by then.. so I just wanted the basics of what was available info-wise...

I really like the idea of a PC based system... and when the time comes to do it, I'll want state of the art... that solid state harddrive sounds slick...

how crazy can I get as far as the touch screen LCD's go? size, quality, etc? high end stuff.. and car PC systems in general?

fock that.. I want a flush mount touchscreen LCD like this one.. 12"...

hell, I'm blind I need a big screen... :haha:

what? it's only $600 :wink1:

I am doing staked cage tie-ins too.. something like these, but my tube will have a bolt-on flange at the frame end too...

Awesome build! :thumb:
I can't post the pic because I've been doing to much lurking and not enough posting but it was midway down page 94. I am going to try to do something similar with the cage support tied to the frame with a bushing and am trying to figure out the easiest way to do a bushing setup similar to this. Should I just cut and weld tubes from scratch? is there anyone that makes some sort of fabricators set? and what bushings? Cost vs. time. I can fab it all myself but if I could find these that I could just cut to length for my app I'd save a ton of time. Oh yeah and I'm definatly subscribed, keep up the great work!

I was just reading throught the wireing section again and wanted to ask how many circits you ended up with and what the overall price for the fuseless breakers set up you went with.

I know thats a back track to whats happening now but Thats the 1 mod that just blows me away with its awesomeness. and one I definatly want to replicate.

I would also like to do it in a marine sealed glove box like I have seen on the net. The one I was looking at was about 5" tall 10" wide and 4" deep. and you just cut the hole and it had a surface lip to bolt it in.
I cant seam to find it now

Theoretically you could put any size LCD in that you can fab up a mount for. Realistically, you would be better off with some sort of ruggedized automotive spec screen.

Not sure on ruggedness, but how about a 10" touchscreen for ~$200. Link

thanks!

and as mentioned Kert has bushing Fab sets http://www.diy4x.com/main.htm

so does http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/index.php iirc..

those actual tie-in bracket kits are from http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/Cage-Tie-In-Kit-p-433.html

You know, old man:wink1:, if you wanted to use that 12" LCD, then you should look for a way to isolate it from vibration. Even the best automotive can't take much abuse, and our trucks are definitely more abusive than the average vehicle on the market these days. Just an FYI. I would hate to see you spend $600 and then have it break after a couple wheeling trips, and I realize it is down the road a bit.

As for a power supply, there was one shown in the communications thread that was $100 and is a direct 12v supply so you don't have to have an inverter or anything else for power supply than the stock system.

As always, just trying to give you some ideas for the future, now get to work, then get home and start working on this truck again.

I was getting away with 12, but it'll be 18 when it comes back out.. that leaves a couple for expansion if needed... 15'll get me by nicely..

now as far as costs go.. those red breakers in the glovebox

glove.JPG

run the average public about $15 a piece.. I was paying $6... now they cost me $9... you can do the math.. there are cheaper breaker options available obviously... I'm stubborn and want what I want... :wink1:

there are a few companies that make nice marine breaker panels, we deal mostly with bluesea..

here's a little unknown build history.. originally when I decided to run a breaker panel, I was gonna put it in the late model console, slope-down, where the LCD is going... glad I didn't now.. but it would have been pretty sick...

I was gonna run a prebuilt Blue Sea psycho one... meters, yada, yada.. something like this..

morning bud! :D

boy, thats ironic you called me old man... I had to install 6 8D bats in some BAD spots the other day, and my back is really fubared this morn... takes alot to screw my back up... gonna be a long friday! :(:doah::haha:

anyway, thanks on the LCD tech... that was a 5 minute search, didn't even read that one in particular, but I thought it was an "auto" one.. like I said, down the road, so hopefully they'll have made some improvements in that time...

at this point, the mounting idea was a hole in the composite, with the lcd mounted to the back.. but that was the megasquirt one... I definitely want tough, reliable and durable... those are #1.. but I'll definitely dump more coin to get the largest good one....

I haven't decided what I'm gonna do about an AC system in the truck... the welder has that covered for running corded items, etc... but I've certainly considered an inverter too.... see, these Hinckley's my company makes get wayyyyy overcomplicated and fancy with their electrical systems.. LOTS of different inverter tech being applied.. so I'm kinda up in the air on the AC stuff..

but I would guess, the megasquirt engine management setup needs about as reliable a setup as you can get... don't wanna be stranded cause an inverter went up in smoke on the AC side of it all..... :haha:

right now I'd lean towards a 12v for the pc supply and have the welder for power tools...

wow, thats a smoking deal!!! :eek1: I'm gonna go crazy staring at a big blank spot in the console waiting to do this project.... :doah::wink1:

Don't forget that the lcd and carpc have nothing to do with the Megasquirt ECM running the engine. They are a nice addon which allow you to display gauges and to on the fly tuning, as well as watch shows, use GPS and listen to mp3's....

But if they go out, the Megasquirt ECM will still function fine.

stranded wasn't probably the best term...

I have to wonder how clean the sine wave on the 12v supplies for the PC's are? They still have to have an inverter somewhere in the mix? some of the stuff we run in the boats are freakin nuts.... big dollar units.... need to work on acquiring one of those...:whistle:

Just a mental note on what I was blabbering about earlier with the exposed tube in the console idea... I got it from thinking about the overhead console... basically it's mirroring that to some extent....

well, sat morn and beat the flock up... :haha::doah: rough launch week!

scorecard for the week...

sore back - check
dreams of management killing sprees at work - check
1/2 dozen bleeders - check
unshaven - check
beer and smokes for weekend - check

energy to fab - not so much :doah: eh, lets see what I can get done..:deal:

oh, when looking up horizontal bandsaws and chucks for the lathe this week, I found this... I want!

t10091.jpg

deburring and bevel cutter... cool..... :saweet: not bad at $200...

Sounds like SOP to me:haha:, though it is a little easier to work through the pain when you're working on TOYS!! Makes me think back to the days of smoking and drinking. Quit the drinking about 3 yrs ago, mostly out of survival issues, I was a HUGE overindulger:whistle:. Don't miss the smoke in the eyes and nose, or the ashes everywhere, though. I don't think I could afford to smoke anymore. I quit the first time when they went up to a buck a pack. Made it 7 1/2 years. Started again during my divorce, quit when I was doing the $9.98 3-pack special for Marb reds in a box...daily! Now it's been almost 11 years. Thanks God!!

Hey, have a great weekend. Looking forward to the updates:bow:!!

drinking generally isn't an issue... I can go months without... Tho as mentioned the last 6 months work has really been making that bad.. last couple weeks I've put it back under control...

smokes are a whole other story.. It's my bane.. :( when I had my heart attack, I quit for 8 months, had it beat.. need to work up a pair and do it...

and hope your weekend is good too... time to go fire up the dungeon... :haha: I'd like to have the rockers done this weekend... anxious to move on...
