87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

I have to wonder how clean the sine wave on the 12v supplies for the PC's are? They still have to have an inverter somewhere in the mix? some of the stuff we run in the boats are freakin nuts.... big dollar units.... need to work on acquiring one of those...:whistle:

The 12V supply shouldn't have a sine wave at all, it should be flat DC. A 12 DC-Dc PS doesn't have to have an inverter, just some voltage regulators and the associated circuitry. The automotive platform is challenging because of the variable nature of the alternator output. A good power supply would also filter out the ripple on the vehicle's system.

huh..... so the mb/processor, etc can run strictly off DC current? been awhile since I screwed with building a PC...

would I be better off with a nice Charles inverter in the rig? I install those quite often on the boats and might be able to come up with one... mostly see the bigger stuff, but I see they have what they call an "on the go" package too... I know the bigger ones I install are pretty sweet...

Yup, PC power supplies are basically AC to DC converters (and voltage regulators).

Kinda silly to have an inverter in the mix, then you'd have:

AC at the alternator converted to DC with the rectifiers.

DC converted to AC in the inverter.

AC converted back to DC at the PC power supply.

:D

so whats the best way to deal with fluctuating alt output for the PC supply?

I like simple... :wink1:

If the DC power supply that comes with the PC is a good one, it should take care of the fluctuations and ripple.

cool.....

boy, chopping the whole dash out would make this soooooooo much easier....:doah::haha:

why am I so stubborn... :(:confused::doah::haha:

well, after doing some mockup today, it looks like the widest LCD I'll be able to do is about 10"...

came up with some pretty sick ideas on the console... I'm stoked...

eh, I guess I should have figured this would come up...

nope, don't want Kerts, it's badarse, but it's bought, not built, not mine...

I'd do my own tube/composite custom.. certainly no diamond plate... it's a played out look imo, and doesn't "fit" the build..

The reasons I didn't wanna go full custom dash are

1 - It's the easy way out..
2 - It loses ANY sense of a factory look at that point... buggy interior..
3 - tho I could incorporate the glovebox breaker panel easy enough, I'd have to ditch my bezel... Just can't do it, sentimentality and all... I think it was the first real mod I did to the truck.. kinda, it's calling card...

What I just came up with is pretty intense I think.... The fact I'm maintaining the dash pad and a fair amount of dash steel makes what I'm doing that much cooler.. if it was running up to tube, eh...

The lower dash metal is now going black.... and I'm definitely doing a 1 1/2" crossbar from A tube to A tube, up in the dash.. waaaaay up in the dash.. :doah::wink1:

I've also incorporated a spot for a 10" sub down the road..

and I'm really digging this pc enclosure for when I get to that..

Im pickin up all your layin down I asure you. Blending the cage into the stock dash will be an awesome feat. Im sure youll do it in a way that looks almost factory. And your dash is very sweet.

For me and my 79 crew cab Its just gunna be easier to tear out the old and put new in. Probably my BIGGEST pet peave is previous owner hack jobs on the wiring. My poor crew cab had it bad I dont even know what works and what doesnt at this point because all the crap wire hanging down I just ripped out and threw away without regaurd for what it went to. Thre was every kind of wire in there from speaker wire to lamp cords and even a few solid core wires.

Im also gunna simplify the heatrer system and seal up th firewall as much as possible. Cutting the dash out will be the simplest way and clean everything up. However once kert gets the alum dashes going I will have him mirror the drivers side. I would like the gauges on the driver side and the circit breakers on the pass side in modular form.

sorry didnt mean to write a novel LMAO :doah:

novels are fine, I certainly churn out a few...

And yeah, for alot of guys Kerts is an awesome solution.. bout time someone came out with one! :doah::wink1::haha:

one thing I did realize tonight after fitting up the seats is that now, I'm definitely adding custom door panels to the mix... great there's another 40 hr gig probably.... :doah::crazy:

if you do ever want to do a dash.. I was actually going to tell you about these a while back. The OEM looking one makes for a nice clean start for guages, ac/heater ducting and your computer brain box! I do want to say though I really admire and am impressed by your design and execution! Your truck is build needs to be called inspector gadget ! Keep it up!

Mcneal racing sales a custom or oem appearance dash.

:eek1:

wow, that thing is psycho... haha, I'm digging the dashmount A Carr! :haha:

and thanks Shawn....

You did that just to make my ears perk up didnt you.

once I got the seats mocked up, I realized the factory, hard plastic, door armrests where unnecessary and somewhat in the way.. the seat shape basically has it's own armrest..

as for an idea, pfffft, nothing yet.. probably some flat panel thing with the composite...

I'm definitely going with a PC at some point.. no question... started researching em last night...,.

next purchase item is without a doubt tho, a 1.5" die for the bender...:deal:

just a minor update....

bent the A-pillar tubes this weekend... not much else other than a ton of mockup stuff, organizing, etc... hacked the center of the dash up for some sheetmetal mods I need to do for the center console...

just a couple pics for now....

A-post hack out...
