87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

At first I thought there'd be enough space to mount anything, but damn that space goes fast.

you ain't sh*ttin.....

it's a series of compromises.... one reason the middle section is "lower" on the seat, than say how the back angle bars are, is because if i come into the dash any higher, I'll lose valuable LCD space... as of now, the angled LCD section of panel will be about 11" x 11", might be able to squeeze a 10" in there....

the other advantage to the lower mid section is keeping the shifters a tad lower allows more front to back positioning of the shifter and still have it be comfortable..

that storage area is up for change, dependent on how the e-brake works out... another part i need to put on my list... the AC and NWF twin stick should sit side by side nicely... should leave a little section in front of them for a couple drink holders possibly.... but generally the design has VERY little room for storage.. so much so, that is has become somewhat of a consideration at this point... where's the PC going, heater (think I have a pretty sick idea for this), where am I gonna store this, that, etc....

On the little flat section, at the top, back at the b-hoop, I'm considering doing a little heavy duty flip-up lid for a deep, say, map storage, behind the subwoofer...

trying to keep nothing under the seats on a permanent basis...

Nice tube placement. Is that going to be the new trans tunnel?? or does it suport anything like a Tuffy center console or anything?

thats the console frame, the tunnel is below the seat bars.. you can see the tunnel outline on the passenger-side shots, or back a page or 2 in the thread......

Ahh, got'cha. Looks real good man, keep up the progress. When you make progress like that it's fairly easy to stay motivated.

sure is...

Thanks Rob..... your cage was inspirational for me....

thanks guys..... :D I'm pretty amped about it.... :woot::saweet:

so, after relooking at the console tonight, and planning out the mounting tabs for the composite panels, I've had a few thoughts...

1 - the side panels that run from the tube down to the tunnel will be recessed 1/2way in on the tube..

2 - putting a 10" LCD in might be rough... the panel tab mounts for that panel MAY be an issue.. worst case, i run an 8".....

3 - looks like I'm gonna be adding a side to side tube at the front and back lower bends between the console bars... I wasn't sure if I would have to, but it looks that way now due to the LCD/top/back flush panels match-up in the corners.... breaking it off into 3 individual panels....

should look something like this........ you can see the forward one here.....

need some opinions, suggestions....

I had decided to run a single 10" sub in a recessed panel/enclosure between the seatbacks....

tho I've been preoccupied figuring out the front of the console/dash/lcd, I just realized I can probably end up with a fair amount of room left if I keep the sub enclosure to a minimum...

i'm thinking i can definitely at least have some cubbyhole/storage area too... but now I'm wondering if I can run some other component in there... I'm thinking the PC wouldn't be a good idea due to the proximty of the sub.... maybe the amp?

thoughts, suggestions? :ears:

oh, should have a damn substantial update in a couple days.. gonna kill it this weekend... :wink1:

Paul,

What are you using for storage in that PC? Standard HDD or Solid State disk? SSD won't care about vibration, but conventional HDD certainly will....

If it were me, I'd pick the sub first then check the spec sheet to see what kind of volume the enclosure is supposed to be. Odds are good that your decision about placement will be made for you based on where you can fit all those needed cubes.

It's also true that bass is non-directional, but there is a good chance that you aren't going to like feeling bass pounding straight into your elbow... it could get annoying. If you can make the sub downward firing and have it play into the floor (maybe 2" or 3" off the sheetmetal) you'd get a good coupling effect and avoid the elbow-bass issue.

:usaflag:

or you could not put in a radio and listen to the sweet sound coming from the engine.........not going to happen but its a thought :D

wait a minute...... if I remember corectly your not going to be running any rear seats.

SO why aree you even consitering wedging a sub into the console? You will have gobs and tons of room for subs behind you. I dont recall any plans for back there but if I missed them fill me in. You could build a fibergass down firing box that would be weather tight, put it behind you somewhere?

Magnetic storage media will get forgetful near the sub as well.

FAIL. :D

Here's a seriously divergent thread topic, pasted from an old Lounge thread on magnetic recording and coercivity....written by yours truly:

There's no WAY any sort of speaker magnet can erase the data on a hard drive. That was an old floppy disc trick, but is completely ineffective on the HDD.

The coercivity (measured in Oersted = Öe) of the media inside an HDD is insanely high compared to a floppy disc. (One of our newer HDD designs is in the 5250Öe range vs. roughly 800Öe for a floppy disc. You'll never generate enough magnetic field with a speaker to change the magnetic domains on the surface of the disk.

Keep in mind, the actuator assembly (where all the read/write heads are mounted) itself is basically a magnetic "sandwich" that sits right next to the outer tracks of the disk. If simple magnetism was enough to erase data, you'd never have any data in the first few thousand tracks of your drive!! :yikes:

There ARE products that can actually erase a hard drive..... here's one for example:

http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/c...asure-p3m.html

A bit more involved than the "speaker trick" but this thing generates enough magnetic field to completely destroy all the user data, as well as all the original servo position information, factory format, and even blows the read elements on all the heads! Very satisfying indeed....

It is interesting to note that with the increasing areal densities that HDD manufacturers are pursuing, the coercivities are being pushed much higher. So high in fact, that the magnetic domains won't even change state when a magnetic field is applied by the write element...the magnetics are simply too strongly biased in their current positions. The drive actually has to use a small heating element located just above the media to heat the appropriate sector just before it attempts to write data. This temporarily reduces the coercivity and allows the data to be written.

Seagate calls this technology HAMR (Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording)...

Cool stuff.

:usaflag:

Ouch, I didn't even read all that and my butt still hurts. :doah:

I knew you could kill floppies and figured HDDs were similar. Apparently Not.

hmmmm, downfiring, hadn't thought of that...

I'm really trying to keep the back all business... work/recovery stuff, room for an air matress, hauling, etc... mounted to the back of the lower section of the b-hoop will be a flat fiberglass wall... it will have a series of compartments, cubbyholes facing the back... about 5" deep probably..

I just thought it would be a pretty trick spot to put a sub... but maybe i can find a good spot in the back off to the side for a sub box... guess i'll figure that out when i get the back cage in...

if i can run the sub in the back, then I'd love to make that between the seats area the spot for the PC... if not, i'll do a downfiring sub there between the seats... there's actually a fair amount of space there... just not crazy about putting the PC next to the heater up front...

I'm not sure if i'm going SSD or a standard HDD yet.. i'll see what the "hot ticket" is when go to buy components... one thing I'm trying to do is avoid running a standard stereo head unit... i want to run it all out of the PC...

how about amps? they'd be ok run near a sub right?

thanks for the imput guys!:bow:
