looks like a pretty cool little company.... I'm gonna pick up a bottle of their setting solution and satin coat too.... I know the obvious thought is durability, we'll find out... i may do the satin coat if i feel it needs it.. but if it ends up i need to redo a letter here and there over time, so be it... i'll give it a shot.. :o



gonna see some drastic changes in the truck over the next few months hopefully... :wink1:
 
are those the ole dip in water to loosen them from the backing?

I had some of those for my valve covers, and dam did they tear easy.

I remember the old model kits (40 years ago) they seemed more durable back then.
 
yup, oldschool soak in water type...

I'm sure it'll be a ridiculously tedious task doing this, with a couple lost letters on the way... but i think it may hold up decent once applied and dry...


as some may remember, i was gonna have my boat name painting buddy hook me up with the lettering... what i'd really like is a peal off sticker set... like where the colored letters are cut, but the white backing isn't.. then you'd just peal em out and stick em.. but i haven't found anything like that...

next best choice for now... if it doesn't work, i could always do the hand lettering, which would be sweet... nicer than these, i'm just avoiding farming work out...
 
Depending on how much $$ you want to spend, I've used a place in Colorado that does dry transfer labels you create your own artwork for. That would save you from having to rub down each individual letter and will reduce any misalignment. Then you can spray some clear coat or fixative over it.

stenciling..... i'd be more than willing to do this, just can't figure out a good way to do it.. i'd really be afraid of bleed-thru.... the stencil would really need to be adhesive.... not to mention that you would have to probably do individual letters, let dry move on...



12voltguy........ i've seen his offering...

#1 - i definitely dont want white... i'd consider a silver or platinum type color, but i really want something orange...

#2 - my lettering all needs to be the same size, MUCH smaller than his offering... letter height being something in 1/4" to 3/8" range

#3 - that being said, the physicality is what i was looking for, an adhesive vinyl sticker... might be worth a call to see if could he could do a custom color letterset...


originally i was thinking of talking to our sticker guys on the board, i think MrK5 does stickers? and asking them for help/info......


dry transfer stuff sounds VERY intriguing.... THAT definitely may be worth a call...

I'd be willing to shell out a few hundred to do this in a heartbeat. heck, i'm willing to pay my name painting friend to do it... and i really think that would look tits... that little "attention to detail" feel... wish i had the skills to hand letter it myself... :(
 
I'm in the same position right now. When I do all new gauges I need to create a new way to have turn, high beam, cruise, brake, and a couple other indicator lights, and I need a way to explain each one. I may try stenciling myself, but I need to do some practice work with the airbrush to get it right before hand.

All that to say I am still watching to see what you come up with.:grin:

in reality, I'm being a tad impatient, this is all kinda pre-emptive.. :crazy: :haha: in a few weeks when i have some color in the cab, the composite is black, CB and switchs mocked in (waiting on the breakers), mounted to the cage..... i'll put a seat in it and give it a good look.... thats when i'll know which avenue to pursue...


the killer way would be to disassemble the console and bezel, and have my friend hand-letter them in some cool font and matching custom orange of the cage, seats, parts............
 
One other thing you might want to look into is scrap booking resources. My wife does that stuff all the time and they have literally thousands of various fonts available in self adhesive letter sheets in all kinds of colors.

This got me to thinking about my console and dash. A quick Google of dry transfer decal paper got me this link. Check out the aircraft dashes in the customer photos. The cool thing is all the choices of colors. It may be overly complicated to do, but I think I'll research this a little more, maybe even order a kit to play with and see how durable the transfers are.

If you could do that too I'd be expecting you to walk on water next:D.

That dry transfer set up looks very clean and without the PIA of individual letters.

Keep up the insanely killer work:bow:.
 
The dry transfer stuff works well on smooth surfaces but not as good on heavy textured surfaces. The letters themselves are very thin and it takes a little practice to get them down without messing them up. Super small lettering is also more challenging because there's less surface area for the adhesive.

You can get custom colors and even metallic or pearl colors though. They are expensive though so I'll warn you in advance.
 
You could always offer that boat name painting buddy a case of beer or a bottle of jack, maybe both:wink1: To stop by and paint some letters..

Might be best to let him paint before drinking said payment.:D:haha:

I'll check into scrapbook stuff this weekend... heck, maybe i'll wander thru AC Moore one day..... :haha: I'm also gonna stop in my local hobby/rc shop....


i'll definitely look at the dry transfer stuff this weekend too.... the panels will be a very smooth satin black... those are the ones where you use a wood stick and rub on the wax paper side?

now, engraving.... i had thought of it, yeah, 3Ding it would be sick.... come in after and fill the depression with the orange cage Imron.... bad arse...... :saweet:

bet that would be pricey as hell to send those 2 pieces out for that... :eek1:

I've also seen laser etching look pretty nice. If you spray the panel orange, and then add a coat of black, they can etch just the top/black layer away and you get orange lettering showing through. Lots of automotive stuff is done like that especially when the substrate is translucent so they can backlight/illuminate the graphics. I don't know where I'd go to get it done in the U.S. though.

thats one thing I can laugh at myself about..... :o

when it comes to graphics, if i can tape it off, stencil it or do fades of some sort with an airbrush, candies, flames, etc, I'm not afraid of any job, I did a TON of stuff like that in the 80's, early 90's..

but ask me to draw/paint a person, animal, etc, freehand stuff? it'll look like a monkey drew it.... :haha:

I'm sure the one you pick will be bad arse. :waytogo: :D

We've got a laser marker at work that is pretty darn cool. We just use it for text and 2D bar codes on aluminum, but you can do amazing things with it.
