87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

I'm sticking with them because I'm trying to go with most common(parts), least electronical(less to break), most reliable, apocalyptic style rig I can.......with a blower lol

im only asking as i passed on a bbc as i just like sbc..... i too will be doing a 383 eventually... hopefully in 3years... but hopefully doesnt take me as long as it took for me to rewire my truck!!!!!
 
Did you shoot it in clear or just leave it as-is?

actually it's cast aluminum engine paint.... i sandblasted it, and it came out clean and sweet, but a tad course for just clear.... if i had a glassbead cabinet, i probably would have just shot some Imron clear over it.. so I gave it a couple piss coats of yellow zinc, then the paint...

like i said, i wasn't overly concerned as it'll more than likely be swapped out in a couple yrs, just wanted it to look decent...

it's the ultimate self-etcher... good to use on steel, but vital on aluminum, and galvanized... 9 out 10 times if you see paint "fail" on al or galvanized, it's because it doesn't have that under it... we see tons of it in the marine biz, manufacturers put just paint over alum parts, and in a couple yrs, it's peeling off in sheets... doesn't need to be thick, just an etch coat to bite into the al...
 
I was thinking more along the lines of preserving the truck from salt, since the other coast seems to love that crap.:doah: Out here in Washington, we use a glycol based antifreeze on the roads, safe for steel, but hell on aluminum.

I have absolutely no understanding as to how I missed this thread for so long, I am totally jealous, I'd love to make a ride like this of my own. I think the first time you wheel it, you'll be afraid to do anything serious because it is so pretty.

obviously you don't know me very well.... :wink1: :haha: actually i'm sure i'll be getting a feel for the truck initially, and still breaking it in... but i have no compunction about romping on it... dents = character :pimp:

I am a body guy after all.... i actually can't wait for the first time i get to wash all kinds of goo out of it... that's been a major part of this build, the waterproof aspect of it, composite, coatings, etc...

and yes and no on the salt aspect.... obviously the topcoat paint is what is subjected to roadsalt, but the zinc is part of an overall coating system desgined to be as bulletproof as possible... sealing off the steel and having excellent adhesion between the different materials...




hardware order coming in today.. the motor should be going in for the final time sat or sun... and hopefully i can get the rad support blasted this weekend..

So it's like a protective barrier while being a paint primer at the same time? lol

Does that mean in another 30 years when all of our trucks have rusted and crumpled into disrepair, yours will still be in one piece?

it wont have rot thats for sure.... :deal: i'll probably be on my 6th motor, etc, tho! and have a wheelchair lift to get in it too... :doah: :haha:

So do you have to use different types of the Zinc Chromate for different metals??? And have you ever used it on a vehicle on salty roads? Im just wondering if i should strip inner fenders and rockers and other salt bearing areas and spray it on and repaint them for protection.

as to the zinc... no, same zinc for everything.. the rattlecans come in green or yellow... i just happen to have some yellow around... i tend to prefer the green tho... professional 2-part zinc washes thru a gun are better, but even i cut my corners here and there for convenience...

i've been using it on vehicles that see salt for about 25 yrs... but as i mentioned earlier the zinc really isn't helping so much with the salt, as it's under primer and paint usually... but it does make the whole paint system that much better adhesion-wise...



steering box and brace are in, fush's are in, front springs are in.. tomorrow i'll get the motor in hopefully...

Well if it bonds better to the primer, and paint wouldnt that help the paint stick better theirfore stopping the salt alot more?? Idk just really dont want this thing to rot out and i didnt quite get it as undercoated as i would have liked before winter. I ran herculiner bedliner along the bottom foot under the trim and inner fenders as much as possible to keep out the salt, but thats too hard to get in tight spaces. Just figured you know alot about painting so you would be the guy to ask.

Love your truck by the way, its georgeous lol :eek1:
