87 K5 Build...Hmmm, whats that Ryoken up to? stay tuned...

which ones?

what's actually there now...have you ever shown a photo of the kick panel areas...are you putting panels on the "inside" of the tube?

I just noticed the panel that covers the center tubework...makes it look like a console....neat!

no... the vent has been welded up and it's just smooth sheetmetal on either side.. i'll dig up some pics...

hmmmmmm, I have to go waaaaaaaaaaaay back to find any.. i'll take some tomorrow...

kickpanel... basically the stock metal behind the plastic, just the big vent hole is filled..

ok, lammed a small lower lip to the bottom of the ECM board... need to paint it still...

here's the panel locked into it.. and you can see the new metal up top for the latches to hook to...

the panel actually comes over to the door/cage a 1/2".. it's slid over the top of the console panel a bit...

:haha: friggin nailed that angle on the console panel back when i made it on a total guess! :woot:

just gonna put a lip on the backside to act as a stop and just let it slide/lock in over the top the panel thickness.... should lock in real nice...

tomorrow I'll finish the metal work.. needs a fill strip on the left side and a taper piece on the right..

as you can see, the right side has to end over by the cage tube and can't go all the way to the kickpanel or you'd never get the piece in.. like the dash cutouts...

anyway, being the ECM panel ends there too, I'm gonna build a right side wall to that panel to close it off... like a triangle over to the firewall... I'll get that going tomorrow too..

semi change.. ditching that 2" metal and replacing it with a "stepped" pair of strip steel pieces.... so the door will sit flush as opposed to overlapped, and have the lip to close against...

where?

the plexi glove door is out.. that's why the clamp can sit there..

than the green panel is the same composite fiberglass as the black console panel to the left...

oh, I'm thinking you where talking about the ecm board.. my bad.... the only plexi IS the glove door and the electronics box cover out in the engine compartment. everything else is the composite fiberglass painted black..

anyway..... I'm thinking of using these guys for my wire on this rig......

http://www.wirebarn.com/

waytek and del city don't really have what I want, either lack of colors, or too big a minimum.... looking for TXL crosslink in the widest variety of colors I can find... gonna run the thin wall on this build for the most part... some tinned marine in the engine bay...

these guys have the widest color variety.. and will add stripes too..

http://www.awcwire.com/productspec.aspx?id=type-txl

but I didn't look at stripe pricing, cuz the regular pricing was absolutely thru the roof unfortunately.... :eek1: :eek1: :doah:

if I'm desperate to run another color, maybe pick that one or 2 up.. but that wire barn sells ANY foot amount at reasonable prices... and each size has 8 colors... that should be ok...

couple pieces of strip steel, a few holes and some plug welds...

now it flush mounts with a lip to close against..

tomorrow I need to fit the 2 latches up.. they're pretty trick.. that may be a bit more metal work too...

than a few more glass projects... need to do the lip gig on the console wall and build that rightside wall.. but that stuff should be pretty easy... getting there, plodding thru it.. :haha:

thanks Mike.. :D

trying to warm up the garage right now to get back on it... got 6"s of snow this morn.. thankfully the bandsaw for the Lab is coming wed, not today...

the metal work was all the hard part... got a few minor details to work thru with the latching, but it should all work pretty sweet when done...

basically you slide the piece in right next to the A-pillar tube, hook it in the bottom, push it up to the flange and slide it a 1/4" to the left to lock it in.. close the latches... I'll do a vid of the procedure when done...

it's just gonna be too vital an area to not protect from some klutsy, stretching Timberlands... :haha:

Once again I am amazed by your attention to detail, I think this will be much better.

It's funny I thought the first way would be fine but you go and do this and it just feels so much better to know it's all flushed out. That "little" detail just reinforces how much commitment it takes to do a project on this scale.

Sick build quality!!

yes, very clean what you did with the strip metal :waytogo:

I stand corrected, my copper basecoat is...

wait for it.....

$575 a gallon! :eek1: :doah: :eek1:

I was in getting primer, thinner and such and decided to pick up a pint for the dash and asked...

that's gonna hurt when I go to paint the rest of it next fall...

decided to bring this panel and all this interior work thru paint so it's done for when I roll Al's next week on the floor..... should have an update morrow...

Holly Crap! I was complaining about 33 bucks a gallon for house paint. :haha:

considering Mutt's Nason is about $125 a gal with hardener and the K5 is about a grand when you factory in a gal of clear, hardener and reducer, it's painful... :doah: :haha:

I can't imagine what they get for Glasurit these days... :eek1:

I thought it was the perfect latch for this app... dam things ain't cheap... like $16 a piece.. :doah: but it really wanted 2...
