'87 Suburban Build "munepit" I'm Back! Missed all you guys!

just saw your other thread. I think those will work out nicely for you. should be able to keep your current shocks too!

Thanks, I want those 5150s.

Here is what I'm working on.

I grabbed these off a 2wd DRW Ford.

They are bolted on, and there is a couple different kinds. I got the stamped steel ones:

I took the afternoon off to get some work done. Its not easy with the tools I have. It sure would be nice to have a drill press. I have two out of Four bolts done on one side. I sure wish I had more time to work on this. The wife, kid, work and holiday shopping aren't helping.

It doesn't look like they are belveled and grinded the same, but they do match and look pretty good for my skill level and available tools.( can't wait till Christmas).

I have a 4x4 5/8 plate going on the back of the frame. It will be fun drilling those holes. Then I will paint it flat black like everything else. Ok, back to work.

Crap, I just noticed this. I must have crushed it jumping. It only has 20 miles on it. I need bump stops.

LOL man that kind of sucks! Oh well, it should be easy to get off, eh?

Nice work on the shock mounts, can't wait to see that all finished up.

Here is a pic of my shop tools! This is what I'm workin with! I need tools!!

IMG_20101208_204442.jpg

Pretty comical!! I know what your going to say. "Go buy some tools"!

I will tell ya, its hard drillin a bunch of holes 1/2" without a drillpress. I need one! I wish I lived next door to a few members here!!

Haha, try drilling 5/8" holes in steel plate with a 3/8" Black & Decker single speed drill...

It goes slower than my other single speed drill at least. And by single speed, I mean you pull the trigger, it's "on", no variable slow speed at all!

You tend to hear a lot of "Ahhh! My Hand!" when I'm drilling LOL!

Well, I finished the upper shock towers. I dont know how long I will use these, As I can see I will need more travel. There is about 6" up and down. I need more than that. I just need to get the bottoms welded on.

Tom came over and timed the motor for me. The bolt was loose that holds the dist. tight. That took care of code 43. Now im getting a code 42.:dunno: I changed the electronic spark timing circuit and reset the ECU and still throws the code. Crap! This sucks.

Look what just showed up in the mail!! I love those DIY4x stickers!!!! Nice work Kert! Thanks!!!

I didnt catch the problem? Was the truck running like s$!t? I've been chasing a TBI problem for months now w no luck. I started replacing the cheep stuff and now I'm at the fuel pump, injector phase....

yep, losing power and throwing code 43. He set the timing to 0* and it was running good. Then it just started the code 42. Now I fighting that. Hope you fix yours soon. I also hope to fix that damm code 42. I need to buy an ohm meter. I will do that today. Good luck.

I starting to get pissed now. It was throwing a code 42, so I put in a new ignition module. Took it for a ride, and no power. Then the damm check engine came on. Now, again code 43. Crap. I did notice a small ground wire on the back of the head that there is a small piece of copper showing in the middle of the wire. It is attatched and otherwise looks fine. I wonder if that's the problem. The knock sensor is a few months old and looks good. I don't know WTF is going on. I need to fix this soon. Back to the drawing board.

TBI SB, correct? A little off topic for a second, what headders are those? I'm really chasin my tale on a f'd up running 454 right now, it seems like these TBI engines are great untill something goes wrong, then you have a whole list of options of where to look first. I'm still not really clear on what initially effects the driveability ( map, coolent temp, iac, o2......) of the truck as opposed to what throws a code but dosen't effect the driveability? My truck slowly started fuc!ing up over time, at the very initial symptom "bogging down under load and intake pop" I replaced the FF which was plugged and it came out of it 90%. I should have gone w the fuel system theory, check FP and then the sock filter in the tank, that route you know... The injector pattern looks ok, I wouldn't say great..Any ways, It really pays to know the function of the system and how the ecm processes the input...I've also heard of guys running 4-5 degrees advance on 350s. I read a thread on pirate that this guys truck would idle fine and run ok except when under load, turns out the timing chain was loose.. In the beginning of this thread looks like you had a relitively new or rebuilt engine? Has the truck slowly been loosing power or was this condition all of a sudden?

It was all happened quick. The motor is newly rebuilt. All new parts. It has around 500 miles on it. All new sensors and modules, Not the wiring though. I bet thats where the problem is, the wires. I will get you the part number for the headers. It is a TBI 355SB. New fuel pump and filter also.
I have heard of people advanving the timing, But I will not do that. Mine is at 0*. Thanks!

I got a new custom made ECU from DaveW(a member here). He deleted the code 43 and now it runs soo much better. Thanks again Dave! I'm back on the road now and can continue beating, building and beating on it!!!

I took the first road trip in the Burb this weekend in 12yrs. It went well with no problems. I had three people and to big labs and a bunch of luggage. We used every square inch of space. My father took the Land Cruiser with 8 people. I had all the supplies. It was a great trip. I'm glad I got the new computer one day before leaving. It worked great!

It sure does feel good knowing I can drive it a few hrs each way. There is one problem though. And a big one. Swaying, big time. Like almost getting seasick. I know I don't have a swaybar, but damm! Sometimes it sways like a boat going slow through a wake comming up to dock. It didn't do it before. I might have a blown shock from the tuff truck and I am missing one out back(still have 3 out of 4). I am going to buy all new shocks and see if that works.

Question: since I'm going hydro assist, is it doable to do hydro assist and the old push/pull steering? Then I could run a swaybar and a quick disconnect. Then I would have the best of both worlds, street and trail.

I don't see why not. You're just going to your tierod that goes across the front right? I see it a lot on these mud trucks around Azusa Canyon. They are running the huge tires, but don't need crossover.
