'87 Suburban Build "munepit" I'm Back! Missed all you guys!

Hey Jeff, I would put the 56s in AS IS and see if you like it. Not sure how well they'll flex but I can tell you what I've done to mine.

In your picture. Start at the leaf with the brackets attached to it. I removed the two leafs above that one. These two are the closest in length, so I figured I'd start by taking those two out. ( I don't know why, just did) Well, the truck looks great but the springs are close to flat and the truck is REALLY soft. I don't think they would hold up your Sub. I'm not sure which leaf to put back in the pack, but one of them will. It's too soft for a "do it all" truck.

I would also have issues getting under that truck with those jack stands, its actually the first thing I thought of.

I think moving the gas tank is a novel idea, but the frame is the thing that is lower in the back. Do you have a skid plate on the tank, you would have to move that too. Even after you did all that work your leaf springs are still going to be hanging down there.

I'm sure it can be done I would just cut out the rivets make some two inch spacers and bolt them back in. Then build braces and stuff, although a spacer all the way around would be easiest That being said, its two inches if that and the frame leaf springs are all still going to be down there.

Wtf is wrong with us, Jeff...? :haha:

At least you have dollys to move the axle around. I used a floor jack on each brake disk. What are you doing to yours?

That's an old pic, when I was swapping in my 14b... :D

Yea.... $5.99 furniture dolly's, from HF.... Priceless. :thumb:
I used to SLAM the axle onto the dolly's, and they're still good today!
:woot:

My welder is currently rolling on one, atm...

So i trying to shave my 14 bolt and have a question. If i wanted a flat bottom, I would know i would have a 13 bolt. But it looks like i might end up with only 11 bolts. This is a huge lip. If i were to not shave enought to keep all my bolts, I would only gain 1/2" and would still have a lip. Am i missing something here?

Thanks.

To keep the bottom bolt and shave it, I would only gain 1/2". Is this right?

Mine is shaved to pretty much the housing. Yes you will still have a lip but it should be almost even with the bottom of the housing.

Ok thanks.

Guess its a good time to change the axle seal since this is the first time seeing this leak.
Good times!!!

Damm. So your saying to leave the bottom bolt. Thats what Kert at diy4x told me also. Since thats the case, theres not much to shave off.

What was your solution? Would you do it again like that?

I really dont see the need to go as far as you plan on cutting the 14b. Most just take down the lip that grabs everything. All fullsize guys i know just cut that off. I have mine shaved, not cut, and I do rarely get hung up but nothing that your 1/2" will help much of. Most the time you can just power through when caught. Just think youre doing more work then needed. My .2,,,great build
Best pic I can show of mine

Just shave it down right for the bolts and smooth it into the housing. It's not so much the hanging down as it is the abrupt ledge that hangs down. Making it a nice smooth bottom helps a ton.

From your pic, thats what i want to do. I dont want to get all crazy on it. But from my measurements it looks like i can shave a half inch without getting to the threaded 14th hole.

Thanks for posting the pics fellas.

Thanks guys. I know its lame of me asking since there is so many shaved ones out there. And i have been looking online for awhile now. But when it comes down to doing it i was hesitant.

Thats how im going to do mine. I wanted to do it tonight, but i might as well wait for my cover from Ruffstuff to show up.

Again, thanks!

Hmmm, looking for shaved ones online, I'd love to see what your search history brings up.:haha:...

Hindsight 20/20 I would not shave the bolt off, I did, and not enough material to keep it from leaking. Had a new cover built and everything really need to drill and tap housing and add another bolt. Just shave off the lip and call it good.
