88 c30 2wd to 4wd SAS *NEW TELLICO WHEELING PICS!

yeah, i'm still making progress, it's slowed a bit. Busy week this past week that why no update. had finals and busy week at work, plus girlfreind's birthday and a 4 wheeling trip on saturday (I mostly spotted) so i made slow progress. basically i finished putting the brakes together, plumbing the tranny lines, and started working out shock mounts. Its sitting on 4 tires now (no jack stands) and the rear d-shaft is finished, painted and installed.

I have to go pick up heims for the steering tomorrow, and get 2 u bolts made (old ones stripped some threads) and its rolling out of the garage under its own power. I made the deal on the 38 swampers, now i just have to find some 15" 8 luggers around here for cheap and ill be up on big tires. :D I have some new pics, ill get them up soon.

we mounted my buddy's 40" MTR on the fron tthe other night, just to see what kind of clearance i had. It fit, and looked good  , but i wouldnt have been able to turn at all. It would have gotten seriously into the fender/cab. Im thinking i need a zero rate in the front to move the axle foward a bit, and then i'll need a bit of trimming. but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

got some stuff done this past weekend. Got the rear shocks mounted, (13" travel deutch techs) i think ill redo the mounts sometime in the future as they arent exactly what i'd like, but they'll do for now. also finished plumbing the brakes, (fronts needed some extensions, the hard line outputs are higher on 2wd's than 4wd's) and bled them all. finished some odds and ends as far as drilling and bolting some stuff that I had put off before, and I finished hooking up the lines to the tranny cooler.

Important Things still to do:

1) finish the ghettto steering.
2) figure out a way to shift the tranny. (i have a pending bid on e-bay for a shifter and cable)
3)get studs out of exhaust manifolds, and re do exhaust.(single 3" with flowmaster super 40 I have)
4) Get it out of the garage by sat am.

Not so pressing things still to do:
5)Cut, Modify, and remount Bed.
6) find/buy some 15x10 8 luggers to mount up the 38's
7)mount the mustang buckets
8)zero rates front and rear to strech wheelbase a little more.

I have been taking pictures, I swear, ive just been really bad at getting them on the net. I'll do my best to get pics up in the next few days. :D

dude he posted again. we all kind of got the idea it was dead or you were. keep us up to date and post up somemore.:D

ha ha, Dead? Not me! just busy! Ill keep posting, it's reached a state now where the updates will have far less visual "impact", but i'll keep posting anyway.

Ya i was wondering where you went. Sounds like you got a lot to do. Are you still going with the z- link suspension. I thought if you went cross over with a dana 44/10b you can still use your drag link, just not the steering arm? But i am not 100 percent sure on this but, if you can then i would just do the cross over until you get your 60, then sell the knuckles and steering arm from your ten bolt.

Finally got a bunch of pics on the pc today, dont have time to upload them right now (stupid f'ing engagement party this afternoon) but i'll get them up late tonight or tomorrow a.m.

Got the steering"done", still have to work it a little, you'll see more in the pics later, it steers right way better that it does left, but it steers. got the 2 rear shocks on in their long term temporary position. pulled it out of the garage under its own power this morning, somoeone needed my bay, it was loud (straight manifolds, no exhaust) but it went.

Pics coming later.

Got Flex?
gmcbuild37.jpg

rear springs work nicely....
gmcbuild36.jpg

looks like i set up the rear shackle angle just about right...
gmcbuild38.jpg

i'm 5'11 or so. front hub is right behind the small of my back, about 4' or so from the floor.
I think the setup has more flex to go, but at this point, with no weight on the back, the back left tire started lifting.

that night we test fitted my buddy's 40" MTR just to see...(kinda dark, sorry)
gmcbuild41.jpg

doesn't stick out TOO far..
gmcbuild43.jpg

You can see here that 1) i need to trim the fenders badly, and
2) I need to get some zero rates and move the axle foward. I
Probably should have setup the front springs starting from the
front of the truck, but I didnt, and this is the result. oh well.

Steering pics: you can see that i used the original center link from the IFS
steering, i just flipped it around so it was offset to the front. Pitman arm/idler
arm remain unchanged. I used the factory tie rod ends on either end of the
draglink. (inner tre at the centerlink, outer at the tie rod) the tube is an 85
chevy tierod, cut to length and bent. I took the IFS adjuster sleeves and
ground them into a taper at one end and hammered them into the tube
2" or so, and then welded away.
gmcbuild44.jpg

here you can see the lower end, it turns out that the outer tre from the IFS
fits the taper of the steering stabilizer hole. I had to stack a few washers on
the nut side, cause this tre has a longer shank and the threads dont go all
the way down.
gmcbuild45.jpg

It steers tothe right better than to the left, i think if i flip it around so the lower end goes on from the front it will help, and then with some adjustment to the draglink i think i can get most of the bugs ironed out.

New Updates

Well i got back in gear on this thing. now has a tapered flatbed framed out on the rear, and the mustang seats are being mounted in place of the bench. I secured a set of 1 tons, (woo hoo) locked 14 and posi 60, because my rear 14sf was kinda wasted. to mount them i ordered a Bluetorch steering arm and spring plates, Man are these things HUGE. I also ordered a winters sidewinder shifter for the 700r4 (ArtCarr type). Nice. While i was waiting on all that stuff to get here i got a set of 56" rears and pulled them apart to pull some leaves. Putting these up front should clear some firewall space for the tires. I have an unused 3" Flowmaster super 40 from another project so I have to construct the exhaust to work with that.

Hopefully I have all this finished by the 16th, because on the 17th we are leaving for tellico. I want my truck to go.

Pics to follow.

one big problem to look out for. the 14ff will be vary close to the springs if you still run the big drum brakes. i ran in to this before i found bad axle spindle and junked that axle. swaped to a van 14ff and had better clearence and look.

yeah, the 14ff will be tight to the backing plate, but no more than my 14sf. i Do eventually want to go to a van 14ff, but this will do for now, It will still work, after all the 14ff was factory on the hd 1 tons still from 88-98.....

had a serious work day yesterday, got the front axle out, swapped 52"s for 56's, put the 60 in, mounted the BTF steering arm, mounted a set of loaner 42's on some rims and put 2 of them on the front. good day. massive trimming is needed on the fenders and engine crossmember, but im feeling good about my chances of being done by friday.

well, got the truck together enough to get it to tellico. had a blast, and Identified some weak spots. the tranny crossmember did not hold up and led to a few other problems (including a minor atf fire and some electrical shorts)

over all, the truck worked pretty well, felt very stable. It needs an inch or 2 more lift in the front, as the front rear likes to make contact with the motor x member, and tires still got the fenders a little, (im gonna put some leaves back in the 56's)

It also needs more weght in the back. i didnt have time to put a deck down on the flatbed, so all that was back there was a tire and a battery. With more weight in the rear i feel like i would have taken advantage of the rear flex this thing is capable of, instead of lifting tires. I also have to do something about the axle wrap with the 63's . on lower 2 it wrapped so much the driveshaft bound and got spit out, tearing through both ujoint straps. well, live and learn i guess.

ill get pics as soon as i get the photo disc back from my buddy.

new pics

new pics from tellico:

Here she sits after we unloaded on the first day. looks pretty good imho. :p:

here is a pic from the first day of wheeling, illustrating the lifting tire effect. more weight in the rear (ie flatbed deck, toolbox, and fullsize spare) would help this, the springs will go further.

Poser flex pic on ramp at the camp. It went a little further than this.

Heres a pic from the Rock garden on lower 2, Despite the problems the truck worked very well, it felt very stable.

Heres an action shot from right before the driveshaft let go, i guess i was getting on it pretty hard.

this pic pretty much sums up the ride home that night. we stopped 4 times. the last time it caught on fire.
