88 Suburban - The "Stuburban"

Axle is installed. Set it at full bump to prep for the bump stops. Clearances are tight is some spots, but no issues...yet.

Here's the axle rebuild video.

Started on the bump stops today. Got the passenger side bracket made.
When I made the second set of radius arms brackets, I had to cut the factory spring perch down for hardware clearance. Since the perch was my planned bump pad, the bump stop on that side sits 1" lower. The engine cross member keeps me from wrapping the bracket around the frame on the rear of the bump stop like I did on the front.
I used 1/4" plate to make the bracket.

Found your YouTube channel. Nice videos!
Thanks! Glad you enjoy them.

That's awesome. Congrats. Alot of giys from Illinois on there, getting me all misty eyed.
Thank you. I didn't make the final cut though; which isn't a bad thing. The original plan was to be done by April....you see how that's going.

As for some updates...

Removed the rest of the floor board in the rear. The original plan was to build a cantilever system; however, due to already passing the initial time frame, we're sticking with a traditional setup.

Made some shock hoops and added a cross member in the frame. Relax, they'll be supported by the cage.

Sits 4" too high in the rear since there's no weight. I feel it looked way cooler at full bump.

Got the rear bumps tacked in place.

Picked up a stock crossover from a tahoe to use the y-pipe. Ditched the dual pipes to go back to single. I'll finish the rest of the exhaust once the trans cross member is in.

Cut apart the steering shaft to make a triple joint shaft. Used two 3/4" round u-joints. I cut the stock joint that attaches to the column and made it an extension off the 3/4" joint. It allowed me to clear the shock tower and attach it to the column easily.

The 205 I have has the small input bearing so I'll have to get the case bored.

Updates since the last update.

Got the case bored at a local shop. Painted it and assembled.

What's the plan for bolting the trans crossmember to the frame flange since you boxed it in already?

What's the plan for bolting the trans crossmember to the frame flange since you boxed it in already?

I drilled holes and put bolts down through the frame. I'm thinking of cutting a small opening near each bolt to fit a wrench in there.
My original plan was to have tabs on the box plates and use a bushing on the ends. After getting the case mounted and seeing where the exhaust would run, plans changed.

Well, I see none of my pictures work anymore.

Built seat rails to mount the Celica seats and keep the sliders. Probably would have been easier if it didn't originally have a bench.

I thought ahead on this one... no phone books or blocks of wood for me. The driver's seat sits 3" higher than the passenger's seat.

Went back to the dove nose. I cut the frame of the fenders out and made different relief cuts this time so they wouldn't buckle.

The shakedown run brought a few issues to light.
I didn't seal the shifter plate on the magnum box... oops (fixed)
The front bump stops are too long in their current position. (shortened all four by making spacers)
The rear tires rub the springs about an inch before full articulation. (plan on 14b srw hubs and adjust bumps)
The valve seals were definitely bad enough to require changing. (replaced)
Lastly... I need bigger tires.

Had to put some headlights on so I could drive it to work a few times to see how it did. Pulled the pods off the wrecked truck I picked up.

A few days after the shakedown, one of the tires decided to fall apart.
44083341_2323908204304065_5981395103946637312_n.jpg

To make tire changes a little faster I cut down all but four of the studs.

Then tried running over a grand marquis... the suburban is a bit too wide. lol

Part of getting all this done quickly was to be ready for the Chile Challenge. The week before the event, it started having fueling issues. Couldn't get above 60 and the more I drove, the worse it got. Changed the filter and cleaned the injectors and got a re-tuned...better, but still not good enough to drive 3 hours on the highway.
43951562_2323908500970702_7880587976760098816_n.jpg

Made it almost all the way through the first trail with no issues. Bent the tie rod, then blew a tire (just so happened to be the spare), and went back to running so bad I couldn't go over 20mph.
This picture accurately shows how much I need bigger tires.

Due to frustration, I let her sit for a few weeks before doing anything... I've also been waiting on some parts and...

BIGGER TIRES!!!!

Since the tires are bigger, I needed to make sure I got the hubs out of the way. These are the Dana70HD drw hubs.
