88 Suburban - The "Stuburban"

It was 2 months from the time I ordered. Ordered 9/13, received 11/13.
I’m told it’s partially due to the fact they’re 16.5. Checking on the status was an interesting experience.

I had to go back and cut off pretty much everything on the front to switch to high steer. The axle side panhard bracket I made stuck out too far to allow room for the tie rod. Ordered some brackets and steering kit from Barnes to get everything situated.

I also lined up the panhard-drag link a little better this time.

After swapping the rear hubs out, I got the weld on disk brackets from Barnes to get the brakes situated.

Went on a short test drive to check clearances.

Went out the next day to do some snow wheeling. I started having issues with my throttle actuator due to the cold. Routed the coolant lines back to it and just went down the road to play in the field.
After all the work on the front, I wanted to test it out.

Front held up fantastic.
The rear on the other hand...

We disassembled the rear, took the parts home and picked up the rest later that evening.

Looks like that single tube that runs up over the pumpkin for the upper link mounts ripped off the axle?

It is a single tube set up up. His post on IG said the tube tore but the welds held up.

Yes, the tube broke 1-2” above the axle.

I’ve had plans to build it stronger, but with the recent changes and upgrades, I spaced it. I even forgot to put the left rear bump stop in before this happened. Got it driving again the day before and was a bit excited. It’s a shitty way to learn, but you could say I fully understand the lesson now.

After looking at it closer out from under the rig, both sides broke above the welds, but the right side did break a weld. My guess is when the pinion rotated up, it broke at the back and kind of peeled away. I’ll have to get a picture of it, looks weird to me.

That's what I saw on IG too. Looks like the pinion snapped too?
Yes, the end of the pinion was still inside the yoke, attached to the driveshaft. I was a little impressed by that.

The top of the case took a little damage, but nothing serious.
Due to the weather and my luck the past few days, I’m not touching anything until it warms up a bit. I’m taking a hiatus from the garage.

The damage I know of at the moment;
Bent both shock shafts
Broke both rod ends
Broken pinion
Broken brake lines
Ruptured fuel tank
Some body and tire damage, nothing serious.

Ouch. That’s a pretty good list. Probably not too many Suburbans hitting sweet jumps.

Soooooooo this means no new tow rig and no Wyoming snow wheeling in the near future?

Unless I offload a few other projects, probably not.
I need to find a spot to do the engine swap on the tow truck, but that still only helps one of us.

If it was 10 years ago I could hook you up with a couple buddies from Albuquerque that would jump right in and help you knock out your engine swap. Assuming that’s where you are anyway... but I haven’t heard from those guys in years. So basically what I’m saying is I got nothin. Sorry man.
If it means anything to you, I had a similar failure in Moab one year that cut my wheeling short and broke a bunch of expensive stuff. Same deal... one of those things I planned on doing but it slipped through the cracks and cost me a buncha time and money.
