I'm sort of guessing on the year range there, as I'm not sure how specific my question is to the year... Anyway:

How many of you all have a diode jumping this plug?

That's a purple wire with a white stripe, and a white wire. It's located just near the fuse block under the dash. The numbers on my diode are:

8916
5051-300

That's a photo of "85 Jimmy's" truck. I have the same thing. Anyone else? Anyone know what's up with it?

My '90 has the same thing, but the plug is taped to a larger wire and the diode is taped over too. My '83 pick-up doesn't have it, and I have no idea what it's for.

I will look on my 89 and my 91 later when I get to them, but I am pretty sure it's stock, wether it was added at production or right after, I don't know, but I can look at my repair manuals from my 90 and check the service bulletins I have.

I'm at work now and can't find anything definite. The only thing that I could find that would be a possability is a service bulletin on the ABS diode. But none of the wiring diagrams that I can find show it, or a connector with 2 wires that are purple/white and white.

Also, the more I look at that picture the more it looks like the white tracer on the purple wire is just a part of the white wire, like where the split the 2 wires apart to put them in the plug. The trucks at home, so I can't go see if that's the case or not until later.

I have a '90 and it has the plug, but no diode. I cut out the dash to add one of Kurt's comp dashes, and right now there's just a nest of wires hanging over the steering column. I just went out to the garage and looked at it. The wires in mine are as follows:

Position A: Purple
Position B: Purple/Black
Position C: Purple/White
Position D: Tan/White
Position E: Tan/Black
Position F: Tan/White

If anyone can shed any light on what this is, I'm all ears. If I don't need it, it's gone.

Here's a pic of my mystery plug. There's a small circuit board inside of it once you pop that cap open on the end.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I think I'll get a nice fatty piece of heat shrink tube and put that on there instead of the wonky duct tape that the PO (or whomever) used.
