'89 Burb - Izzy got heads

You'll need different u-bolts for the rear. What are your plans with this Suburban?

Martin

Dedicated camping/exploring rig that I will probably end up driving to work a lot.
I think it has 3.73 gearing so I'm thinking I should stay with my 33's, that should keep me from doing too many stupid things.

I would love to build it strong enough to play in some rocks with tons and 37's but that's way in the future, if at all. It's too clean to thrash and now (due the banks history and me being a diesel enthusiast) has a special place in my heart.

I would do a shackle flip on the rear, and ditch the blocks.

Martin

I would too. That was the original plan and why I bought the lift with the block. Going to spend my tiny bit of money on getting it running first. When the time comes, 4" flip or 2.5" with longer shackles?

To give you a little image here is my 1/2 burb with 2.5 front springs and a 2.5 rear flip, running 32ish tires (17 inch rims)...................

I like the 2.5 to 3 inch lifts with 32 to 33 tires. Just really make the burbs stand out without going "big". Remember, the rear axle is a little bigger on your 3/4 so you'll probably see 1/2 to 1 inch from that.

Years ago I had a 79 suburban with a 454/400 and a 60/corp 14 combo. I put skyjacker all spring lift 2.5 softride ride in front and 56" 4 inch soft rides in rear. The truck rode beatiful and with no weight in back had a @1 inch rake. unfortunately no pics. I believe the 60 in front is was made it look correct because of the extra height. Just my opinion. Oh and I love the story and the truck!

Nice! Thanks!

I understand that Rough Country lives up to its namesake in ride quality but I'm hoping that the heavy diesel will help smooth it out. And since I need new U-bolts for the rear I'm looking at the shackle flips.

ORD or DIY4x

If ORD, 4" or 2.5" with extended shackle.

If DIY4x, should I replace the stock shackles?

They all seem to cost about the same so I guess its a matter of personal preference.

Also, my cousin is doing me a favor and taking a set of heads I got with the burb down to his machine shop guy in Clovis to see if they can be repaired. Fingers crossed.:dunno:

I would do the 2.5. You're aiming for 4" lift right? Well typically with the shackle flip (the 4") people end up using a zero rate also in order to move the axle back an inch because the wheel no longer sits centered in the wheel opening. Plus, sometimes they have to shim to get the pinion angle corrected. That puts you at 5+" lift. With the 2.5, you could run an extended shackle, and zero rate/shim and still end up at 4" overall.

I prefer the DIY4X shackle flip. Makes it easier/cheaper to adjust shackle length.

Yeah I wanted tuff country from the beginning but was on a serious budget when I got the K5. Still on a strict budget now so since I already have the RC's gonna have to roll with them. I don't mind a stiff ride. If I do spend more money on suspension it going to be a 2.5" ord flip with a zero rate and then "shackles to fit" from DIY4X (theoretically). Gotta get it running first. Hope to have the heads dropped off at the shop today.

i think I might try and sell my 96 Camry for parts $. :D

Izzy you ROCK:saweet: ya lucky bastid :waytogo:

Keep the dissle, I regret pulling my 6.2 out and that 6.5 is a helluva upgrade!

Haha, thanks! Yeah, its staying diesel for sure. Plus once I showed my wife the old registration slips, she was like "Well now you HAVE to keep it diesel."

Its pretty much my Holy Grail.

I've got a Rough Country 4" lift on my Sub with rear blocks and I must warn you, the rear end sits really low with a 4" block. A Rough Country 4" lift sits more like a 5" lift so the 4" block is going to be short. I bought a 5" block to fix it and it still sits arse low. I've got brand new R.C. springs for the rear that I'm throwing on at the end of the month when I'm on vacation because I hate the saggy arse look.

That's what I've heard about rough country. I'm hoping my heavy Diesel engine will help a little bit. I do plan to shackle flip the rear so maybe I can fix the saggy arse situation then.

Well, I got the heads I had checked out. They are a no-go. Not too surprised but still a bummer. Looks like I'm in the market for a new set of heads. SSDiesel Supply here I come... soon...

Small update

Well I sold the wheels and tires off the K5 to my brother in law. As soon as the money clears SSDiesel Supply will be my new best friend. ARP Studs, heads and gasket set coming soon.
