89 K5 - Recon's 1 Ton Blazer

Brakes can be a pain,Sorry it`s always the little sh#t that takes the fun out of it.

It really is taking the fun out of it, I was motivated for a while because this is the last thing to do so I can drive it, but it is frustrating as all hell.

Its in Waco right ? That truely adds to the suck.

You trailered it there - Not gonna/dont wanna/aint gonna trailer back right ?

Hmm.

No, I went home for some much needed vacation time and I've only been back a few days. I have a four day weekend coming up so I plan on messing with it a bit.

brakes

I cant exactly tell by the pics, but it seems like your bleeders are down pretty low on the calipers in the front. That means air can get trapped at the top of the calipers, causing a very mushy pedal with little to no stopping power.

The easy way to get around this is to take the caliper off the rotor and put a 2x4 in the caliper and bleed it with the bleeder facing upwards, this will let the air escape resulting in a firm pedal.:thumb:

Well, we went to Barnwell Mountain outside of Gilmer in east Texas for our clubs annual "Turkey Crawl." Everything was going awesome on my truck all day long, only had to be winched one time due to lack of front locker and some difficult steps. Damn near sundown on Saturday things were winding down and we were going to do a couple of trails on our way back to camp so we could fry up some turkey.

About 100 yards in was a ledge with some rocks pushing up high on the right side of the trail, I went to the right to drop the p-side into a nice hole but as I was trying to turn left after I dropped in it wasn't responding very well. I wasn't sure what was going on, I thought it was just my lack of crossover that had been causing me turning issues all day long while twisted up.

The drag ling decided to let go as my right front went up the rock as I was still trying to turn left. Before I realized that i needed to stop because something was screwed I started leaning hard and then it just fell over. No front flex with Pro-Comp 4" lift springs don't help. When the ball pulls out of the socket on the drag link attached to the pitman arm makes a tough situation really bad.

The Jeeps that were following me were able to tie together and then with creative placement of snatch blocks the Blazer was fairly easy to get back on all fours. My buddies "Big Orange" crew cab 80's monster on 42's with almost no lift was able to start pulling me out before we tried something easy.

We hammered the ball back into the socket on the drag link end, put a few aircraft zip tie's on it, and I slowly backed out under my own power and then drove it back to camp. We only had to reset the zip tie's 1 time. As long as I was moving while turning the steering wheel it was pretty similar to regular steering, just mushy.

We towed out there, so we loaded on the trailer on Sunday and drove back to Waco. I went to Autozone that is luckily open until 10 PM on Sunday and they had the short DRE in stock for $40. We fixed it in about 10 minutes, air the tires back up and I drove it an hour the rest of the way to my house. (All my wheeling buddies live in Waco).

All in all I had a great time, and while I intended for crossover to be my next upgrade, I never expected to need it so soon. Steep angles are a joints worst enemy! I drive like a mad man, and bombed some hills hard core because it was the only way to get up them with no front locker. I know for sure that my driving style played a part in the break.

I tied everything down in the interior, and everything stayed put. My CO2 tank, 50 lb tool bag, and "wheeling box" never moved an inch. My cooler dumped all its water on me, but stayed in the passenger footwell, tied down. My beverage stayed in my console cup holder and poured all over my leg.

Well lets see the carnage!

I've been having a bad case of "Oh my god I have to crap right now!" so I had the TP in/on my center console. It went out the window and rolled down the hill when I went over. It was pretty funny to everyone because they thought it was my distress signal when they looked up the hill to see my progress down.
