that is what the owner told me. What kind of six it is? Good motor or abad one? I didnt know it would come with a v6 in 89. Looking at this truck for my cosin.

thx

Not likely, the standard engine in 89 was the 350. Diesel was the only option I know of.

86 back was the straight 6.

If it is an s-10 it should have a 2.5, a 2.8, or a 4.3. If it is a 4.3 and the rig is in good shape, buy it. the 4.3 is a Damn good little motor. Also the biggest v6 chevy has. I swore i would never own a v6 (and probably never will) but if i was going to buy one it would be the 4.3. Powerwise, a 305 and a 4.3 are almost identical. I was suprised how much pick up those things have.... 250 ft lbs of tq and 185 hp. In a 4000 lb rig that motor is a little beast. A 4.3 is a 350 with 2 cylinders cut off.

you forgot the 3.4L that came between the 2.8 and the 4.3.

And if you think the 4.3L is the biggest V6 Chevy has, you've never seen an old C60(or similar sized truck).

the c-60 was a gmc motor. that was when thay were still split up as diffrent divisions. but one good motor. and it was a 305 cid if i recall.

Actually, the 2.8 became the 3.1 became the 3.4

I meant in 89.... they offered a 2.5, a 2.8, and a 4.3.

didn't realize the 2.5 was a 4(having never talked about or seen one until 1 hr ago).

the 4.3 is a good motor but nothing compared to todays v6's and straight 5's. the canyons, trailblazers, yota's, pathfinders, etc put it to shame.

I think that it had a nickname like "iron duke" or something. At the time I had a great mechanic who always called it something like that. Tough engine.

My bro once ran his 4.3 with less than 1 qt of oil for 1 day and it never even got hot... that was after it had been pinned through mud pits, singin up hills, and doubling as a rally motor for 4 years in his jimmy. I've never seen a rig stand up to that much abuse... oh yeah, i almost forgot... it was rolled too after sliding into a tree. I have more respect for v6's in general after seeing one take that kind of punishment and maintain respectable power.

it(the four banger 2.5) was called the iron duke.

i was a s10 guy for a while and thats why i know...i had a tbi 87 that ran ok but vibrated all kinds of stuff loose and got the same mileage as my 91 k5 gets.

For real info:
2.8 became 3.1 and 3.4 is a different block altogether. 3.4 shares all exterior features of a 2.8 except for a clutch pedal boss, and the block on the 3.4 is beefier internally.

Been there done that 2.8 to 3.4 swap in an s10. basically 3.4 is a bored and stroked 2.8 with stronger casting.

and there never was a factory 3.4l s10!

But the 3.1 and 3.4 were never used in the S-10's, so it's kind of a moot point............

Fellas around here enter S10's in tough truck comp. They take all kind of abuse, jump after jump. We were up in a field and a guy jumped a 6-7 feet deep, 10 feet wide ditch in one(4.3). The body almost came off the frame. It died so we lifted body up fixed the sending unit wires and away it went again. They are tough little rigs.
