'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
I have 5-6 stock front shafts of various lengths in good shape, if one of those will help to get you back up and running, pay for shipping and it is yours.

I like it... Every time one of you guys post up a new crew cab build I want to kick myself for selling mine... Excited to watch it come to life...

I own 3 CC’s and want another...more! They are highly addicting!

Why the new shaft? Isn’t that a HAD shaft you have?
I only have an HAD shaft in the rear. (Oh man that sounds bad!) The front was made by a shop down in Denver that @Bent77 and I have both had problems with. The shop that is in my area does really good work but they don't do the 4x4 stuff; at least not custom stuff. I would also say they probably aren't the cheapest guys in the driveshaft business. The way the front shaft was tubed by the other shop is kinda hokey and not easy for them to lengthen. By the time I have it redone I can get a new shaft from Tom Woods. I'm going to go that route because I can still sell my current front shaft; it functions just fine. Also another member here was gracious enough to give me a $100 gift certificate from Tom Woods.

I do still need to call and talk to Tom Woods, I'm just basing my pricing off their website which I'm sure is very general.

Holy cow, that's quite a collection of shafts! I appreciate the offer, but I should have it handled. :waytogo: I've often thought I should keep a collection myself. If for some reason I do need something, I will let you know.

I will have the rear shaft today or tomorrow so I can at least get some road time on the new setup.

@sweetk30 it doesn't look like a diode is going to help. I can only check it in park but it doesn't want to stay in closed loop. I will still test drive it to be 100% certain, but I'm not holding my breath.

Same here. If you need a shaft I have two different HAD front shafts I'm not using, one may work, who knows.

Should be able to take the truck 4l80e & Magnum for their maiden voyage Monday. I ran out of time Saturday night and today is Easter with the family.

I mounted the catch cans for the trans, Magnum, and tcase vents.

The black cans were less than $20 on ebay. I didn't like the filter thing that came with them so I found these ARB filters for $10 to use instead. The silver can was about $25. In hindsight I would have rather done all 3 like the silver one; the black cans are a little larger than I expected.

I finished up a bunch of wiring including the trans temp gauge and the manutronic shift switch for the controller. To be honest I've never soldered much wiring in my automotive work but for some reason I've decided to do more of it. Just yesterday alone I soldered at least half a dozen wires. Works pretty good now that I have a system done.

The other big visual thing I finished was mounting the shifters.

This is kind of a trial mounting. This is where I think I want them, but not sure until I've driven it a little bit. One of the things the factors will be cup holders. I figure out what I did with the cup holders that bolt to the console. As soon as I can find them I can see if they will still work. I know for sure the cup holder mounting will need to be different, but need to make sure it's even doable.

Only things I NEED to do before the trip next weekend is to install the front driveshaft and make a skid plate. In the meantime I can put some miles on the new setup. Only big concern I have is if the TPS issue is going to make the truck undriveable. I have an add-on TPS on order but I'm hoping it can wait until after the trip. Rather not have to do a trash install session to get it done.

Did some test driving and everything seems to working fine. It's one of those things where you are learning the new "normal" for how it all operates. I did have to add some fluid to the NP205. You can see in the picture how much level dropped. There's a lighter red section where the level was.

Took 1/2qt to get it back up. I squirted about 1/3qt more for good measure.

Also bolted in the new front driveshaft that you can just make out in the picture above.

Big thing left to do before the weekend is to make the skid plate. Hopefully knock that out tomorrow.

to heck with that info . . . . :dunno::rotfl:

how was the open/closed loop and tps problem ?

and fyi : everytime i see that t-case i think is mine still on the bench in the shop still .

You were an inspiration. :D

Still won't stay in closed loop. Doesn't seem to be effecting driveability. I ordered a second standalone TPS like would be used for a carburetor setup. We'll see how it goes on the drive home this evening with the jumper wire still in there. I'm hoping it will work good enough and I can hold off on putting the other TPS in until after the trip.

I think the TPS interference would be the biggest problem when it's still learning. I'm lucky in that my Sniper is done with most of the learning. I'm just curios how much it will effect fuel mileage.

Where did the fluid from your tcase go? up into your breather tube/catch can?

Nice job getting it back together, your truck just keeps getting cooler and cooler.

Well, my weekend plans might be thwarted. I'm probably going to have to be a passenger.

Something seems to be wrong with the NP205. After doing a more extensive test drive I found it's making a grinding noice over about 25mph anytime I let off the gas and coast. Accelerating is mostly quiet until I get up to 45mph, then there's constant noise under load or coasting. The sound reminds me of my previous K5 that had a front shaft with no CV, just single 1410's at each end. It would make a similar noise if we were going at a good speed in 4wd and let off the gas.

Nate said what I was describing reminded him of bad ujoints but all the ujoints are new.

That’s sucky.... sorry man. Hope it’s a simple fix for you!
