'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
Well I owe ya a gage then

Good news on the updates
No, I couldn't use that style because of the trans controller TPS being in the way. I had to go the expensive route with a transducer and in cab gauge.

Well that sounds more fun anyway. Hopefully some pics soon?

When things settle down we can do lunch or something

Maybe a trail run. I know things are super busy for ya.

So I'm curious how many miles since you got the unit back, and how well it is tuning in?

Haven't driven it in 2 weeks so nothing to report. Come March we'll have my mom's house taken care of and I should be getting more time with this truck. I'd be surprised if I had much over 100 miles on it.

Is it learning faster with the new ECM than the old one did?

I won't know, I didn't pay attention to how long the first one took. I just drove it.

The saddle tanks have caused me more trouble than anything else. Pinched return line and the fuel pickup being easily uncovered.

Yeah let me know when you get to that point. I can bring mine up for the visual, might make it easier to envision that 31 tank

It worked flawless in Moab last year. I wish I had started with that modification

Still doing good with the Sniper, still struggling with the saddle tanks.

I had been dismissing the K5 tank due to time constraints before the Rubicon trip, but pushing that off until 2020 gives me time this winter to look harder at doing it. 2 out of the last 3 times I've driven the crew cab I almost ran out of gas because the gauge is so far off. I know I have 3 gallons left when fuel pressure drops at every stop light. I'd really rather figure out a better sending unit setup. I'm almost tempted to go to an external pump and tap the bottom of the saddle tanks so I can make a fuel pickup with a suction line to each end of the tank.

I am putting a k5 or suburban tank in the back of the crew cab and leaving the Saddle tanks and transferring to the rear tank

If I remember right, he was planning on having all three tanks in use for maximum fuel capacity. I might be wrong though.

I do like the single 31 gallon tank in mine, but it came that way.:pimp:

And I have been trying to figure out how I can inboard the tanks so they don't get damaged off road and I believe I figured it out.
I just need to outboard the exhaust or stacks since I will be running a turbo diesel :pimp::whistle:

If I do the K5 tank, this is what I'll do as well.

I'm wondering if it will make exhaust routing tricky staying away from the saddle tank and the K5 tank. I'm going to need a smaller muffler because the GIGANTIC muffler I have now won't work with a K5 tank. Too bad they don't make a thrush welded muffler in 3.5".

I would use a 26gal tank which came in the 87 K5 with TBI so you can get them with a baffle tray from the aftermarket. I figure still having the saddle tanks will diminish the need for a 31gal tank. My old K5, the General, had a 26gal tank it was never an issue. The ideal would be a way to shut the saddle tank off when it is empty or if the K5 tank is full. But if I'm already having issues getting correct fuel level, it would be hard to have an accurate switch.

I also figure I can set the system up to where I could swap a hose and electrical connector around and use a saddle tank to feed the motor in case of pump failure in the K5 tank.

I've thought about this too, but I think this is probably why the 90's trucks have more distance between the frame rails.

I got the tanks mocked up and they are clear from the driveshaft but if you articulate and the axle moves sideways more than an inch it could get close to the tanks

I finally installed the mirrors I bought off of @nvrenuf

I really like these mirrors from a visibility standpoint. I can't really put my finger on what it is specifically, but I just feel like a get a better rear view from them. Maybe it's because they ended up in a good location on the door, or it's just the shape of them.

I'm on the fence about the way they look on the truck, but I pretty much forget about them until I'm looking in them so I think they must not bother me that much.

I’ve always liked them on my K5. Actually own two sets of the OEs and one of the Rock Auto knock-offs.

I figured you were going to say there was a major problem found this morning and you can not go.

Dodged that bullet.
