'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
I have a Grant steering wheel and it has at least 2 positions the adapter can be installed. I think that's where I'm off.

Working on putting new pump in the passenger tank and it rattles. The old tbi pump doesn't. Should I be worried?

Well I went ahead and made a parts store run, however that pump made the same noise and it's a different brand. So I went ahead and put the AC Delco pump I was originally questioning in the tank. It runs at the right pressure and it got me home. That's 25 minutes of highway speed with a couple stops.

Figured I should take an easy test run on a trail today. Easy in this case is hauling 500lbs of equipment on one of the hardest trails in northern CO.

The forest service asked the club I'm in to do some work on one of our adopted trails, Kelly Flats. I've posted before about doing a recovery on that trail on an obstacle called Heart Attack Hill. Back in the late 80's the very top of the hill had some concrete work done. It's very steep and eroded badly so the concrete was added to keep it open.

Problem is the very bottom of the concrete gets broken off and giant holes are dug out of the bottom. This can be an issued because many mildly built vehicles can complete the obstacle up to this point but the holes are dug out so much that they nearly swallow 37's. Trying to back down would be extremely dangerous.

Yesterday a group of club members used 24 bags of sacrete to fill it in but only made a start. So we went back up today and added another 25 bags, 80lbs bags. I hauled 45 gallons of water, couple wheel barrows, shovels, and hoses to the top of Heart Attack hill.

Here's a picture from the area we were working and you can see the truck up at the top of the hill.

The dark colored concrete is the new stuff we done, all the rest of it is the original concrete work from the 80's. I can't imagine the number of bags they must have hauled in.

Truck ran good and by the end of the day I was totally comfortable it wasn't going to let me down.

That being said, I think I'm going to have to install a bigger radiator. It was almost a problem today but not quite. However it was also relatively cool today so it will probably be a problem this summer. Cooling was always borderline before with the TBI350 but I had hoped that was due to the condition of the motor.

Mine is a stock four core works fine for me. It is a true four core though.

If I end up ever getting a new one it will be an aluminum one that fits in the same hole.

Yes. Every time I start the truck I realize how much the smoke from the old motor embarrassed me.

I'm thinking I should do the diesel radiator like I had in my K5. I was 6" wider.

I have an aluminum radiator now. I bought one that was similar size to what was in there. I figured I was just having cooling issues because the radiator was crudded up. Now I'm wondering if it's just too small and when I bought the aluminum radiator I should have upsized then.

Things work weird here cuz the altitude

Buy the biggest one you can shove in there
