'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
This weekend I installed a new stock type pan and standard volume pump.

I really like this Moroso pickup.

However I haven't started it yet. Haven't put the oil in yet. I have 3 different dipsticks here; one factory and 2 different aftermarket, and I can't get any of them to work. The factory type tube won't fully insert into the pan. The 2 aftermarket versions I can get the tubes in but the stick won't feed all the way in; pretty sure it's hanging up on the hole in the baffle. I probably spent 2 hours messing around with them, twisting them and bending them different directions. 1 time I had success but couldn't repeat it. I started to worry the stick was going to break off the handle.

My thought now is to just cap the dipstick tube and figure out some sort of slim wire that will feed into the tube to use to check oil level. Down the road, when I'm motivated I'll have to drop the pan and figure out what's going on. I just need to figure out a wire that's slim enough but yet also stiff enough.

Looks like instead of camping this weekend I'm pulling the oil pan off again. 035 welding wire is the thinnest wire I could think of I have access to that's also reasonably rigid and I can't even get that to feed in. There's gotta be something blocking the tube in the pan.

Of course by the time I called Moroso they were closed. Mountain time vs Eastern :doah:

Oh interesting. So just the 4l80 and magnum did it then. I would be surprised if holley did not have a power enrichment setup already in their system. The idea is to just check that its on. Other than that lots of good ideas to work with for now and whittle it down. Cooling issues suck.

4l80-e is a BIG trans and the t-conv on it is about half its weight . then add in the mix of driving threw the aux range box there is more drag .
I was thinking more about this and I probably should reset the Holley EFI and have it relearn the truck now with the "new" transmission and tcase setup.

Just occurred to me what is likely the trouble with the dipstick. I still have the Milodon windage tray that was recommended for the OTHER pan. I'll bet the Moroso pan has the dipstick lined up so that it hits.

Coworker has a boroscope I can borrow tomorrow and I should be able to verify.

Not at the speeds that things turning!

But the sticker is worth 5
Shoot, with the rev's I'm spinning I guess I need one! That last 5 hp might be all I need to get over the hump. :haha:

Is the windage tray the full size screen or just the baffle under the pump?

Found the problem looking down the receptacle for the dipstick tube:

Doesn't show up well in the picture but you can kinda see where I've made the gold iridite finish of the windage tray silver from bumping into it repeatedly.

I looked in through the drain plug first, but it was hard to get the camera lined up where it needed to be. I could see through the hole in the oil pan baffle that it looked like it was blocked.

It's kinda frustrating trying to maneuver the camera. I kept trying to angle the the screen in my hand like that would change my perspective. :haha: Half the time you have to move the camera lead in the opposite direction you want it to go and then you start getting confused about up and down.

At least you know for sure what the problem is.
Yeah, if I hadn't thought of it earlier plus having the camera to verify, I might not have even noticed it.

And for future reference if anyone is looking, Moroso recommends using the factory dipstick for their 20449 oil pan.

There's a dipstick joke somewhere in here I just can't quite put my finger on it? Hmm..

I hate these learning curves A LOT. Sucks you have to pull the pan again.
