'89 R3500 Crew Cab 2wd to 4wd conversion & beyond

Started out with 2wd TBI350 with SM465 to current 4wd with 454, 700r4, NP241
I'm just waiting for everyone to figure out that anything 454 isn't worth its weight in gold.

Man that's a ton of money for an inch bigger fan. :yikes: I'd just run an OE fan, they are 17" aren't they?

I bet you're rarely stopped on the trail with the truck in gear not moving. Subconsciously I always throw to neutral, I would bet you do the same.

Buy private. As in don't go to a boneyard. The junkyard guys won't give them away. But buying a whole truck/suburban that runs would give everything you need to take with the swap vs having to go source it separately.

It's the little crap that adds up in these swaps that gets expensive. One of my knock sensors came in today. $44 for it plus shipping. I'm going to have to get 4 quarts of the nv4500 uber-lube at $40 a bottle now too. By the time I'm done I'm $4000 into it and that don't include the engine.

My buddy used Amsoil since it was a little cheaper with my account.

I was thinking that. Most likely I'd be in park or neutral. Since getting the Magnum with the 454, I have a tendency to let the motor lug more. At the beginning of Moody Hill, it's a long steep climb. I was doing most of it at 1200RPM with just the Magnum in low, trans in 2nd, torque converter locked. I might have to break that habit too since my little idle experiment showed the best cooling around 1500RPM.

When I measured the 2 I have, I think they were around 16.5" which they probably call 17". I would be concerned about the 18" fan hitting the shroud when the truck is twisted up.

It looks like the trans cooler fan not running is my fault. I had it wired in with the radiator cooling fans. When I pulled the relay for the fans I removed, I also killed power to the trans fan.

My employee price is less, but I'm still spending more for a quart than 4 quarts of regular sauce normally runs.

Gotta pay to play I guess.

That's how I roll as well. It helps with the tranny as the TC is locked. I'll bet you may find that even just a slow movement and the motor lugging it will not get as hot as the truck not moving at idle. Taking it out on the trail is the only way to test though.

Sunday is Johnny Park. Easy trail, but I haven't done it before.

Maybe October would be a good month to run Spring Creek. @Bent77 I know is eager to give it a go.

Is it the trails success for finally killing you off?

Years after @miniwally told me I should do it, I finally mounted the steering reservoir to the engine. I cut a bracket using 1/4" thick aluminum.

There's a hose clamp on the hose going to the pump because where I had it before was kinking the hose. I'm using the hose clamp to force it back to round.
