Hi All,

Here is my new 89 Burban. This is my third solid axle Burban. I have been searching for many years for just the right one and when I found this one I could not pass it up. I plan on building it as a Trail/Camping/60%DD rig. I will also use it heavily for hunting Cats in the winter in fresh snowed fire roads:waytogo:. I really want to do this build right and take my time. I also want to do all the mods and work myself to be better prepared on the trails and breakdowns:eek1:. Since this rig is new to me My first order of business is to start with a fresh maintenance. I would love some input on the best products to use. Here is a list of things I want to do first and please let me know if I forgot something or am choosing wrong:D.

89 - 3/4 - 350tbi - TH-400 - NP205 - D44 Open - GM14FF Detroit - 6" - 35" BFG M/T

  1. Oil/Filter (Royal/K&N or Amsoil)
  2. Trans fluid/Filter (Royal or Amsoil)
  3. Air Filter (K&N)
  4. Check Brakes & Longer Lines (If OK will wait for D60 upgrade)
  5. Diff Oil (Royal or Amsoil)
  6. Flush Rad (Maybe New 4core)
  7. XL HD Trans Cooler (In front of Rad)
  8. Engine heater
  9. Grease everything
  10. Double Battery/Optima 1Red&1Yellow (Not sure what kit to use)
  11. New Alternator/Belt (High output for future Winch/Lights/Misc)
  12. Electric Fan (Maybe)
Once these are done I would like to do these things ASAP (month or less). This way I can start getting out on some runs with guys in the Colorado area and maybe a trip to Moab.

  1. ORD Zero rear
  2. ORD shackel flip & 2-3" Springs Rear (tuff county)
  3. Bushwacker Cut-Out-Flares
  4. New shocks (Bilstien)
  5. Front & rear Bumper
  6. Warn VR12000
  7. Blackout 120"x60"x6" roof rack
  8. Lights
  9. ORD Twin stick with FWD upgrade.
  10. CB (any Ideas of a good one)
Future upgrades will be Engine rebuild, OD trans, D60, Crossover, and Gears with front selectable locker.

Here what it looks like when I bought it.

That's a real nice looking burn! I like it and sounds like you got a good build in mind. I'm about to put an engine back in my 89 and I can't wait.

I'm not much of an oil expert but I ran a single redtop in my k10 for years with two stereo amps, a CB and extra lights and I loved it. My only regret is that I didn't remove the battery when I parked the truck for two years.

Heres the few things I know/ opinions I have,
As for oil.... the royal/amsoil stuff would be great but really not need for what your doing. Need more in 6500rpm race engines. Mobil 1, valvoline vr1, or rotella synthetic will do just fine and is MUCH cheaper.

  1. Oil/Filter (Royal/K&N or Amsoil)(wix filter)
  2. Trans fluid/Filter (Royal or Amsoil)
  3. Air Filter (K&N) They flow better but there are things to be read on the net about using them in dusty conditions. they WILL allow more particles through
  4. Check Brakes & Longer Lines (If OK will wait for D60 upgrade)
  5. Diff Oil (Royal or Amsoil)
  6. Flush Rad (Maybe New 4core)Cant find 4 cores anymore:dunno:apparently aluminums the way to go
  7. XL HD Trans Cooler (In front of Rad)
  8. Engine heater
  9. Grease everything
  10. Double Battery/Optima 1Red&1Yellow (Not sure what kit to use)all you need for this is a battery isolator, most parts places have them.
  11. New Alternator/Belt (High output for future Winch/Lights/Misc)
  12. Electric Fan (Maybe)
Once these are done I would like to do these things ASAP (month or less). This way I can start getting out on some runs with guys in the Colorado area and maybe a trip to Moab.

  1. ORD Zero rear use the 3" springs below and you wont need it. Yours looks a tad higher in the rear anyway so should be fine
  2. ORD shackel flip & 2-3" Springs Rear (tuff county)
  3. Bushwacker Cut-Out-Flares will look odd if you are staying with 35"s
  4. New shocks (Bilstien)
  5. Front & rear Bumper
  6. Warn VR12000
  7. Blackout 120"x60"x6" roof rack
  8. Lights
  9. ORD Twin stick with FWD upgrade.
  10. CB (any Ideas of a good one)
Future upgrades will be Engine rebuild, OD trans, D60, Crossover, and Gears with (front selectable locker.) best thing to do right here. even if it isnt selectable. I would even say get a lunchbox for your d44 for now till you can do the 60. Major improvement in capability

Oh, and NICE A$$ BURB MAN:thumb:
Just my .02:waytogo:

Thanks for the input. I have used rotella and wix in my farming days and like it so I will check that out. I will be moving to 37" with Trailworthyfab Rims and sell the the set on the burban now. As far as the front diff there is a guy from the forums selling one in my city. Its a brand new D60 its open and has 4:56 gears. the price is very good so I might have to just do that first. Gears are the only thing I cant do myself. I would have to regear my GM14. Any ideas on price to have it done. Or maybe some in Colo would want to trade a AR-15 for helping me do it.:D

I really like the look of them. Heres is a pic of what I want it to look like. This one is on 38's and I am going to use 37's so should be close. I am also getting the same rack made.

They sure look sharp, but had a set on my 88 pickup and they didn't last. First time I pulled my bow case out of the bed and bumped the flare it cracked. I have heard of some sending them in and getting a new set, but for what they ask for a set I would expect more durability. Maybe find something with similar looks that is rubber based or silicone or something, or fill the inside of the flare with some material to add to it's strength. Just a thought. Should caveat that it was during a cold day in north Dakota so I'm sure that played to them cracking as well.

that suburban looks too damn good, please dont ruin it with bushwacker flares...

otherwise, sounds like a great plan.

I am rethinking it so don't cry yet. LOL I really want to put on some 37" but don't want more than 6" of lift. I hate trimmed fenders without flares. Any ideas.

open up the fenders with the stock lip intact. Its a little more work but can be done. theres a few threads on here that have it it there. the IRON MAIDEN thread has it for sure.

get a full on square side shot of your burb and I'll try to do some photo shop stuff to see what it looks like.

If you like the look of the flares then run them there not to bad and you actually get some tire coverage. if you enlarge the fender opening ( a huge job that involves repainting parts of the truck) you will only gain tire clearance.

Ya I am not sure. I still love the look of the cut out flares and they help with coverage. I found them online for $325 for all four. maybe I should just buy a extra set. I will order one set and just wait to put them on for sure.

Shady thanks for the pics that will help me figure out what I want to do.

I talked to James at RLCweldfab yesterday and I am going to do my front and rear bumpers with a slide rail plus hoop steps first. Then I can mock up the flares to see if they look good or not.

I just found out I can Pro-Deal Cobra CB's from work any ideas on the best one for Offroad. I should get 50% off. they also make inverters thinking 1000watt would be good.

Ok I need some help. I want to put on a trans cooler and gauge. Any ideas on what to use. It must be heavy duty.

Cooler is easy biggest one you can get simple as that, gauge is whatever you like best

Well I just got back from emissions and failed HC at idle. Man I have no idea just says high unburnt fuel at idle. Any ides?

back when i was daily driving my suburban ('89 3/4t tbi350) i had to replace the O2 sensor every year. might start there.
