I picked up a 90 bone stock Jimmy auto in very nice condition. I plan on taking a lot of parts off my 86 Jimmy std. I will be taking off the 5 inch bds lift, 35/13.50r15 boggers. What would you guys take off the 86 that I may have missed. Any recommendations? I plan on making a bogger with good street manners as well.

Pics will be on the way this weekend.

Would I be better off taking the entire suspension off with the diffs still on and swap them that way or just take the suspension off and leave the diffs with the original vehicle?

Which tcase is better the one in the 90 or 86?

The 86 has welded rear diff is that better or should I put a locker or something in the 90.

As I stated earlier I'm planning on basically scrapping the 86 and just keeping the real hard to find parts from it is in really bad shape.

What gears are in which axles?

Martin

This. Don't forget that your 6.2 enjoys a different RPM range than a typical sbc. Spending the time to choose a good engine/tranny/axle combination is a really good idea in the long run. Are you starting with a 700R4 (O/D) or TH400 (3-speed) automatic?

(Martin-were they offering other tranny options in 1990 yet?)

Post up more details and the recommendations will flow. :D

Interesting!

I`m only a hour and a half north of Calgary!

If you got a place to keep to 86 Id save it all for parts.

The only transmission available in a K5 with the 6.2 was the TH700R4, unless it was a CUCV. The M1008's got the TH400. That being said, thousands of TH350's have been swapped in place of TH700R4's over the years.

I believe it has the 700r4

And as for axle ratios I don't know yet lol havnt had time to jack them up and test them. But the 86 was about 1800-2000 in 4th gear doing 100 Km/h 60 mph if memory serves me right

I'd love to keep the 86 for all the parts but planning a move/ job change in the next year retiring from the military.

1800RPM is a fine engine speed for a 6.2 engine (good compromise between mileage and power). I currently have one truck with higher cruising speed than this and one truck with lower cruising speed. Personally, I prefer the lower engine speed, but I also live in a fairly flat area (rarely see grades above 5%). When we took the 3.08:1 truck into 6% and 7% grades last year (in Ontario), I ended up downshifting the 700R4 at the start of every steep climb. I could imagine getting tired of that if I lived in such terrain...

First of all, welcome to CK5. :waytogo:

Secondly, thank you for your service! You're not terribly far from me, I'm in Edmonton.

To the questions...going by the numbers the closest ratio I can figure you have in the 86 are 4.56. Well worth keeping. If you're going to keep the suspension you might as well keep the spring packs attached to the diffs...and you definitely want to keep the diffs if they have 4.56's.

The 6.2 has a sweet spot for cruise rpm and 1800 at 65 mph is it. You would have the ideal gears for the 6.2 to run the 35" boggers.

Parts I would keep are thing like the tailgate guts if they work OK in the 86. All the lights, lenses etc plus the harness's for them. I'd also remove and keep the entire under dash wiring harness plus fuse block. Steering box, fuel tank skid plate, tow hooks, F/R bumpers, complete doors if they're OK. Driveshafts too. All that should store in a fairly compact area and be easy enough to move when the time comes.

Yes indeed! Thank you for serving! :thumb:
Also would keep the steering column and all the standard related parts...trans, adapter, tc! Pedals, clutch...even" trust me" the clutch fork arm is hard to find anymore! :doah: Even if you don't plan on using the parts I know guys that want them!

I got a 6.2 flywheel at my place if you wanted to convert to standard... But you would have to make a deal with Rene if you want it! :D

He is tRustyk5! My name is Dean.

heres some photos of both of them sorry for the quality

what you can't see because of the snow is the cowl hood on the 86 and full convertible top.

I'll add to my list of 'keep' then.

Windshield frame, topper, and second vote for doors. That stuff is getting harder and harder to find...

Well I just talked to the previous owner of the 86 and he said that it has 3.08s. Could I change the gear if it has a welded rear end?

Why not put the good stuff on one rig, and sell the other rig complete?
