91 Burban build thread

Its my privilege to serve.

So anyways...got a box today from Off Road Design. Yippeeee!!!!. I ordered their crossover steering kit so I got everything except the pitman arm and the draglink. I'm using a different pitman arm because I want more drop to clear my turbo header. So, since I'm using the different pitman arm, ORD wants me to install the steering arm and the pitman arm then measure so they can make the right size drag link. I also got a rebuild kit for the D60 kingpins and some U-bolts for the D60.

Here's a sampling of the goods

You guys tell me what you think. I was thinking of painting some of the parts (cross over parts, steering box, diff covers, ect) metalic blue to match the burban. I think it looks pretty sharp on most rigs but I don't want to look too blingy if you know what I mean.

I think a contrasting color would look good.

Another question:

Did your truck have the turbo on it when you got it or did you install it? I am asking to see if it would be worth the nearly 2K for the Banks or just blow the money and find a big CID gasser.

There are cheaper options for a turbo than banks... just not as simple.

Mine was a dealer options. There are other turbo systems but it depends on if you want the w support that banks will offer. I didn't even buy it through them and they are always so helpful to me when I have a question.

What do you mean by contrast in color? different color all together or were you agreeing with my original idea? The only problem with with using a third color is inevitably, someone will ask if I'm a fan of whatever sports team happens to use those colors. What if its some sorry ass sports team that nobody likes and I look like a beg dweeb to all the sports fans. I would never know.

I forgot what paint scheme you had(and could not see the first pic on the work computer), but now that I can see it, I think the blue would look good. My crewcab was red/white/red and I painted the dif covers red to match and I think it came out nice.

Still plugging away. I cleaned up and painted the front axle today. I didn't get into the knuckles because I'm sure I'll have to pull them apart to replace the rotors and I'll just paint them then. The other good new is that the ring and pinion are perfect looking. Its been sitting in the motor pool for who knows how long and the fluid in the front diff looked brand new. I want to start tackling the install but I'm still waiting on some parts and I don't want to redneckify the driveway until I have everything I need to finish. Here are some pics of the D60 You'll see that the passenger side cap is off because I'm waiting on the paint I ordered to color coordinate the cross over steering arm. I put the stock passenger cap on the driver's side.

Yeah paint them up. Most of my stuff ends up flat black over time, but I like the contrasting colors when I build it. I used dark blue on my knuckles/diff cover and a cast coat aluminum for my axle yokes and x-over arm. It looks good IMO.

Side note don't paint the bottom of the arm (mating surface) for best results.

Here is how mine looked. Theres a ton of pics in my build thread.

Dude!! bummer about your little one, poor little guy, hope he heals up real quick. Great build and a HUGE THANK YOU! for your service.

I do wheel it. We just moved here from Texas so I haven't been wheel'n up here yet but I plan on a going just as soon as this axle swap is done. I'd love to start meeting some of the gang around here. I heard about a trip in a few weeks but I don't think I'll be done by then.

what creek are you crossing in your avatar? Not cowhouse is it?
I think it was Cowhouse over by Barrow. If not it was one of the creeks that feed Cowhouse.

How's it going over there? Let me guess. FOB hopping for all the soldiers that need to hit the Liberty PX, wearing more protective gear to ride a bicycle that to fly, and Finance is still closed on weekends.

im going to harlan,ky in a few weeks...pm sent

Had a special specialist the other day. He had two Hawks show up just to bring him back from getting a passport.

The MPs were having a blast ticketing everyone for riding bikes without reflective belts during daylight or wearing them wrong. That was until our Col took the tickets to the PMO and said knock that **** off.

Going to have to explore a little more when I get back to find some more local wheeling spots.

Well, here's what it looks like with a D60 and worn out CUCV tires. My wheels get in tomorrow so I can mount the tires and get them on the front. I'm also waiting on the drop pitman arm and my hydro assist kit from WTO.

What do you guys think about the darker blue color on the diff cover and the shackle? The steering arm is also that color but you can't really see it. I decided to use a darker blue cause I think a light blue accent could look a little queer if you know what I mean.

Looks good. You work to fast for me though...........

Hope your son is feeling better but tell him he's not alone. My son broke his arm about a month ago.

Progress at last. I was running out of stuff to tinker with while I waited for parts. I finally got everything in from ORD for the D60 cross over steering kit and the steering box brace. Also, I got the Stage 2 kit in from West Texas Offroad. I'm just not the type to take pictures as I work so there aren't any of those. Everything bolted up pretty nicely. I also replaced the springs and bushings in the kingpins. I kept my master cylinder and there seems to be a lot of petal travel but it stops really well. (I drove it down the road a little with the old axle in the rear and the new front axle).

I was worried that the drage link was going to contact my crossover exhaust pipe but no problem there. It does just barely touch at one point in the arc but I think a bottle jack while it pipe is really hot will help relocate it a couple millimeters.

I didn't hook up the ram yet. I'm waiting on a welder that my father-in-law is sending me. When I mocked it up though, the weld-on mounting tabs seem a little too big for the stock tie rod. So...I may be upgrading to a Rock Rod. And while I'm doing that, I may as well to high-steer. If it ain't one thing, its another.

Also, you can see the HMMWV radials mounted on the wagon wheels look pretty bitch'n too. I think they will make a great "all terrain" tire.

Well, here are the pics.

In other news. I'm taking my son to get his cast off tomorrow.

Good to hear. He will be sore around the joints for a couple days but running around like before in no time.

The rig is looking great.

I like the blue, mostly because the rig is blue. I was thinking of doing all my stuff the same green as my 'burb.
